Personally, I didn't waste my time/money on the crappy crafted gear; If you do BGs for a couple hours 2 nights in a row, then you've more than likely earned enough honor for 1 piece of gear. Easiest way other than running VoA, imo, is to do the daily BG every day, and run a few of each BG to be able to turn in your marks for Concerted Efforts. Of course, I'm totally anal about it, so I need to have the same amount of marks for each BG - at least my insanity helps me grind honor! Also, try and do WG whenever it's up when you're online (make sure you do the quests - tons of honor) - it's not as demanding as it sounds since it's a 2 hour-ish timer. Just my 2cents, of course ;)
It's not a big deal if you are just getting started in PVP. If I remember correctly I had 4 pieces of Frostsavage before I even hit level 80. Having the crafted set is far better than nothing if you are planning to PVP, and it is nearly as good as the first set of level 80 PVP gear as well. At about 70g a piece a person could easily gear up and make the PVP experience much more fun while aquiring better gear. However, that being said, if you are fully [epic] PVE geared, then it can be fun to go into PVP and just melt faces - if you are good at avoidence, (and don't mind getting gibbed by melee otherwise.)
