Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
Well as of today, serious PvP=Arena, no question about that. I tend to think it is just the way that it has developed. I can certainly envision BGs that has a system like Arenas, it certainly can have all the comps/cooperation/communication aspect of it. It is a HELL lot more difficult to balance though. The problem with the current arenas is that it favours a certain way of fighting. Healing>DPS, and Outlast>Burst. LOSing also hurt certain classes more. That is why SL/SL "works", and Destro does not. I absolutely do not dispute that at the highest level of the current arena, SL/SL works better than destro because it FITS very well with the current arena requirement. I mean, a warlock and druid duo will just hump a pillar, one will dot you, the other guy will hot/lifebloom. I guess there is some degree of skill invovled in humping pillars and making judgements. I am also petty sure that it is MUCH easier to play than destro. The point of the post is mostly to dispel some common misconception about the spec. The well informed and intelligent locks on this forum deserves the truth about destro. Quote:

This also shows why destro or other nuke builds don't work too well in arenas without CC. I can get an opponent down to very low levels, but all it takes is a stealthed druid to throw a NS-->Regrowth instant to reset the fight, while I have used half my mana.

Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
Long time lurker of this site, it was basically my bible while I was leveling my first toon, a warlock. I eventually stopped playing it because I was unhappy playing SL/SL and it seemed like it was the only way to play in arena, and 0/21/40 shadow bolt spamming in raids wasn't fun for me anymore, so I leveled an alt and got into him. Couple days ago I read through this thread and it made me want to play my lock again, so I respecced to a deep destro build (0/7/54) and I've been having a blast. My gear isn't quite where I'd like it to be, but I'd like to say its decent. 414 Resil 11.9k HP 915 spell damage (w/ Fel Armor) 23.8% crit (working on it !) So far It seems like I can take any class 1v1 except rogues of course. I actually do better against rogues right now, but I think thats because they're used to seeing SL/SL and they allow a couple casts to get off and they realize it kind of hurts. Tough match ups are warriors (especially the good ones that use spell reflect liberally) Frost mages and equally geared hunters of any spec. Any other class/spec I do fairly well against and can expect to win more than I lose. I ran this week of arenas with a Sstep/Hemo rogue with just under 300 resil and around 1750 AP. We started at 1455, and we ended at 1451, but we were about 14 games in and we were sitting at 1545. We did really well against double DPS teams, and even beat the dreaded Frost Mage/Rogue combo which I expected to lose. Our biggest problem is fighting a team with a healer that can instantly save his partners life from 5% to full (Druid, Shaman looking at you!) Basically, if they got that heal off we lost the game. Having to restart on the DPS and having to re-CC healer was too much to come back from. However Priest/DPS and Paladin/DPS didn't give us too much trouble. As long as we were on top of our CC we were fine. I just wanted to share my small experience with running Deep destro in 2s. Its a lot of damage, its a lot of CC but even with all this control you still can't keep nature swiftness'd heals from coming off and ruining your game. I'll still run this spec as its the most fun I've had with my warlock and I know that I really want to be around 30% crit, but I don't see going about 1600. |

Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
First thing, one suggestion for you is to use a Chaotic Skyfire Diamond for your Meta gem. It gives you a +12 Spell Crit rating and +9% more crit damage (because of a weird way that Ruin is calculated). This is perhaps one of the best gem for Destro PvP. In 1v1, a well geared / war glaive rogue will give you trouble of course, especially given that you are likely to run with a Felhunter in stead of a voidwalker or succubus. The great thing about destro is its 1v1 viability. There is no matchup that is an automatic loss. You are right, the point of this original post is to tell people that Destro isn't really as squishy as some people might think, and in fact our only bane is really instacast healers like druids, who can LOS/HOT/ Lifebloom to oblivion. That is why the best partner is someone who can CC AND Burst. SHS rogues are great for this, ( I wish I have one as a partner). I don't have the perfect solution to this, but I have found that if you can quickly and surprisingly do target switches, you can often gib an opponent relatively quickly. Nature swiftness, swifmends will happen, so try to get your opponents to blow those quickly, and then utilize that cooldown period to maximize your burst. The margin of error is very small, but when you and your partner can take someone down from 70-80% in seconds, it is VERY satisfying. Good Luck

Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
Just a quick update for any other curious destro locks! Just finished some arenas and we broke 1600! finishing this week at 1610 with personals of 1603 each. Great news for me because I'll have enough points to get the brutal chest and thats my only piece of dreadweave I haven't replaced yet. Anyway the more me and my partner play the better we're getting. For healer/DPS we usually split and the rogue takes the healer I work on the DPS then I switch to the healer when the rogue calls it. I don't put any damaging curse on the DPS because when I switch I want to seduce. Speaking of seduce I've actually started running with a succy more. I like it better than the felhound, sucks that I can't devour polys and I don't have a walking counterspell, but I like having my CC on a seperate caster, I just don't use it until I need it. So I never open with a seduce. I use it to distance myself from melee to interrupt a heal if my shadowfury is on CD or when I make the switch to finish off someone so my casts go off uninterrupted. Also having backlash active and getting a soulfire off with cooldowns available (Shadow Fury, Shadow Burn, Deathcoil) means a kill, its just a ton of burst damage. Wheres the other destro locks?! I'd love to hear how other teams are going |

Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
Id just like to bring up a quick point that w/ 2v2's its not really about "servivability" thats what res and 12+HP HP are for, our job imho is damage and only damage as fast as you can deal it. Im in a 2v2 w/ a rogue(luckily i may add) and he saps i get a dot or 2 off then a fear and burn'em down. Now if you have a healer as a teammate then i believe the call for "survivability" is reduced to almost nothing, its his job to make you survive.... So... i like playing Destro 2v2 have had preety good luck w/ it so far granted we havent been a team forever, but im confident w/ time we'll improve even more. sorry for the rambling on but what im tryng to say is just do as much damage as you can a quick as you can and hope then cant keep up : ) |

1) There is no crit chance reduction cap. Yes, there is a crit damage reduction cap. I would like to say I totally agree with you. Destruction is far from dead. I admit I do not have the gear for it. I have been an affliction Warlock since the start of burning crusade now, I switched to destruction this weekend and I must say I like it very much. Instead of long arena fights with a personal druid healer, I am now teamed up with a fire mage. We rely on cooldowns, sure. But we seem to get the job done. I'm equipped with more dread- than felweave, so I can't really say I have the +crit chance for it. I have 525 resillience. I noticed the mana-drain/crit damage capped at 25%. But the crit chance reduction still increases. I'm currenly at 13-something percent. I can post a screenshot later today to show you that resillience is not capped at 490-something, just two effects are capped.. Destruction may be squishy for some. Personally I think I've become better at surviving. I now stand a good chance against rogues and nether protection has saved my hide more than once. Added: As promised.

Re: Common destro PvP misconceptions
Yes you are right and my wording is wrong. There is no cap to crit chance reduction. However, most players out there tend not to stack resilence to that level especially if the crit damaged is no longer reduced. The tradeoff vs damage becomes a lot less appealing.
