Re: The Library has a new look!
(pulled from my post on The Library has a new look! - The Warlocks Den Forums ) I'd like to request a "Beginners Guide to Theory Crafting" if I could. Recently, while reading the "Chaos Bolt - Where does this leave Soul Fire?" thread, and looking over the math It occurred to me that I had no clue what I was reading. If I wanted to dive deep into theory craft and crunch a few of them numbers I've read about, where would I start? what numbers would I need to begin my crunching? I'm clueless. Some things I'd like to learn how to do:

Re: Age of Conan GMs was duped into cybersex!
Great idea Pernicious. I'll do the basics of spell coefficients. Most of it is paraphrased from Spell damage and healing - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft Spell damage coefficient - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft Direct Damage Coefficients indicate how much of your +spell damage gets applied to a particular spell. For most direct damage spells, it is based on a 3.5 seconds cast time being the norm. To find out the coefficient for your spell, divide the untalented cast time of your spell by 3.5. Lets use Shadow Bolt as an example. Untalented, Shadow Bolt has a 3.0 second cast time. 3.0 / 3.5 = 85.7% coefficient. So if you have 1000 shadow damage, shadow bolt gets 857 added to its base damage. This does not take into considerations any talents which increase the spell damage the spell gets (Shadow & Flame), or decrease the casting time of the spell (Bane). Talents which decrease the cast time of the spell do not effect the coefficient. Incinerate has a 2.5 second cast time, untalented. 2.5 / 3.5 = 71.4%. If you have 1000 fire damage, Incinerate gets 714 added to its base damage. The shorter cast time spell has a smaller coefficient, and received a smaller bonus from your +damage. This is what people mean when they say Shadow Bolt scales better than Incinerate. Any spell with a cast time of 1.5 seconds or less is treated as having a 1.5 second cast time. All instant cast spells are treated as having a 1.5 second cast time for determining the coefficient. Damage over Time Coefficient Damage over time spells use a different method to calculate their coefficient. The "norm" for damage over time spells is 15 seconds. To find the coefficient, divide the duration (not cast time) of the spell by 15. Unstable Affliction has a 18 seconds duration. 18 / 15 = 120%. If you have 1000 shadow damage, Unstable Affliction receives 1200 added to its base damage. Unstable Affliction (rank 3) does 1050 base damage. So 1050 + 1200 = 2250 damage over 18 seconds. Ticks are every 3 seconds, unless the spell says differently. 18 / 3 = 6 ticks. 2250 damage divided over 6 ticks is 375 per tick. There are lots of exceptions. Corruption is 18 seconds. Corruption should have a 120% coefficient, but does not. Corruption gets a 93% coefficient. Untalented of course. Siphon Life is 30 seconds and should have a 200% coefficient. It only gets 100%. Curse of Agony is 24 seconds. Curse of Agony should have a 160% coeffcient, but does not. Curse of Agony gets a 120% coefficient. Curse of Doom is 60 seconds and should get a 400% coefficient. Wouldn't that be just great!!! It gets a 200% coefficient. Thats the easy part. I am not going into hybrid spells (Immolate - both direct damage and DoT) or area of effect spells, or channeled spells. Does this all make sense so far? |
