You probably won't cap hit pre-kara but that does not mean you want to forgo hit altogether. When calculating DPS, hit is valued as the best stat until you cap it. That means you want to get hit, since it is more valuable than damage. hence you want to gem for hit whenever possible.

So which is it? Keeping in mind that we are talking about gearing up to DO Kara. Is there a number one should be shooting for as far as +damage goes for a Kara Affliction lock? I know the guide says 600 unbuffed but with only two pieces of FSW a couple of blues and OL greens I'm at 550 unbuffed now and that's without a single gem (or any enchants for that matter) in any of the socket I have available now.
yes, gearing a warlock for kara has always been rather simple. It is pretty much ridiculously easy now, with the season 2 gear readily available and the badge offhand and trinket obtainable with only 66 total badges. 600 spell damage is not difficult at all. Bear in mind here that is the minimum suggestion, and you can do far far better than that with very little effort.

Also why no mention of pure damage gems? Would they not be a better choice if going for damage or are they just too good to use at this stage of the gear game?
the following quote is taken straight from the guide... "Once you get hit capped, straight +spell damage gems are what you will want."

Off the top of my head, I would say that you specifically will be raiding kara at about 8 or 900 spell damage buffed and somewhere around 11% crit. As full UA affliction, I am relatively sure that hit and damage are pretty close to each other when it comes to DPS value at this point for you (damage may actually outweigh hit). But as you gain more crit, hit will become the better stat until you are capped. somewhere around 950 damage and 16 or 17% crit, a 4hit/5spell damage becomes a better gem when looking at the DPS value than a +9 damage gem. You will reach those stats relatively quickly, if you arent already there when you first step foot into kara, so its better to just gem for hit from the start rather than replace +9 spell damage gems constantly.

I would strongly suggest you not take my word for it though, instead you should grab the WoW Warlock DPS Spreadsheet and plug your numbers into it if you can.

Re: Karazhan: Am I ready?

OMG! What a fantastic link! The problem with Locks is they are perfectionists. Have to have the perfect gear, etc. I've just hit 70 and managed to make 27 shadow cloths already. I would not have done this early enough, if I hadn't been trawling through the info on this site. This guide may not be perfect, but will help me gear up for Kara and general play no end! Top marks to everyone who helped to make it happen

Try to find any site close to this one for pure knowledge and passion, for any other class...

Thank you Badkarma138 for taking the time to answer my questions it's much appreciated.

Your last paragraph cleared a few things up for me. Maybe I'm just an idiot but until reading that, some of the things in the guide just didn't make sense to me. Now I think I understand.
