Ok, first off... I personally don't like RP servers... not big on that, but that's just my opinion.

Well, it's hard not to judge things on endgame because that is where you will spend of most of your time playing. To answer your question about "when" to level up your proffession, there's really not a good or bad time to do it. I personally only do it on my alts when they are in a city, which only happens when I go train new spells. The cool thing about tailoring is that you don't need anything special like an anvil to work until much later on, so you can technically just do it whenever your bags get full or something to get rid of some cloth.

As far as your suggestion for powerleveling tailoring goes, that's not a bad idea. Only problem there is that you would need to save ALL the cloth that you gather to really keep any money that you make extra. Also, you won't really make any reasonable amounts of money with gathering (by reasonable i mean enough to be actually rich) until outlands, and that's if you never buy anything off the auction house. Also, this would mean you'd have to drop a proffession that you have already worked on, which I have problems doing (feels like I just wasted a bunch of time).

I actually did herb/tailor with my lock (first toon on my current server), and it was pretty enjoyable. Plus, I never had any money trouble until I started saving up for my epic flyer (this was back when the only dailies that existed were the skettis and BEM ones, and I hadn't done the ogrilla quest ones). Even then, it wasn't too bad.

Recently I decided to make a new lock on the same server, both horde. I figured I'd make him a higher dps lock, so i made him an orc with tailoring/enchanting. Enchanting sucks to level upwhen you have no mains to mooch from, but if you do it becomes far easier.
