Re: Haunt/SL or Chaos Bolt/SL
After posting the reply above with the 54/17/0 build, I decided to try it out for a while. I was really surprised with my survivability in Arena (played ~40 games with Ret Pally and Disc Priest in 3s, and ~10 games with Ret Pally in 2s). I rarely died first, except to extreme burst teams. I was also consistently keeping up with my half PvE-geared Pally partner for damage despite acting as CC-bot. Our overall ratio was still horrible due to lack of coordination, but I'm pretty satisfied with the spec, and might even switch over to using it in 2s and Destro in 3s. I also went into Strand to reevaluate the spec for BG play and was really pleased with the results. I'll post a screenshot later.
My basic Arena setup/strat was to start with a Voidwalker and put up as much dispel fodder as possible to protect PW:F. After checking the other team's comp and dropping my circle, I would sacrifice the Void and hard summon Succubus or Felhunter depending on the comp (although always using Felhunter works just as well), or Fel Dom summon if we were getting rushed. The Voidwalker shield REALLY helps against rush strats and stealth comps. An alternative strategy is to play extremely defensively and channel Consume Shadows for the stealth detection. The only downside to this was that I was flying down from Dalaran to farm shards in between matches.
Obviously, Dispel and Spellsteal are very powerful against the Voidwalker strat, and Dispel is extremely powerful against Affliction in general. Extreme (PvE gear) burst will still kill you through the Void shield. I died most to Hunter/Mage comps freezing me in place and nuking with or without Spellsteal/Dispel, and Arc Mage/Rogue comps, obviously. I'd still recommend Destro, or Meta if you must, but if you play it right and don't die in 3 GCDs, Haunt/SL can definitely perform.
