any mobs that is green to you ( ie will give XP ) will help your pet level. but the amount of XP is less then what you personally would get ( eg if green mob X gives you 500 XP your pet might only recieve 250... 50% reduction).
it's one of the few hunter complaints in existance atm... prob 2nd / 3rd to the class sucking in arenas / mana problems...
I honestly power lvled my 62 ravager to 70 via instances... the trick is to just not use your pet lol...
