Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

I am relatively new lock at level 40. I am in a guiild with some RL buddies. The guild already has a 340 level tailor and did not have a BS, so I said I would do Mining/BS. This guild is very supportive and I am sure they will help me get gear in from 5 man raids and instances--we are a relatively small guild at about 20 people or so.

I know that tailoring has stuff that is BoP which means as a bs, I will never get this crafted gear. Given the gear from raids and such, how much will I be missing by not being a tailor?

It isnt too late to go for tailoring and move BS to my alt mage (I would keep mining for alt and profit).

Also, what kind of gear can I get from raids given the size of my guild (i.e., not being able to field a 25 person group for a raid)? I have my eyes set on the corruptor raiment. Is this a possibility?

Re: Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

If you want to do some serious raiding in the expansion, you'll need to get 25 people together, because Karazhan is the only 10 man.

Lots of good items in Heroic mode 5 mans though.

I thought about taking Tailoring for my lock, but went Herbalism/Alchemy and I love it. There's only a handful of items/sets that only Tailors can use, and if you plan on raiding you can probably find better or at least equal gear. I say if your guild needs a Blacksmith, then you might as well fill that role.

Bags for very cheap are always a good thing.

You'll be missing out on the 3 piece frozen shadoweave set which (unless you are in a serious raiding guild or kickass arena pvp team) is arguably some of the best early epic gear you can get your hands on. Oodles of +shadow damage, 2 sockets on every piece and totally soloable. This armor is BoP which means noone else can make it for you.
goto thottbot and search for frozen shadoweave or just click tailoring and scroll down to about 360 skill where the first piece is...make sure you're wearing your drool catcher.

I will say though that early level tailoring sucks for gearing yourself and the robe of the void is completely not worth making anymore. You could wait until you're into the expansion and decide to take tailoring and powerlevel it up then.

Re: Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback. It appears that unless I can get into 25 person raids, I will not be able to go after the Corruptor Raiment set.

I dont mind being the guild BS. I'm actually happy to help out (like I said, they have been extremely supportive). I just wanted to be informed before I start leveling BS too much. Like I mentioned, I could move BS off to my alt and take up tailoring before I invested too much time and resources in BS on my main.

My mining is pretty decent at 175, but I hadnt really started leveling BS much yet (only about 50-60).

Enough rambling. Thanks again

Re: Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

I'd pick up tailoring RIGHT now. You're right at the levels where it would start to get somewhat expensive if you bought all the mats on the AH. I'd pick it up, quickly try to level it up to the silk/mageweave stage and then you'll be on par with everyone else. Since it sounds like you aren't in some hardcore raiding guild, the specialized sets seems like those might be the best epic items you'll be able to get your hands on for a while. I'd pick up tailoring right now; it basically levels by itself.

Here's a good guide:

Re: Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

It will only use recipe's available at a trainer until 275 and vendor available recipe's from 275 to 300.
It only uses recipes that require cloth and vendor bought material (thread, dye). The only exceptions are the vendor bought recipe's to get to 300 which require rugged leather. The leather needed is easely aquired through skinning or the auction house.
It does not tell you how to get all the different recipe's from quests, vendors or drops. What you do once you hit 300 is entirely up to you.
This guide is primarily aimed at those who want to switch profession at high level or have high level alts, friends or guildmembers.

Re: Not doing Tailoring - What will I be missing?

Correction: The power leveling guide is wrong about the last recipes, they are ALL taught by the trainer now.

Number are mostly accurate, still got leftovers and had to buy stuff.

300-360 is fairly simple if you get enough netherweave, as the green netherweave set gives points up to 360 (or even more in green skill-ups). Only a little leather is used every now and then.

360-375 is not complicated but just very expensive. Ever wondered about these cheap Imbued Netherweave Tunics/Robes at AH? It's leveling stuff...

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback and I have decided to take up Tailoring, just not at the moment. I am, however, banking all my cloth now.
