For a Warlock, FA is best used to replace mana. Life-time 3 times and bandage. Real simple and effective.

At least from my perspective as an affliction warlock, I'd rather simply cast drain life if I suddenly find myself down low on health during a fight in a raid. I don't recall the exact numbers off the top of my head, but I believe drain life will heal me for approximately 400 health a tick, changing slightly based on bonus damage and modifiers such as curse of shadow, and do identical damage the boss, with a tick ever five seconds for five seconds. Thus, I have 400 healing/second and equivalent damage to a boss. At the same time, siphon life is ticking away, helping to raise that healing just a little bit. (I haven't modified the number 400 with anything, it's just a rough approximation from what I remember usually being what I drain.)

With first aid, a heavy netherweave bandage will heal for 3,400 HP over 8 seconds. With Fel Armor, that becomes 3,400*1.2 = 4080, which when divided by eight seconds is 510 healing per second for eight seconds.

I guess what I'm asking is, shouldn't the ability to partially mitigate your DPS lost make up for the somewhat lesser healing? Is it just not that big a deal to lose the eight seconds? Or am I missing something big, perhaps the mana cost of drain life? Is my math far worse than even I imagined?

There are of course exceptions, where the mob is immune to drain life, but the only one I can honestly think of off the top of my head is Void Reaver, and as long as I'm more or less on my toes and only get it once or twice by an orb I'm usually alright living off of healthstones and healing potions. On the other hand, Void Reaver as about as far along in progression as I've ever been, maybe such fights are more common than I realized.
dammit you stole my post. i completley agree. before VR i didnt even have FA. drain life imo is better in any raiding situation that the mob isnt immune.

Re: How important is First Aid to you?

The issue here is not what is better, but is FA useful?

Example: You just finished fighting and heath and mana is real low, for whatever reason. Mobs are all around you and last thing you want to do is engage a mob to Drain Life.

It is better to FA than to use potions in my opinion. It is a skill that everyone should have and use when they need it. Best thing, it's the cheapest of all skills to learn.

It's like saying "I don't need to learn to drive stick because I will never drive a car that is stick." maybe so, but you never know.

Better yet, I don't need to learn CPR .... get the picture?

I think I can see what you are saying, Carnos. It's something that's good to have for the rare case you need it (like Void Reaver,) especially since it's rather inexpensive to level?

In your particular example, with mobs all around you, I think I'd just enjoy myself a delicious Bladespire Bagel and some nice, cool water, but you make a fair point, assuming I understand it correctly.

What can I say, I like bagels.

A better question is why not cap FA its a great skill especially if you find yourself OOM and you don't have much health to spare. Fear tap bandage.

Re: How important is First Aid to you?

IMO first aid is a necessity for any raider. But in boss fights where you can either tap and drain life or deathcoil bandaging is useless. At least when you drain life you are still doing damage to the boss, whereas if you bandage your dps stops. The only time I've ever used bandages in a boss fight is when I'm silenced and need a few extra hp . ie gruul's silence

Re: How important is First Aid to you?

FA is important for me on my Warlock, but I use it even more on my priest, both when I was Holy and now as Shadowpriest, I rather have the mana regenerating and bandage than throw a heal on myself after a fight.

And when I was a heal guy, it really pissed me off seeing a warlock lifetap after a fight when I was drinking and then they just sat there without bandaging or eating waiting for the heal to come....
During a fight was another thing, lifetap and you get a renew to add to siphon life and set bonuses.

Re: How important is First Aid to you?

Eksitaja, altough I feel your pain. I have been ordered multiple times to life tap and not eat or bandage by our healers during the raids.
They wanted to speed up the process.
They saw it as their task to heal.
And I admit there was a lot less waiting time between the fights with lifetap.

Anyway it is the easiest prof to level. So it is not a burden to level it.

It has saved my life once in arena. Out of life and mana, bandage, dot, drain ftw.
