Alchemy 101
I was wondering about alchemy. A proffession I know very little about! Just curious but can you make mana & health potions that work instantly, without having to sit down while drinking? If so at what skill level & on the same token I would like to know if potions that work instantly are available from vendors as I haven't seen any or maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

There are some pots that recover Mana, other pots that recover Health and other pots that do lots of other cool things. Check out ww.thottbot.com for all the info you need on any profesion, quest, skill, Anything O.O hehe. And yes, Potions are all instant unlike food but have a cool down so you cant keep drinking potions back to back.

Yes, there are health potions and mana potions of various levels. You'll typically find the herbs for potions of the appropriate level in the zones you'll be hunting in, with a couple of odd quirks for particular herbs. It's handy being able to make those yourself, but they're easily available at the Auction House, so that's not that big of a deal. The true power of alchemy is the ability to reach into your bag of herbs and brew up exactly what you need for the next pull. For example... I'm out duoing with another warlock (/wave Cytoxin, you ever show up here?) and we get to a spot where we'll be pulling a mix of priests and paladins. 10 seconds later we've both got Holy Protection Potions - something no one would waste space carrying around. My first trip to Blackfathom Deeps was in an "extremely balanced" group of two warlocks and two warriors. Before we got very far in, both warriors had been buffed with potions of Strength, Defense, Fortitude, and (in the hope that it really does do something) Troll's Blood. Ogre magi throwing cold spells at us? There's Wintersbite growing right next to them for Frost Protection Potions. Spiders... better make a Nature Protection Potion. Stranglethorn quest needs items from stealthing panthers, Arathi Highlands quest sends you through an area filled with stealthing assassins... I prescribe one Catseye Elixir every 10 minutes until finished. Stranglethorn again, I'm out solo and I need some water from a fountain across a bridge. The fountain area is clear, but there's a pile of mobs 3-4 levels above me guarding this side of the bridge. 15 seconds later, I'm getting the water thanks to my Lesser Invisibility Potion. (This potion is probably the most underrated thing in the entire profession. You can do a lot in 15 seconds. I'm still in the process of testing the details for PvP.) And, no, I never run out of healing potions. Alchemy is far too amusing. |

Only problem i have with alchemy is you can just buy what you need on the AH. The main Pots I need are easily bought from NPCs or found on mobs, and I hated Leveling Herbalism , even with my horse hehe. Lastly, there are some alchemy buffs that do not stack with PLayer buffs, for instance, Troll blood wont stack with Demon Armor. Alchemy does have lots of cool and useful things, but its just not for me so i went engineering.

I started herbalism/alchemy as soon as I could (level 5?). My alchemy is now up to 241 and herbalism is up to 255. Most of that I've done as a side when questing and PvEing. Only recently have I begun to search for particular ingredients. Let me tell you, though, the recipes get expensive. To be able to level my skill past 225 in alchemy I had to spend 5 gold. I bought some new recipes, one I haven't bought yet is a little over one gold. The others were 50-80 silver. |

every skill costs 5g to go past 225 and the recipes are expensive after that. |

This might border on thread-derailment, but I am (in)famous for that already anyway. Having been thru the grind a bit, I'd say that the one thing I have learned regarding professsions in WoW is to do some combination of herbalism/skinning/mining until you reach level 50 or so. Then switch to what professions you find most fun/valuable for your class. I've done herbalism, mining, skinning, alchemy, blacksmithing (weapon spec), leatherworking (dragon spec) all to 300. I did Alchecmy as I leveled and could have easily bought anything I used regularly from either the AH or other characters hanging around in town. My 'lock has been doing herbalizm and mining. The extra cash I get is actually quite impressive. I am harvesting things that actually sell in the AH now and have a regular income to help with costs such as training. What finally convinced me was watching a character get to 300 alchecmy in 6 days (after reaching level 60). There is something to be said for making your own equipment. My experiences have been that this practicality is very limited beyond the mid levels and the cost/reward just isn't there. Your mileage may vary.
