WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

The thread here is about Affliction Raiding. This will answer very common questions such as these: Should I use immolate? Should I drop any DoTs from my rotation? What is the rotation? My DPS is really bad, what am I doing wrong? How can I get better at affliction? This will be broken up into 2 posts. The first, below, dealing with DPCTs and whether or not you should cast all of your DoTs.

I'll start by clarifying what DoTs should be used. The answer simply...

With respect to 80:

1) In checking the build, I notice no points in Soul Siphon and was wondering given the new Level 77 Drain Soul Drain Soul - Spell - World of Warcraftif the DPCT figure for Drain Soul especially once the mob hit below 25%, would be higher than shadow bolt and, as a result, another equal or better "filler" option?
doh, i fixed that. it was linking to the old 70 build still. and yes, drain soul will be the "filler" below 25%. assuming they fixed the problem with DE's 12% overwriting the 4x multiplier of DS.

2) What has been the experience thus far with the debuff limit?
in a 25 man raid, there's only room for 1 afflock.

Question:

Quote:
Corruption:
1080 base damage + ((120% coefficient + 36% empowered corruption + 30% everlasting affliction) * 2000) =
1080 + (1.86 * 2000) = 4800 base damage.
Where are you getting the "1080" number from? When I mouse-over my Corruption Spell, it says the damage is 1176-1182 over 18 sec at Rank 8.

I'd recommend casting UA before Haunt since UA doesn't tick untill 3 seconds after the cast and Haunt has a cast time of 1-5 seconds. If you start with Haunt you lose approximately 3 seconds of Haunt-uptime. Casting UA before haunt decreases the lost uptime to somewhere between 0.5 seconds and 1.5 seconds depending on how close you are to the mob.

1080 is the base damage. the blizzard UI modifies the number based upon certain things like talents, etc, so your tooltip will be different than everyone else.

you don't lose any haunt uptime by casting haunt first. haunt should be up 100% of the fight from the very beginning.

besides, you want to be casting UA and immolate together, so if you cast that pair before haunt, you'll have ticks that will go off before haunt and the 2nd stack of SE is up.

there's no mention of glyphs. have you done any testing on which are best for affliction?
I'm specifically undecided between siphon life and immolate glyph.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

This guide is essential reading for any raiding warlock.

It has made me have to seriously think of respec back to afliction.

I would be interested in your comments and insights as to how Spell Damage/Haste Rating/Hit Rating figure in the dps under these circumstances. I know you gave some assumed values for the purposes of calculation, but the relative importance of each in the talent build with this rotation is what I am interested in.

also any comments on suitable glyphs would be very interesting, I assume the corruption glyph would be a must?

Once again thank you, the best guide on affliction raiding post WoLK that I have seen, and I have looked at a fair number to see what all the fuss was about.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

I will be co-author of a new Wrath of the Lich King raiding guide (along with Clearly) that will cover some of these things that delve more into general raiding knowledge such as glyphs, stats, etc.

That said, the value of each stat will depend on how much you have of all stats. This is true no matter what spec you are. This is where you will have to do some work, but, affliction does benefit most from spell damage, and you probably can never have too much of that. ;) (after hit cap of course)

What are affliction locks using on trash? Just shadow bolt spam?

Same thing I've used since 3.0.2. For single-target, quick-dying trash:

Corruption -> Haunt -> Shadow Bolt -> Life Tap -> Shadow Bolt or Drain Soul (and pray for Shadow Trances)

If there's 2 mobs, then I toss Corruption on both, before putting Haunt on the primary and laying into it with SBs/DS.

3+ mobs? Rain of Fire until they are only 2 mobs. Maybe DoT one with Corruption to increase my chance of a Shadow Trance proc.

Even without points in Bane, I still do enough damage to be respectable on trash. My goal on trash is mostly to do a goodish amount of damage, without having to sit down and drink, and without requiring heals.
