Re: New to WoW, New to the Forums, simple question.
Tailoring can help a lock out as you level. There is a lock quest that requires tailoring to make the robes of arcana (I think) that end up being golden robes or something. There is also the shadoweave set that you can get from mid 30's to mid 40's that is great for our shadow damage, and from looking at Cpimps guide there is at least one more good set for locks pre end game, but from what I have not been able to make any of those with the level of tailoring I had at the time I needed those sets so I had to find a higher level lock to make them with mats I had farmed.
The problem I have ran into with leveling tailoring while I level my lock is that I started a little later than I should have. It's not that bad to level as you go, using cloth drops from mobs, but you have to keep your tailoring up with where you are leveling. I've found myself taking on mobs that drop wool when I need linen, silk when I need wool, mageweave when I need silk and so on.
This wouldn't have been that big of a problem but I was leveling first aid and turning in cloth for rep/exp (it's my first char, gimme a break) so I didn't have a ton of cloth in the bank when my tailoring was up to the level where I needed it. Now I'm trying to play catchup, but the price on wool and silk is outrageous on my server.
On the upswing if you run tailoring and enchanting at the same time you can DE most everyting you make then sell the de mats on the AH. Kind of takes place of your gathering professions. I ran from 0 to 70 or so just from disenchanting greens, kept me in coin, and helped to pay for my wifes first mount as well. But don't forget to keep some of those mats to enchant gear later on after you stop getting levels from disenchanting.
If I had it to do again I would likely take a gathering prof and (dis)enchanting and then power level up tailoring when I got to the point in the game where it would be most helpful (level 80 by the time you and I get to end-game). That way you can make some gold from your gathering, and bank mats/make gold from disenchanthing greens/blues you pick up on the way. There are plenty of good guides that lay out the cheapest/easiest/fastest way to level any of the crafting profs to help you powerlevel when you're ready.
Ok, that was long and a little everywhere, but remember, it's the journey, not the dest.
