I wasn't able to take on more than 3 mobs at a time until I hit 70 and even then, I would wind up very low on health and mana.

The key, I think, is having the right amount of spell damage (I'm not where I want to be but it's better than it was) to make sure that the mobs are going to drop after your dots tick down.

Later on the trick will be figuring out the minimum number of dots you'll need so you don't waste mana.
