The Haste vs Dmg Question

so spell damage increases the damage of our spells, and spell haste decreases cast times...however, i heard from a friend that the amount of spell damage your spells receive is based on the cast time (basically longer cast = more spell damage applied). in this case, would it not mean that getting more spell haste is effectively nerfing my damage? i had had thoughts about getting enough haste to be able to knock off quite a bit of cast time from the longer spells, but i'm not sure this would be as desirable if it is nerfing my damage...any thoughts?

I think it is like the talent Bane. Shadowbolt loses .5 sec cast time, but the bonus spell damage stays the same. I think this happens with spell haste too.

Re: damage and haste...

I would really like to see more first hand information about haste from someone who has obtained several items.

I bet when you are a Shadowbolt Spammer you will peform great with the cast time. The Mana Argument is not totally valid for Warlocks.

Re: damage and haste...

Lazyslothboy has it right, the spell damage coefficient that spells receive is based off of cast time, but its based off of a spells original, untalented, unmodified cast time. So when you get haste effects, all your spells still have their normal spell damage coefficients.

Re: damage and haste...

Yup, if reducing cast times reduced the damage dealt there would be no point to reduce cast times.

Balancing Spell Dmg / Spell Haste

Hey guys,

It seems all the new stuff is about spell haste. How do we go about balancing spell haste and spell damage? Ie, 1 point of spell damage is ok to give up for how many points of spell haste?

Thank you for any insight,
FI

Spell haste V spell damage

First the conclusion is for 0/21/40 shadow locks on when 1 point of spell haste is more powerful than 1 point of damage: answer is 1233 shadow damage.
For fire destro locks (spamming incinerate not immolate): 1220.4 fire damage

All the complicated math is found in the following

Re: Spell haste V spell damage

Interesting numbers there. I've always heard people preach 1400ish shadow damage until haste is better than damage. This makes me want to re-gem with all haste/damage gems!
