    It hurts so good

It would seem through research that just about any distro will work for WoW via Wine. It's just a matter of how many hoops you're willing to jump through to get there.

My problem with Fedora is the graphics driver. Theirs is just not robust enough to handle WoW, and they made it very difficult (for me) to install the one directly from NVidia.

With Gentoo, I just got tired of recompiling the kernel every time I forgot to change something (or it changed 'Fix A' back while I was applying 'Fix B').

I did not give Kubuntu a fair enough turn. Several others fell off the chopping block early on before I discovered the way around ACPI.

Next up, ArchLinux. Wish me luck!

Interesting, i tinkered with Linux some years ago and never got the nerve to start using it to play wow tho. Back then it was Red Hat ... but as some point i couldn't get network going so i left it.

Fedora 12 is the way to go i read... or do you have suggestions on a distribution that works flawless with wine/wow.

That is one of the reasons I'm migrating to Linux. My copy of Windows XP is not upgradable, and at some point in the near future, I feel that XP will be left behind for Windows 7 development. As such, I need to start shifting to another platform soon to future-proof my computing needs as much as possible.

Currently my fight with Fedora 12 (32bit) is in the NVidia driver. Their driver is not compatible with the built-in one from Fedora, and the 'EasyLife' software is supposed to make that change (among others) much easier. It only succeeded in reducing my effective desktop area to a 50x300 px area in the upper left, and the taskbar at the bottom.

So back to the grind, looking for the best distro for me. Maybe I can get KUbuntu running tomorrow...

Eh, No need to buy Windows. :-P You COULD get it for free if ya wanted to. That's the only reason I'm not 100% Linux. Why not use Windows if it's free? :-D

I dunno if it's against forum rules to discuss bootleg software. If so, don't kill me!

I also played WoW in BC on [Gentoo] Linux. But Wrath broke it due to upgrades from Blizzard. Now I am trying to migrate back to Linux and thus far I can only glimpse the login screen. The launcher is poop right now, as it removes permissions on the WoW directory immediately after launch.

Right now I am trying to get the NVidia drivers installed, but Fedora's open source driver is blocking me and I can't manage to get 'rmmod' to ditch it for me.

I think I've finally "beaten" WoW

I wrote my original post in kinda a totally grumpy gnomie mood, hence the erasing no worries ;)

    Good luck with the raid

I never had problems getting wow to run under wine on Fedora. I played it with stock kernel, stock wine rpms, and nvidia's video drivers and it always ran great. I've not used it since wrath came out (playing on a mac now, linux box needs upgraded hardware and is used more for work). However, I raided through SWP in BC on it and it worked fine. If my linux box had better hardware than my mac I'd probably still be playing on it.

    oh mate, good luck.

I used to run gentoo on my desktop, but at some point I didn't have the time anymore to recompile my whole system every other week for updates, and then spending hours on tracking all those compile errors :D
I always booted windows for gaming though... not worth the pain going through wine just to have bad performance then.

Got a mac now, it's a nice compromise between both worlds. But I do miss the absolute power of being root user on a linux system ;)

Appreciate the feedback guys. Gnomie, I love your blog posts because my guild is relatively new, too.

We just had a very large core of people from our previous guild that had a few hardmodes in Ulduar done leave with us, enabling us to continue forward.

I have talked to a couple of other recruiting guilds on Khadgar and a few of them showed a lot of interest and are at least up to the point we were at.

I'm going to see if I can lead these guys tonight and, at the very least, see some indication of productivity here. If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to headbutting sheetrock. As it's nearly as productive as our raids were last week.

Well your comment wasn't bad Gnomie, just a different situation than I think Tragik was in based on reading his post. In his case, I am reading into it that he recruited progression raiders for a progression team.

That means that everyone who apped didn't just say they wanted to raid, they have experience with progression raiding which usually entails a huge time, repair cost, and consumable cost commitment of many hours and nights.

For example, when Ulduar came out, I spent nearly 5 nights a week raiding normal mode 25 to clear to Yogg in the very early days and I am sure many guilds did. Eventually it did become a 1 night normal mode clear (or less), but then hard modes. OK, well all the hard modes then took up the rest of teh nights. And then ToC comes out and then ToC Hard modes, so we do TOC HMs, Ulduar HMs etc and it's a full week of raiding again.

At some point everyone even whole teams can need a break which is all I am saying.

I think I've finally "beaten" WoW

i would say take the opportunity and give yourself, and the guild which you co-lead, a break from wow, or at least from raiding. shit happens and guild morale goes down below. remember everyone of us is a person with their own personal issues, thinking, etc.
myself, i took that time off, and still on that since last August, but i intend to reactivate my account one of these days, got a couple gamecards yesterday :p

before i stopped playing, i was on the search for guild for 6 months, saw a couple real nice raiding guilds i was a member disbanding, 1 quit raiding, and my own guild abandoned by me. everything for stupid reasons from my pov.

people get bored, progression cant happen without a solid 25man team, recruits are not ready to step in right away, people still bored, and everything helps build a destruction chain little by little. on the end of the month, or when the subscription ends, u find yourself "i've had enough!"

and so, i say, dont let people make u hate wow. on such stressful situations u should act selfishly for your own good

    damn thats awkward

    Gnome,

At his level of raiding, you can't use a penalty like pug'ing the hard mode spots out because pug's won't tolerate a night of wiping on progression nor will they be as committed as a main raid team.

You can come up with penalties but if the team does WANT it, you really can't MAKE them with penalties. Penalties are there to help guide people to raid the right way for the guild, but you can't MAKE people raid like a job.

    --

    Tragik,

Your story is not a new one. I see many applications to a progression guild like ours that has that background -- 1 or a group of players is frustrated because of the rest of the guild is OK with clearing easy mode and not interested in the hard work it takes to down the hard modes.

As I've said to Gnome, above, I don't think you can change people's personalities. They either are motivated or not. If they aren't personally motivated, then you should probably find a guild of people that are.

The other question is whether the people on your team are only interested in easy mode FOR THE MOMENT. Ulduar and Ulduar hard mode progression to get the drakes took a lot of work from a lot of guilds. Perhaps it's time for a break of a few weeks or a month for your guild so that when ICC is out, they will be energized again. The loot in hard mode TOTC25 is amazing, but being decked out in TOC25 loot isn't going to be a huge handicap to being competitive in ICC.

Anyway, only you can really tell if this is a temporary lull in your raiding or more a pattern of behavior that may require that you seek greener pastures.

    Bring the pain

I have yet to see a Microsoft OS drop in price after any amount of time. XP was still $90 or whatever when they pulled it from the shelves. One of the purposes for my migration off of XP is the onward march of time and technology, and the fact that I cannot get security updates. Also, finding drivers for new hardware is getting increasingly difficult.

Since I can identify with the principles and practices in most Linux distributions, and it runs on my hardware, I have chosen to go that route. It is just a matter of correcting some underlying issues with my current -- somewhat dated -- installation, or taking the plunge tomorrow and fragging my hard drive and starting from scratch. Tomorrow these decisions will have to be made, and the consequences dealt with.

Now to pray for success -- or Occulus as the Heroic Daily!

Go back to xp then, I still use it and it works great. Windos 7 will probably fall in price after some time.

I'm not willing to pay $200 for the standard list of Windows bugs and all the virus headaches, etc. I understand that Windows 7 is far superior to Vista, and it is even better than XP. But Linux is free, open, and relatively secure right out of the box.
Now if I could just get WoW to run...

I do miss not being required to pick up a talent for PVP, even casual BG's, as things are with soul link right now.
