Core Lore: The Story Behind the Warlock

While most citizens of Azeroth begin their adventures in Northshire, Corescorpius was born and raised there. But he wasn't always known as CoreScorpius. And he wasn't always the bitter, death seeking megalomaniac he is today. In fact, he was a young mage called Antares. Back then, the Northshire Vineyard was owned and operated by Antares's parents, Shaula and Grafias. Who came from a long line of mages that used their powers to produce one of the finest wines for the kingdom of Stormwind.

Meanwhile, the Defias Gang grew bigger and stronger and have been terrorizing Antares's parents for "protection gold". Shaula and Grafias would never concede to this notion and a plot for the assasination of the whole family was brewed. Stealthy Defias rouges stealed in during the night and placed deadly scorpions from far away Kalimdor and left the family for dead. Including Antares. But the Defias, being little more than common thugs, failed to research their victims habits and where unaware of the wine shipment that was due the next day. At dawn, representatives for the Royal Family arrived for their shipment and found Shaula, Grafias and Antares, lifeless in their beds. Or so it seemed...

Recognizing the value of the vineyard, and with no obvious beneficiary, Stormwind officials confiscated the vineyard and leased it to the current residents. A clause was later agreed upon that if a rightful descendant where to claim the vineyard, it would then be returned.

Because it was a family of mages, a mage from Stormwind called Jennea Cannon traveled to Northshire to recover the bodies of her fellow conjurors and incase them in an icy tomb, as is the custom of mages. To her horror, she discovered that Antares was still alive. Barely, but still alive. Forgetting what she was there to do in the first place, Jennea rushed Antares back to her order's tower in the Wizard's Sanctum. Mages were amazed to see that someone could survive such a dreadful fate. Mages, priests, and paladins from around the world came to heal Antares from his toxic slumber. All would fail. Eventually, a rogue named Sloan McCoy heard of Antares story. Being a poison expert herself, she decided to pay the benumbed young mage a visit. Slaon was relentlessly trying to cure Antares of his ailment. After using her entire knowledge of poisons, she succeeded in moving all of the venom into one area of Antares body; his heart.

Antares awakens.

Antares is told of the death of is family. In his anger, he comdemed everyone for failing to save Shaula and Grafias and leaves the order, forever. After Antares leaves, Jennea grieves for him and accepts the fact that Antares never really survived his ordeal and that in fact, Antares soul was dead.

Antares tries to reclaim his vineyard but Stormwind refuses to believe that anyone could survive the deadly Venom. The profits gained from the lease did not help his cause as well. All pleas were dismissed and Antares was thrown out of the Storwind Keep. Although Antares was young, his body resembled that of a much older man. And he was indeed a broken man. Everything he once possessed was now lost. Even his skills in the arcane arts were gone. A side effect of Sloan's "cure". Ironically, he was reduce to working for scraps at the Northshire Vineyard. With no real purpose in life, Antares spent what little copper and time he had in grog. Every time he drank he would retell the story of his former glory only to be laughed at by people who would never be a fraction of the man he once used to be. He resented them all. This resentment gained him a reputation that preceded him where ever he went. Soon he would be banned from The Pig and Whistle Tavern where he spent most of his time. The gilded Rose would not allow him entry either. There was only one place he could go that would tolerate his belligerence. The slaughtered Lamb. One night after retelling his story, a lady called Ursula Deline approached him and showed interest in his strange story. She was impressed with Antares resilience against the Scorpion's Venom.

Antares eventually grew tired of what seemed to be Ursula's mocking attitude and was about to dismiss her when she made him an offer. A chance for revenge. To kill the ones responsible for destroying his past. Ursula would grant him the power to deal dark magic and control of demonic fiends in exchage for his soul. In his greed to once again cast magic and avenge his parents death, he gleefully accepted Ursula's offer. Ursula took Antares beneath the Slaugthered Lamb. Down through dark corridors ever so deep until they reached the lowest level. Here in this level was a woman holding a demonic skull. Her name was Acolyte Porena. Porena was standing over a summoning circle that had strange glowing purple symbols. Antares was told to stand in the circle for his "rebirth". When Antares stood in the circle, he felt the first true emotion since he lived in Northshire. Fear. Antares was bathed in the blood of seven slaughtered lambs. Although the lambs were freshly killed, the blood felt chillingly cold. Soon antares would slip out of conciseness. Before the world around him completely faded, Paroma places Antares's left hand on the skull she was holding and lifted his head and said, to his mind without moving her lips, "From this day forth you will walk the world in constant search for souls. For you shall need them to fill the ever growing void within you. And you shall be named, CoreScorpius. The heart of the Scorpoin." Darkness was welcomed and Antares Finally dies.

When CoreScorpius awoke, he found himself in front of the Northshire Abby. Across the river he can just see the vineyard.

His heart blackens...
