Warlock Leveling to 80 - AE dotting as SL/FG (Video Inc)

Introduction

I put together a video to illustrate what is definitely my favorite way to level in Wrath: Warlock Leveling: Aff/Demo in WotLK By Jynxx

While The Burning Crusade leveling was strong with a healer, just casting instant-cast dots and using siphon life, along with instant Howl of Terror, Wrath of the Lich King gives us some very very nice...

Thank you for such an EXCELLENT post! It has helped my thinking enormously. Quick question for completeness... what dots are you using and is it SoC (very slow to cast I find) that is doing the multi damage I see on the video? Some casting sequence strategies would be great if you would be so kind enough!

Perhaps you did not see the original spec posted. For the record, it shows 2 points in mana feed. Jinxx agress with you.

I would like to propose a slight update to your information with different specs.

Starter at 70: (21/40/0)
Target at 79: (29/41/0)

I think for the starter area, you will level much faster with SL/VW than Felguard/no SL.

Also, you leave out recommendations for Glyphs.

Right from the start, I think Glyph of Siphon Life is a must. The second major glyph slot is up for grabs imo. Maybe Glyph of Felguard or just keep Glyph of Corruption for the instant SB casts.
Would be nice if my server HAD any new glyphs...

The dots cast are:

Siphon Life
Curse of Agony
Corruption

The AOE spell you see cast in the video is Shadowflame (a new Spell that Warlocks learn at level 75).

Re: Warlock Leveling to 80 - AE dotting as SL/FG (Video Inc)

Wanted to drop in and say a big "THANKS!" to the OP for turning me on to this spec.

Thus far, in the HF starter zone I have solo'd a group 2 and group 3 quest with no issues.

I did want to add that I went into HF with the SL/VW combo and it was working out just fine for me - enough so that I would recommend it to others. I have since dinged and am now using the FG.

My only real issue is that the mobs seem too widely spaced apart. So I often send my pet to attack one mob, recall him after he aggro's (so he follows me around), then run around throwing DoT's on anything nearby.

I've been following the OP spec exactly. And I must say I have a hard time customizing it further. Even with a lot of players competing for mobs, I just keep dotting non-tagged ones and keep up the train of mobs until I have a good few. Even if someone tag one or two I still have a blast AOE-instant-dotting them down while my FG cleaves to his hearts content.

So far so good. Cheers!

Re: Warlock Leveling to 80 - AE dotting as SL/FG (Video Inc)

Does anyone have a good area to grind? I found a nice little clearing in coldara where the dragonkin and giants spawn pretty quick. If there isn't a whole lot of competition I can usually keep at a minimum 2 mobs dotted up at all times with up to 6 or 7 going when they spawn fast. Never have to stop. But after a while I get a bunch of skinners hanging out to skin everything and they end up getting agro'd by new spawns.

I will say that's the worst part about this build...stopping to loot the massive amounts of corpses lol.

Re: Warlock Leveling to 80 - AE dotting as SL/FG (Video Inc)

I had been toying with the SL/Felguard idea, and went and spec'd that way. It was, in my opinion only so so until I read this guide and a few things clicked in my head.

First: I had screwed up my respec, so I had to bite the bullet and pay the 50g to get it right. And I screwed that up as well, lol. So, 100g later I had the spec right. Makes a big difference getting 2/3 mana feed! I leave out Demonic Tactics and DS. I get Demonic Brutality and Imp Health Funnel. Last year I would laugh at Imp Health Funnel, but it actually heals well now, and as much as I'm relying on a minion, I need it. You won't be soloing big nasty elites without Health Funnelling a whole bunch. I also went for Curse of Exhaustion for those "oh crap" moments when I have already gone thru one minion, insta-summoned a second and still need to buy time. Of course, since I talented for it, I haven't had the need, but better safe than sorry.

Second: Use the VW for big baddies. You can solo pretty much anything with the VW. The Felguard is great for pretty much anything under 30,000 health. Over that, I go to the VW. DPS nice and slow, Corr, SL, Curse of Agony. Health Funnel as needed. I have 2T5 and 2/2 Fel Synergy. I have yet to meet a mob that can take out the VW if I do it right.

Third: Don't kill one mob at a time. In the same time it takes me to send in FG, DOT up and kill one mob, then move on and kill a 2nd mob, I could have killed 8-10 mobs without much trouble. Sure, I'm going to be at 50% health/mana, maybe less, but I haven't burned any cooldowns yet. Once I do 8-10 and loot them all, I life tap my mana back full, then send FG, Siphon Life/Drain Life a single mob (could also bandage instead). You can go forever like this.

Fourth: Pushback changes. I had completely forgotten about this. Unless I had instant Howl, I usually forget about the spell because it was usually unpossible to cast it when you needed it. Now, instead of a 1.5 second cast time which got continually interrupted, just consider it a 2 second cast time. No big deal, spell goes off. Really makes a big difference.

Fifth: This is not the biggest single target DPS build. It won't top meters in instances, and you won't raid with it. But for leveling and killing lots of stuff all at once in that crazy hectic warlock way, it is terrific. I teamed with a frost mage for a few quests yesterday just to help him out (I certainly didn't need it) and he almost ran away screaming with all the mobs I had on us. This is a frost mage with their great control/CC abilities who is used to dealing with multiple mobs, and he was blown away by the fact that I was continually pulling 5, 6 even 7 or 8 mobs at once. He died a few times before he realized the best thing to do was get out of my way and just finish mobs off. When he tried to Frost Nova or CC stuff, it just drew agro and he died.

Sixth: New HS at 73. Demonic HS, when fully talented restores 4200 health. That about 40% of my health at 75. Very nice.

Thank you Jynxx for doing the video and putting this guide together.

Re: Warlock Leveling to 80 - AE dotting as SL/FG (Video Inc)

I went a different route, deep deep affliction:

Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft

(I'm level 74).

I roll around with a priest most of the time but solo quite often as well.

I use my felhunter and 2-pc T6.

I run around and will pull 8-10 mobs with SL, then I start tab-casting SoC (if I pull another mob by accident it's irrelevant as anything pulled into this madness is dead shortly thereafter).

I view it as a completely defensive build, if I need a big heal I haunt or Death Coil and spam Drain life.

Curse of Exhaustion is outstanding for kiting certain elites around.

I really like this...

the only downsides to this build are:

  • you have to re-spec for raids.
  • the majority of my gear is BC purple, Wrath of the Lich King green, a T4 helm, and some BG gear. My FG does seem to get down pretty low in health pretty quickly. This build says you can pull 4-6 (or more) at a time and I'm typically only getting away with 3 or 4. I believe that is solely the fault of my semi-lame gear.
the first criticism is obvious and the second doesnt matter because Im still grinding faster than my old grinding build (which was also my raiding build) using deep Affliction.

I look forward to 9 more talent tree points, being able to build the damage back up, and getting another AoE spell in there will be nice.
