WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

The thread here is about Affliction Raiding. This will answer very common questions such as these: Should I use immolate? Should I drop any DoTs from my rotation? What is the rotation? My DPS is really bad, what am I doing wrong? How can I get better at affliction? This will be broken up into 2 posts. The first, below, dealing with DPCTs and whether or not you should cast all of your DoTs.

I'll start by clarifying what DoTs should be used. The answer simply...

Agree.

In my experience, you can spend too much time on the dots at cost to the shadowbolts but, If you practice the Dot rotation you can usually get in a groove where you maintain a high level of dottage and keep yer shadowbolts rolling.

I would say PRACTICE the dot rotation. Use it all the time and you will find yourself learning what dots you can let sit for a sec while you finish off a bolt. Also, your crit rating vs spell damage will determine where you can tip this. If yer spell damage is high, stay on the dots if your crit rating is high, you can let them slide a little more for SB spam

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

Made a change to one section:

If you can pre-cast, you should start with a shadowbolt, and then haunt. Now, many people often ask why you would do this, and some people are even under the misconception that casting haunt after your DoTs is somehow more efficient. Think about it this way: Haunt should have 100% uptime for the entire fight. And since DoTs receive the bonus no matter when the debuff went up (before the DoT was cast, after the DoT was cast, makes no difference), it only matters that the debuff is up. So, why would you cast DoTs first, and have the first several ticks not get any benefit from Haunt? If you're going to have Haunt up the entire fight anyways, wouldn't it be better to have ALL ticks benefit from Haunt? Of course. The same goes for shadow embrace. The first stack is put on by that shadowbolt, and the second stack by Haunt.

So, your intial cast rotation will look like this:

Shadowbolt > Haunt > UA > Immolate > Curse of Agony > Corruption > Siphon Life. After that, you're now into what is called "filler" time. If your raid does NOT have a moonkin druid or unholy death knight, you will use CoE for your curse instead.

If you cannot pre-cast, then start with instant cast DoTs such as Curse of Agony, Siphon Life, and Corruption. Getting these up as you move into position will start your dps up sooner.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

I know this is a really nubbish question, but for some reason i cant seem to grasp it lol. When you talk about pre-cast in your roation what exactly do you mean? "If you cannot pre-cast, then start with instant cast DoTs ", not sure what this means and when would you not be able to do this?

Sorry for the really dumb question, and thank you so much for the guide!!!

In other words, if you are not able to stand close enough to the boss to start casting a shadowbolt without the boss actually being pulled, then you cannot pre-cast.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

I recently switched back to affliction and was practicing the reccomended rotation on a test dummy.

I remember reading this somewhere, but one annoyance is that I will sometimes clip a DOT (barely) in order to keep up a seqence of getting other DOTs b/4 they expire.

What is noticed alot is immolate doesnt get recast as I intended.... (I am hit capped so I know it wasnt resisted.)

Is this a bug?

If this isnt a bug, any idea to best manage this so I dont get stuck in rotations with no immolate?

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

Fallenman (or anyone else who cares to elaborate),

I have gotten down the basic rotation pretty well, and my DPS has improved. My next goal is to learn how to "recast haunt" early to get it in line with immo/UA like I read about earlier on in your guide. (Basically the idea was over the course of teh fight b/c Haunt is shorter in duration, it will get out of whack with UA/Immo.)

I kind of get the concept, but am not sure what to "look for" on my DOT timers as far as the remaining seconds on immo/UA as a clue, etc. In other words, after how many rotations about does this take place (assuming a fight like patchwerk where interupted rotations dont happen.)

I am putting up good DPS without doing this, but just want to attempt to perfect it with this next step.
