Question about taking up Enchanting...
I wasn't really sure of a better place to ask than here. So here goes.
I'm a level 30 Warlock. Up to now, my professions have been Mining (solely for selling stuff on the AH for cash) and Tailoring, for obvious reasons. However, I wanted to take up Enchanting. I've heard it's expensive... but I've managed to save up 65 gold, and was wondering if I'd be able to make Enchanting a source of income for myself, as well as fitting in better with the theme of my character. If you think it would be better to put it off longer, an idea of when it would be safe to switch would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice!Last edited by Leuthil; May 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM. |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
lol i had around 100g from mining/tailoring by the time i was 30
. Guess i was just really lucky. With only 30g i think you should wait a tiny bit longer. I'm switching once i get to level 60 at least. Well that's just my opinion.![]() |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Well, I have 60+, not 30. As for the amount... a lot of it depends on the server. Going prices vary quite a lot depending on server.
So... any other opinions? |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Enchanting mats,to skillup, are an absolute pain at lower level i had skinning (cash mostly preTBC) & tailor till i was 70-but i'm a bit slow lol.
when i went enchanter i ran low level instances over & over for mats that i could use to skillup so that made it much easier. I have an alt on a PVE server & at 40 shes still herb/skinner-gold is easier & skinning means faster repops on mobs. |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
You will make more money (while leveling and at 70) with mining.
Adamantite Ore - 20~30g per stack. Large Prismatic Shard - ~20~35g per shard. Even turning your excess cloth into blues for DE, you'll still be able to gather more ore than you will shards. Plus, you can always make friends with an enchanter to DE for you. The only real benefit would be to enchant your own rings, but I'd suggest making the switch *after* you get your epic mount and have enough cash to powerlevel. |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Am I the only one finding enchanting profitable? Using the auctioneer addon, I quickly scan the AH for DE bargaigns, buy and disenchant them, them sell the mats. This sort of farming is of course limited by what is available at ah, but usually i manage to buy around 100g of items each time, selling it for more than twice. Sure, it's not quick instant money, but the next day almost everything is sold. And what's best is that this farming con easily be done while waiting for bg, in around 15 min.

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
I just changed my 55 lock (who had tailoring and mining) from mining to enchanting and I blew through 120 gold this last weekend and only got to 246 (and that's only because a guildie sent me stacks and stacks of soul and dream dust). Enchanting is very expensive and I've started taking my main and soloing lower level instances for green drops to disenchant cause the AH is too expensive for greens on my server.
I highly recomend waiting if you're looking to power level, unless you have a 70 main that can do dailies and get the cash flow you need, otherwise you'll be broke. It's a slow profession to level and I think I should have waited till 70 and made it easier on myself. my 2 cents |

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Well, I'm more of a casual player. This is my only character, and I'm not too concerned with leveling speed. I just liked the idea of making and enchanting my own gear, and was wondering if I stopped mining now, if that 60+ gold would hold out until I could reach a decent level.

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Enchanting can have it's good side.. but as far as making money I would say you need to have invested a LOT of time and money in order to get to the point that you can expect to get anything out of it. You will likely have to farm instances/raids for the enchants that will really bring you money. Otherwise personally, I'd find something else for money making.

Re: Question about taking up Enchanting...
Enchanting is an absolute money pit til you hit about 350 or so. I switched from Mining to Enchanting at 70 and raided the guild bank for any low level stuff i could find before going to the AH to buy mats. I spent a few hundred gold getting myself up to 300 so i could use the more readily available arcane dust and planar essences.
Even once you get to 350+, if you don't have good rep with all the different factions, some of the better recipes aren't available to you until you grind rep. Other recipes like 40 spell damage to weapon have to be farmed off mobs. If you really wanna do enchanting, do it for yourself because you want to be able to enchant your gear and the gear guildies have. Making money with this profession isn't realistic until you get pretty high. The exception to that statement would be if you take the time to farm level 50+ instances like BRD, ST, UBRS, LBRS, Strat, DM, Scholo and places like that. The enchanting materials from those level items are ridiculously expensive on my server because no one does those places anymore. You farm those greens and blues, D/E them and sell the mats and you can probably make some good money that way. Hope that helps. |
