WotLK: Utgarde Keep

Posted November 14, 2008 at 12:37 PM by AballahSon
Through together a couple of our raiders to go instancing last night to check out the new instances. I really liked the detail and graphic design I was overall quite impressed. Now about the run:

Notes:

Mobs - Most of these mobs can be CC'd makes for a fairly simple instance to clear for XP. There is one type of mob (looking for the name now can't find it) that casts a bubble on other NPC's or themselves - these guys need to be CC'd or they can cause a lot of problems as they can also pour out a good bit of damage. Other than that the trash pulls are just business as usual.

Bosses:

Prince Keleseth - In my opinion this guy was the toughest boss in here. He does a couple of things: Ice Block, and Shadow Bolt are his primaries and he will summon five non elites to come fight by his side every minute or so.

Essentially we just grouped around the tank to be sure that the adds where grouped up close - they don't do a ton of damage just have a Lock SOC them down two or three seeds should do it.

Before going tell your people to bring there Medallion of the Alliance as this can come in quite handy when he freeze traps(Looks like Ice Block) you or another team member. It appears that pali's can bubble out S.PRiests can disperse - EVery Man for Himself works as well. Haven't had time to test other things for other toons. Also if you have felhound out I believe you can use devour magic - I did this on myself and Im not sure if it worked or if the spell just wore off?

Skarvald the Constructor -

WoWWiki says to burn these guys down at roughly the same time because as you kill one it pops up in Spirit Form until the other one dies. We actually just killed the mage first and than the melee. Have some kind of shadow protection and you should be able to survive the fight.

TIP: Stay in close to the tank to avoid the charge stun from the melee NPC. Once we moved in and fought beside the tank this became an easy fight. SPank and tank on each until they are dead.

Ingvar The Plunderer -

Generic Tank and Spank for the most part even though you do have to Kill Him Twice. He will go down the first time and than be resurrected as a scource player. Just pick him up and kill him again.

TIP: Tank him in the middle of the platform. Once he goes down the first time have all DPS stand behind a pillar to avoid his AoE Shadow damage. Tank and heals should be able to stay up out in the middle to ensure that the tank grabs first aggro. There was really nothing that challenging about this fight.

I should be getting into the other beg. Five Man Instance this evening. I will let you know how it goes.

I and a group of my core members ran this Saturday night. We managed a full clear within about an hour. We only wiped once, and this was against the last boss. We all thought it was a lot of fun.

Trash: The bubble-casting mobs were the Runecasters, and yes they are a serious pain. They were always our primary kill target in any group, followed by any Spiritualist present. The most difficult trash pull we dealt with was the 4-mob pull right before the first boss.

Prince Keleseth: Went down easy. With a raid warning coming right before the ice tomb, it wasn't hard to deal with that little wrinkle. Our BM hunter was assigned the task or breaking tombs on anyone who got caught, and he would pop Beast Within whenever he was the announced target. Our priest was targeted once and hit Fade, and this somehow allowed him to avoid the iceblock as well. Our mage was able to Blink out of the tomb, and the pally tank had his bubble. The only person to actually be entombed was me, and it wasn't much of a problem. To deal with the adds, grouping around the tank made life easy (gotta love Pally tanks).

Constructor and Planner: This was a slightly tighter fight, and we went for the tactic of bringing them down close together, burning the Planner down to about 10% before shifting to the Constructor. Standing near the tank for the fight probably would have helped, but we still brought them both down without too much fuss.

Ingvar: We wiped on the first run against this boss. We got him to phase 2, then the tank got dropped by an unlucky crit mid-heal. One Soul Stone later and we're back at it, and this time he goes down like a chump.

Overall, we really enjoyed this dungeon. The graphics and detail are stunning, especially in the giant forge room at the beginning. I'm also a big fan of the new smaller loot tables for bosses. I lost out on Keleseth's dagger to our mage, but with only 3 items on his loot table it shouldn't be a big deal to farm him for that blade. I swear that mage rolls with loaded dice though...

We may try for the Nexus tonight. If so, I'll try to put up a post of my own about how it goes.

A note on the Rune Casters:

If you have a S. Priest they can be mind controlled and that bubble is a nice little utility.

I will be posting about the nexus later ran it a couple of times this weekend. Truthfully with a good tank this is a fairly straight forward run as well.
