The forum thread always assumes all raid buffs.

Re: What's the Hit cap Mr. Wolf?

Ok guys i think my aff warlock is Hit Capped since i have 436 hit (16.62%) +1 point on supression, still while hitting the boss test dummy i don't miss any curse or spell but it still resistes som damage of them. Is this normal or did hit cap changed in 3.1?

All bosses (including boss dummies) have an innate resist that cannot be overcome. (aka. its normal)

Re: 0/40/31 Hit Cap

ok since you haven't searched we'll answer this one

hit cap is 17% for EVERY caster, no matter what race, class or side you play.

Now class and talents and side come into play when you're trying to reach that 17%.
For your 0/40/31 spec, you have no hit talents. So you need to get it from gear and buffs.
If you're alliance, having a daenei in your PARTY (not raid) gives 1%. So you're left with 16% to get from gear or food.
During the fights, there are also other temporary buffs that can appear on the boss which increase your chance to hit. Those come from shadowpriests and boomkins if they have it talented.

Later edit: it's very important that in your character panel, under the hit section, you'll only see the hit you get from your gear and the hit you get from food buff or elixir.
Hit from talents, party composition will never show there.

Re: What's the Hit cap Mr. Wolf?

The datum: "adding hit rating = adding DPS" is true up until you reach 17% bonus to hit. I am certain that 99.9% of posters stating this understand that, but not everyone reading that does so hopefully my expansion helps those who don't to understand that you don't have to keep stacking hit rating forever.

I would like feedback on this point, which was flamed on elitistjerks as being untrue: I stack spellpower and haste in favor of hit rating (to some extent, I keep the mob levels in mind) when I'm not doing a boss fight. I switch into my hit-capped gear for the boss fights. Does anyone else do this and find that it ups their dps? I tried it on the construct quarter trash "up to patchwerk" two weeks in a row. I found that reducing my hit rating in favor of SP and haste during the trash runs actually raised my DPS by 300 more. I also found that talenting to raise my hit rating 3%, in some raids depending on what buffs are available I can still forgo my "hit cap" gear set because a buff will push me well over it. I think the original article of this thread is genius in it's helpfullness, it's simplicity and how incredibly clear the author made it, but this reply is a cheerful plea that "it still has to be thought with" and not every circumstance is the same. I knew a warlock who ran hit capped (17%) while doing dailies in Sholozar... I asked her does she just not want to switch out gear (understandable, who cares when clearing level 76-ish trash) and she replied "no silly, I don't want to miss with my spells, duh...". That was last night so I finally decided to post what I hope is a useful clarification on the subject of this post, and to acknowledge that the original post is absolutely brilliant -- but think with it!

Re: What's the Hit cap Mr. Wolf?

My feedback Sep is that you are right on the money. Between dual specs and gear swapping, there is no need to run "hit capped" vs. level 83 bosses unless you are trying to hit level 83 bosses!

For example, I almost never raid, I'm a more casual player. Mostly I quest and do 5 man heroics. Therefore, I stack Spellpower and Haste since I'm well above hit capped for the mobs I'm fighting. If I do a Vault run, or I ever get time to go to Naxx or something, I'll swap out gear and do food buffs to make sure I reach the hit cap. Now with dual specs, if I was a raider I'd also have my second spec set up with the hit talent, so I could swap for bosses, that makes great sense Sep.

Data is just data, it's only valuable as information, and to get information you require data + context + thought.

Ditto. I mostly run in "heroics" gear which has ~300 hit(without asking). I rarely raid, but when I do, I switch to "raid" gear with ~450 hit. I also have "pvp" gear with lots of stamina and resilience. Outfitter to the rescue

Ooo, Outfitter, yeah that add-on would help anyone run a "generic" trash/heroics set and a "raid boss" set. I would imagine that two sets would suffice for most people. I can't imagine getting into overkill on this point and having four sets (80/81/82/83 mob sets, some arguments against my original threat on elitistjerks mentioned this and they do have a point: are you going to design a set for every single fight, answer: virtually anyone would be happy with two sets.

You can also go back to your "lower hit rating" set if raid buffs already give you a boost. Your mention of outfitter made me start thinking more (oh noesss....). Some people use it so they can swap in and out of PvP (a very good use of outfitter IMO), but honestly if you persistently raid, having two different levels of hit rating gear might be more useful to some raiders, even if just for fun to have the satisfaction that you are "tuned to the fight".

And Lephturn: it might have been mentioned in this threat before (forgive me if it is was already in this thread) but I wasn't thinkign with the hit rating buff food such as Worg Tartare (so many of us devolve to eating Tender Shoveltusk or Fish Feast, you stop thinking about it after a while). That is definitely another variable one can play with, thanks for bringing that point up.

Ultimately whether people want to mess around with tuning gear based on "hit cap for specific encounter" depends on if they enjoy this sort of precision because if they can down a raid boss, it's not like they are therefore "hurting on a solution to deal with the trash". I can totally understand someone saying "to heck with this, I'm just gonna run hit capped and if it's too much hit rating for the circumstance I really don't care."

Re: What's the Hit cap Mr. Wolf?

Just one thing I noticed in regards to dual speccing and swapping spec for hit.

When you swap talent specs, your Soulstone goes poof! Just be aware, I got caught by this the other night as well and wasn't sure what happened, but when you swap talent builds the soulstone you just placed on the healer goes poof. I read a comment somewhere that helped me figure out what happened to my SS on the healer. Oh, and your timer is NOT reset. Keep it in mind.

I do suspect you can dual spec for improved healthstones, drop your green bird bath, then swap specs for DPS and everybody keeps the improved stones. Just make sure you do that first, switch specs, and THEN do your soulstone. I haven't tested this myself though.
