What determines Medium or Heavy leather when you skin?
Sorry if I'm asking too many questions (hope there's no limit lol) but this is the most helpful website I have come across yet. I have Engineering and Mining on my Warlock, but recently started leveling my Hunter who has Skinning and Herbalism for money making. A guildy of mine is doing the Timbermaw faction thing so asked me to send through any Heavy Leather to help. My question though, is what determines if I get Medium or Heavy leather when I skin a mob? I *thought* it was level related, but I skinned a level 31 mob and got Medium, then skinned a level 30 and got Heavy. Is it just random? Or is there something that decides what I will get? |

Re: What determines Medium or Heavy leather when you skin?
Thats actually a good question, i recently relearned to skinning myself and as far as i can see it its random decision based on level. In UnGoro i kill 48-56ish mobs, they can give me Thick or Rugged Leather. I think the percentage chance of getting the better (Rugged) leather increses with mob level. Example: I kill 10 50ish mobs and get 7 Thick, 3 Rugged. I kill 10 55ish mobs and get 3 Thick, 7 Rugged. I would guess that there are tables which make the "leather-decision" based on the mob-level giving you higher chances on better leather with increasing level. Note that this decision is always made between two sorts of leather, not between all of them. So a Lvl5 boar does not have a 0,001%chance of dropping Rugged leather, it will never do it. Further note that there are special forms of leather that drop only from certain mobs. If they drop it then they do it all levels. Devilsaurs for example can be skinned for DevilSaur Leather.....and all of them, no matter if they are "normal Devilsaurs" or higher level "Devilsaur Tyrants". Same goes for Chimera Leather and things like Dragonscales or Turtlescales. If you do skinning for money-making then you may want to concentrate on these rare mobs which drop "speacial leather" as this gives you far more money at AH - or just to support your guilds tradeskillers. Have fun

Re: What determines Medium or Heavy leather when you skin?
I think you've got it correct - mobs will give you one of two types, wqith the chances of the higher type incresing as the mob's level rises. Also note that lather can be upgraded to the next teir by a leatherworker - so even the lower level stuff is valuable. |

Re: What determines Medium or Heavy leather when you skin?
Wow thanks Tannenbernie, that makes heaps of sense. At the moment my Hunter is just coming into the mid 30's mobs and I'm starting to see more Heavy Leather drop, hopefully it will just keep getting better with the mobs level's. So far I have just been selling it at the Auction House because the Light and Medium leather I was getting is no use to the guild Leather workers as they are all level 60 and have a 300 skill speciality. But now I'm starting to get Heavy they are putting their hand out for the Timbermaw faction hehe. With the special leather, I'm assuming I won't be seeing that for a while? Or are there some I can get around level 30 / 40? Most of the guild leather workers comment on how un-useful their Leatherworking is apart from twinking up and coming Rogue's and Hunters (like me!). Are there any special leather I should take the time to farm a bit for cash? Thankyou for the help too, with Engineering no one really wanted anything I made, (or couldn't use), this is the first trade skill where people are wanting what I am getting lol. |

Re: What determines Medium or Heavy leather when you skin?
Hmm, the real valuable leather will only come in high lvls as far as i can see it. Devilsaur-leather will give you 3G per piece, but then Devilsaurs are tough to kill...hard to solo before level 60. Still i can think of some low-level special-leather-mobs: All sort of turtles for turtle-scales (30ish in Hillsbrad). All sort of Dragonlings for scales (30ish in Menethil if I recall correctly) Good luck!
