WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

The thread here is about Affliction Raiding. This will answer very common questions such as these: Should I use immolate? Should I drop any DoTs from my rotation? What is the rotation? My DPS is really bad, what am I doing wrong? How can I get better at affliction? This will be broken up into 2 posts. The first, below, dealing with DPCTs and whether or not you should cast all of your DoTs.

I'll start by clarifying what DoTs should be used. The answer simply...

If you see UA and immolate about getting close to expire, with haunt right behind it, caust haunt first.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

Again an awsome thread. I switched back to affliction and am loving the DPS improvement.
One question I did not see answered or probably missed is which glyphs should we use. I've kept the SL and Immolate glyph for the first 2 slots, but am unsure and keep changing around the 3rd slot with the Imp, Curse of Agony, and Corruption glyph. Which do you suggest?

2nd question, I'm intrigued with the 6000 plus DPS put up on patchwerk and would love to be able to put those numbers up, but with my gear and a Doomguard have only been putting up just below 4800. Would I increase my DPS with your 53/3/15 spec or your 56/0/15 spec?

Here's my armory:

Thanks for your effort and the great post.

Go with something like my current 53/1/17 spec.

Hi there!

I`, just asking myself why the rotations should be like that:
Shadowbolt > Haunt > UA > Immolate > Curse of Agony > Corruption > Siphon Life

I just wonder why it`s not that way:
Shadowbolt > Haunt > Siphon Life > Curse of Agony > Corruption > UA > Immolate

I remeber its best to use the Dot with the longest duration first.....

:p
Your information about the affl build has been very handy. I do have a question though.

My gear based crit is a bit below 17% at the moment. I am in naxx 10 and naxx 25 gear mostly, though still need to replace 2-3 pieces. I really haven't seen a ton of cloth gear with crit on it dropping in the runs I've been on-maybe I am just unlucky. I'm still below I should be in terms of hit also, truth be told. Seems like a lot of the gear I've seen fall there so far is heavy on haste.

But in any case, I have never picked up 18% crit in raid buffs, even with a moonkin in the party (I think I've been as high as 30 crit with a moonkin).

What raid buffs are you assuming we should have to add 18%?

I'm finding my single target dps output is very erratic with my affl build. Some of it is dots sliding off on fights with lots of movement. I'm finding I am terrible of keeping them all up when bosses get pulled out of range by the tank, I have to dodge and aoe or when there is lots of target switching in a fight. But I also think that "getting lucky" with a string of crits (and Shadow trance procs too) helps boost my dps. So I'd love to find out what I need to get that +18% in raid buffs.

@ relux. in all honesty, it doesn't really matter the order the actual dots are cast in.

@ tesk. 10% mage debuff that goes on the mob. 5% boomkin aura. 3% from ret pally or ele shammy totem.

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

I noticed a number of people post saying for bosses in 10 and 25 man instancing they use the doomguard. In reference to that notion, what are folks using to summon him for the fight?
During the prep-time just before everyone runs into a fight are you using ritual of doom?
Are you using curse of Doom on a mob before that boss room?

Should I be using my imp as affliction, or should I be using the doomguard on bosses?

If the doomguard....which bosses would he be most appropriate for? I imagine you'd have to be selective since after x amount of time he'll attempt to break free and wallop you.

There have been changes made to this.
If you summon a doomguard with ritual of summoning you have him for 15minutes, and when the times is up he just vanishes, no arsekicking anymore!

Also during the summon one of the 5 helping will lose a chunk of health, but it nolonger kills a random guy!

woo, now that just rocks, I had no clue as I kept thinking as you figured...ritual of doom = dead random guy....and who wants to suicide on a pet that can go rampage. What about the one that summons via the Curse of Doom? Same old "quick enslave it before it kills you!"? or is that a 15 minute timer too now?

Re: WOTLK affliction raiding, how-to guide

here's a few comments i have after reading several of the posts (i'm no expert, just things i believe should be considered)

1 - in almost no fight have i had time to just stand and start casting a shadow bolt to begin the rotation. there is almost always something going on at the beginning of a fight in terms of "positioning" in my experience - as a result, i just don't start with it. secondly i'm almost always on CoE duty and because it provides a pretty significant raid benefit, it's my opinion that it should take priority and be cast first.

2 - casting UA & Immolate at the same time is a good idea, but you have to watch out for haste-increasing buffs (i.e. bloodlust, eradication, or trinkets). i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one noticing that re-casting Immolate too early will sometimes NOT reset the DoT effect, and only apply the initial burst. this will cause a big problem in overall damage. as a result... i often break my normal rotation when receiving a haste benefit and will either: cast a shadowbolt after UA, or refresh siphon life after UA (if needed)

3 - every lock should know you use DS when the boss is below 25% health, however in my opinion DS should only be applied after all DoT's have been refreshed and no DoT's should be refreshed until the DS has channeled it's entire duration (causing some of your DoT's to expire before you refresh them). i have no numbers for evidence but it seems to me this maximizes my damage the most. i do not recommend using DS on trash as, in my experience, the mob loses his last 25% life way faster than the DS has time to tick once or twice... might as well life tap or something.

4 - speaking of life tap... be sure you cast this before your Haunt expires. there's no sense wasting the health return you're going to receive

5 - Immolate doesn't generate enough threat to consider not using it... especially if you have molten core talented. i've never had issues in 25 man (or above) and only have threat issues in 10 man when blood lust kicks in and my sb's crit a few times in a row or something, it's rare. if you are having threat problems, better off losing a shadow bolt every now and then. i'm also a fan of the bracing earthsiege diamond meta gem

6 - regarding drain life, this should only be used to help out your heals. i use it a lot on the sapphiron fight because of the constant damage everyone takes... this helps heals pretty significantly since we STILL have to life tap (sapph does normally stay in range when he raises up to drop the ice bomb, but you will generate some threat if you continue to refresh dot's/drain life etc)

7 - finally... back to Haunt. everyone should be aware that the spell does have a travel time. so while the cast time may be 1.5s it travels significantly slower than a shadow bolt. you're actually able to cast haunt and set curse & corruption before haunt actually travels & sets on the target. i'm not sure that it matters to anyone, but it's probably worth accounting for.

hope that helps someone... again just my opinions
