PvE Demonology "Shopping List"

Last Updated: Feb 2nd, 2008

*****************************************

The Art of shopping for your Demo needs
*****************************************

This guide is solely aimed at PvE. While some PvP items will be listed the intention of this guide is to supply a "loot list" that's tailored to demonology warlocks that are raiding Zul'Aman, tier 5 and tier 6 instances.

It is not a thread about Demonology raid viability, please take that discussion somewhere else.

But I'm pre Zul'Aman, tier 5/6 equipped...

Then take any loot that drops that's an upgrade :p
Aim for this order:
+spell hit (unless your 202)
+spell Damage
+shadow Damage (as you do use fire, but your mostly shadow)
+spell crit (20-25%) on SB is fine at this level of gear)
+spell haste (most the items with it here are Badge loot, and not that great)
+Stamina (should be on most items anyway, don't gear for it directly)
+Intellect (likewise comes on most items anyway, don't gear for it directly)
Pre-raiding Tips:
  • Gem up for +hit/+damage unless your hit capped, then just go damage, or damage/crit if your crits really low.
  • Get Spellstrike/Frozen Shadoweave set made, they will see you into T5 and even T6 (ish).
  • Get an arena team, even a 2v2.. if you suck it doesn't matter, get those points 200 a week if you have to. Buy a S2 weapon (S3 if you have the rating) then you can ignore 99.9% of the weapons that drop in raids :p
  • Get revered with the Sha'tar for Glyph of Power this is THE head enchant, no contest.
  • If you can, pick Scryers, and get revered Scryer's Bloodgem makes +hit stacking easy.
  • Rep grind to Cenarion Expedition - Exalted also for Ashyen's Gift more easy +hit.
Badge Loot
  • I highly recommend the entire FR epic set (100 badges total), you'll need this in SSC for Leo.

Karazan
Ok, enough with the low end raiding, on we go.

*****************************
My Felguard goes to SSC/KT
*****************************

Note: you will want 2/5 Tier 5 and the voidstar, you can cope without them but they make life much MUCH easier.

HEAD
Cowl of the Grand Engineer - TK - Awesome helm for most, take if you already have two tier 5.
Hood of the Corruptor - SSC - take if you lack 2/5 T5 or the above helm.

NECK
Nothing worth getting, use Ritssyn's Lost Pendant from Kara.

SHOULDER
Mantle of the Corruptor - TK - Easy to get (lootreaver) and excellent for you, grab grab.
Illidari Shoulderpads - SSC - Ok, but you want Tier 5 really.

BACK
Nothing, only decent one drops of Kael, and if you can kill him your going MH soon where the trash drop godly cloak drops.

CHEST
Vestments of the Sea-Witch - SSC - What can I say! One of the best chests in the game for any lock, get it if you can.
Robe of the Corruptor - TK - Take if you don't have Vestments of the Sea-Witch.
Robe of Hateful Echoes - SSC - Get it if you must, but it's not that great.

WRIST
Nothing worth getting, use Vindicator's Silk Cuffs from Honor Farming.

HANDS
Gloves of the Corruptor - SSC - Take if a) you don't need hit or b) you need 2set bonus else use Handwraps of Flowing Thought from Kara

BELT
Cord of Screaming Terrors - SSC - as we don't need "tons of crit" this belt is the best for us, awesome.
Belt of Blasting - Crafted - Get it only if your sick of waiting for the other belt to drop.

LEGS
Leggings of the Corruptor - SSC - Awesome legs, get them.

FEET
Boots of the Shifting Nightmare - SSC - Replace FSW with these, they rock, good hit, good damage and lots of Stamina.

RINGS
Ring of Endless Coils - SSC - Quite nice ring and will last well.
Band of Al'ar - TK - Ok if you don't need +hit, personally Kara rep ring + CE exalted > this

TRINKETS
Void Star Talisman - TK - GET IT ! GET IT NOW !

WEAPON
The Nexus Key - TK - Nice staff, crazy stats, worth getting if you lack a S2/S3 (I use this currently)
Fang of the Leviathan - SSC - If you don't need hit on your weapon, this is nice, but a S2/S3 weapons better (as normal)

OFFHAND
Nothing worth Taking, use the badge reward Orb of the Soul-Eater or Fetish of the Primal Gods it is better.

WAND
Wand of the Forgotten Star - TK - Great wand, defiantly worth getting

*********************************
Bring on the silly loot (MH/BT)
*******************************
**

Entering T6 you should be 202 hit capped, have around 25% SB crit and with Fel armor + FG out around 1.1k Damage, and 9.5k life (unbuffed). From here on it gets silly, and you'll learn to love those +12 spell damage epic gems

Another note, a lot of the non teir loot is really good, but having 4/5 tier 6 eclipses the individual items. (you still want to keep 2 Tier 5, even once you have full Tier 6, so you can swap in for the set bonus healing on pet unfriendly fights)

HEAD
Cowl of the Illidari High Lord - BT - Best helm in the game, get it unless your using T6 helm for 4/5 Set Bonus.
Hood of the Malefic - MH - Hard to pick this as 2nd, with the 4/5 Bonus is the best helm in the game, but once you have all the other T6 loot the above wins.

NECK
Translucent Spellthread Necklace - BT - At last, something to replace the Kara neck with

SHOULDER
Mantle of the Malefic - BT - Better in almost everyway for us, easily first choice.
Hatefury Mantle- MH - The stats suck, but god the damage and crit is handy, take if you cant get T6 yet.
Blood-cursed Shoulderpads - BT - Weak, take if its a last option.. I'd rather keep T5 than these..

BACK
Nethervoid Cloak - Trash Both - WIN ! just get it.. no debate.

CHEST
Robe of the Malefic - BT - Take it, if you get into 5/5 T6 you can sub out legs or head for the superior non step items.
Robes of Rhonin - MH - Take ONLY IF YOU MISSED Vestments of the Sea-Witch, that +epic gems = way better.

WRIST
Cuffs of Devastation - MH - slightly better than the PvP ones, not much better but worth taking.
Focused Mana Bindings - BT - More pointless loot, don't touch these, PvP or Rages ones > these.

HANDS
Gloves of the Malefic - MH - Fricking Awesome gloves, and Tier loot to boot

BELT
Anetheron's Noose - MH - Awesome belt, damage, crit and good stats.

LEGS
Leggings of Devastation - BT - Great Stats, Highest Damage in the game (with right gems) and Great +Hit, get unless you in 4/5 T6.
Leggings of the Malefic - BT - Again, if its not needed for the 4/5 Bonus its 2nd place, if you need it for 4/5 it wins.
Leggings of Channeled Elements - MH - Ignore the spirit, these legs rock get them unless your guilds killing mother Shaz and beyond.

FEET
Slippers of the Seacaller - BT - Best Boots, as long as you don't need +hit.
Blue Suede Shoes - MH - Good hit, good damage, great stats only lack of sockets makes this 2nd.

RINGS
Ring of Captured Storms - BT - Once you look past the no stats, this ring is insanely good.
Ring of Ancient Knowledge- BT - Great Ring, get two unless your MH rep is nearly full or you have the above.

TRINKETS
The Skull of Gul'dan - BT - Great Trinket for all spec's. Get it, that + VST is probably the best setup a Felguard lock can have.

WEAPON
Zhar'doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer- BT- AT LAST, a PvE weapon that isn't beat by a PvP one.. so much haste...damage... everything
Tempest of Chaos - MH - Great Weapon, get it if your a 1-hander lock, and it looks cool to boot.

OFFHAND
Chronicle of Dark Secrets - MH - if you use a off hand take this, it wins, end of story.
Blind-Seers Icon- BT - does not come close to the above, take it only if you badly need the +hit

WAND
Wand of Prismatic Focus - BT - Better than the T5 wand, so replace time

******************************
Playing with the trolls (ZA)

******************************
Rather than list everything, I'll list the key items in Zul'Aman that make people go O.o Some of the stuff here is crazy.

Hex Shrunken Head - Silver Icon replacement, its great if your not full on trinkets.

Hood of Hexing - just Imba Hood, bets all of T5, and will only get replaced at the end of T6 (I use this with 3x+12dam gems at the moment)

Amani Divining Staff - Cool staff if you gem it right, will last until deep into T5/T6 unless you Arena.
Blade of Twisted Visions - Pretty nice if you've not got anything better, but you probably should have if your in Zul'Aman :p
Wub's Cursed Hexblade - Ok if you can cope with no Stamina, and people laughing at you for having Mp5, but there's better out there.

Fury of the Ursine - Nice if you really hate PvP, or are not in T6 yet.

Mantle of Ill Intent - Pretty nice if you lack T5 currently.

Robe of Departed Spirits - Good if your not a tailor, or lack the T5/Vestments chest, but its a side grade for most.

*******************
Enchants and Gems
*******************
Enchanting
This for Demo is really.. REALLY simple.

Head - Glyph of Power
Shoulder - Which ever Scryer/Aldor one you can get (most locks go scryer for bloodgem even though Aldor enchants are better for demo)
Back - Enchant Cloak - Subtlety
Chest - Enchant Chest - Exceptional Stats (+health doesn't scale to pet)
Wrist - Enchant Bracer - Spellpower , if your cheap use Enchant Bracer - Superior Healing (5 less damage but dirt cheep)
Gloves - Enchant Gloves - Major Spellpower
Legs - Runic Spellthread, use Mystic Spellthread if you have issues with nethers.
Feet - Enchant Boots - Boar's Speed (unless you have Dam/run speed meta gem) then it's Enchant Boots - Fortitude
Weapon - Enchant Weapon - Soulfrost once you have a worthy weapon Enchant Weapon - Major Spellpower till then.

Rings (if enchanter) - Enchant Ring - Spellpower

Gems
Gemming is a little more complex, as it changes depending on what total gear your in. Rather than a complex plan just follow these simple rules.
  1. If your not hit capped gem for +hit or +hit/damage (I once had both spellstrike items loaded with 3x+8spell hit :p)
  2. Keep spell crit around 25%-30% on Shadowbolt, this helps keep up Improved Shadowbolt Debuff. (20%-25% if your pre T6)
  3. Done the above ? then load up +damage galore.
  4. Sod socket bonus's 3 x Runed Crimson Spinel beats any socket bonus I know, once your hit and crit are sorted.
  5. You get enough Stamina from gear and talents, don't waste gem slots on +Stamina or +dam/+Stamina.

*******************
Overview
*******************

There you go, all you up and coming demo locks, hope this guide helps a bit I'll fine tune it some more later and again when sunwell comes out of course. Other than that, ask questions, give comments and such...

Enjoy kicking out silly damage and not dying!

Re: PvE Demonology "Shopping List"

Thanks for the summary. Just one question: What is neccesarily different for Affliction or destruction?

With Affliction you can make up for *some* +hit with supression (not for SBs) and need the same +crit.

With Destruction (Shadowmage Variant) you need 202 hit, +damage and high crit, usually you won't get a LOT more than 30% anyway.

Firelock is slightly different, but few play that anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I just don't see the difference. If I do focus on Demonology as a Felguard spec (I think you mean that) and aim for 20-30% damage by FG you must take into account that the FG has fixed miss rate and no way for making that up. So 202 hit can't be the only aim after all. You need high +Stamina for pet scaling (AOE damage) and generally anything that scales (Stamina, Int, damage, Armor) has more value for your pet. I might be dumb though.

considering i dont play those spec's my answer may be a little limited but..

in general Destro goes for more +crit and places less value on stam, its quite common to see destro locks wearing +damage items with awful stats on them (like belt of blasting) most destro locks i know float around 30% crit
raid affliction (ones with at least 11 destro) tend to load up on +hit first, then damage, and only float around 20% crit.
with both the above spec's its quite often for them to take non-tier set epics over T5 (or even some T6 apparently) while with a demo lock the tier loot is generally your best friend.

Oddly Demo raiding isn't all about the Fg meleeing, he should do around 16-20% of your damage in a "tank and spank" boss fight.
maybe oneday they'll add +hit pet scaling and that will change.
Getting your felguard to 6k life unbuffed results in it having nearly 10k when full raid buffed, that is enough to survive any encounter except the couple that are totaly anti felguard.
there's no need to stack tons of stam on a raid demo lock, getting a 6k felguard is just a matter of getting Tier loot, and progressing into T6 instances, while stam is nice because of DK's scaling it is overshadowed by stacking +damage in terms of DPS ability.

Demo is really about the raw base damage you have over other spec's and the survivability. (currently raid buffed i hit 1.5k+damage and float around 13k life / 10k mana (and im still wearing spellstrike pants)
once the buffs start stacking on you and your felguard your gains become comical, its great now greater kings treats your FG as a warrior for class buffing.

Gear wise

Demo walks the middle line between affliction and destro, with more emphasis on base damage.
you still need the 202 cap like all warlocks that raid T5+
you want more crit than an affliction lock, but less than a destro one, generally your gear + DT gives enough crit, so you can forget about +crit gems that many destro locks still use.

You have 15% more stam, 3%more life and soul link.. and your looking to pick up tier gear quite often over the non tierset loot. this alone gives you more than enough STAM and INT making those gems also pointless.
in the end this lets you load up on +9/+12 spell damage gems and watch your base SB hits and your felguard attack power to skyhigh.

Hope that explains things.

Thank you, it was going slightly off topic
and sorry i didnt post it here in the first place (silly me)

I'll update it with more pre raid loot soon, but with the PvP season one now costing honor, that pritty much overshadows most of the actual pve pre-raid loot. so im tempted to say if your pre-raid farm S1+S1 weapon.

I dont really PvP enough to write a detailed pvp guide yet (only got 2xS3), but ill put up some pointers soon.

Re: PvE Demonology "Shopping List"

you said there was no decent back untill TK/MH, but Ruby drape of the mysticant that drops of Princ Malchezaar is by far one of the best untill you hit TK/MH. And if you need +spell hit then the ruby drape beats the one that drops from kael.
