Any help for a new lock?
Hey guys i just joined this site today and i have 2 toons 1 lv 65 Hunter and a lv 24 Lock.
I was just wondering if there is any advice or tips you could give to help me out being that this is my first caster/squishy. Im spec Affliction :: 15/0/0 :: because a lv 70 lock said it was really good but i would like to hear what the majority has to say about each talent tree. Thanks in advance! |

Big fan of Affliction spec...unfortunatley i have only bee using it exclusivley since about level 45 or so. I think it is a great spec for leveling solo, draining mana from your VW can give you almost NO down time. my advice is to learn your Dot's and what they do...when grouping it might be more beneficial to the group to cast a CoS or CoE opposed to a Curse of Agony. you don't always have to go for the damage Dot's. Improved Curse of Exhaustion Is not Improved enough. Let your priest know when you are using Life Tap after combat.(for some reason this confuses the heck outta some of them)

Re: Any help for a new lock?
Drain Mana, Improved Soul Drain, and Dark Pact, all make leveling faster just because you can do a lot without pausing to eat.
I would get the Necrosis add-on. Also, and this is by no means a popular opinion, I would just give professions a skip completely. Just get mining, and sell everything you mine on the AH. This will get you the money you need for a mount, which makes the game go much faster. Same thing for the Epic Mount. Get it! It's great and it's part of the Warlock experience. By skipping a profession you can get the money you need to make that happen. I maxed out as an Engineer, and it never really helped my game. The only other profession could recommend is First Aid. Essential for a Warlock. Cooking is nice later on, 60 and up, because you can get some good buffs. I would also read up on the talent trees as much as you can, and know why you're putting your talent points where you're putting them. Gear is all about +damage as a rule, but early on you'll want as much "Of The Eagle" gear as you can swing. Stamina and Intellect are your bread and butter. Good Luck! |

That needs the talent dark pact. The voidy is awful at regen. The imp on the other hand, phase shifted out, will regen mana back alarmingly. I still use life tap early in a fight (after I apply DoTs but before draining), then drain the health back using my imp's mana. Which incidentally I started doing on getting DP (2 levels ago) and I haven't looked back. Affliction is a very flexible spec, maybe not the best in PvP but it's good in all scales of PvE (though it works best when the tank is making sure more than one target is getting a fair amount of threat from him as the more Targets you can safely DoT the better) On top of that, affliction can off tank. Squishy my arse. If you've got Siphon life running on two mobs that are tanked, you can *easily* hold two normal (and green) or one yellow elite's aggro and not have to worry. If something runs for the healer, throw a couple of DoTs, while healing generated threat, most of the time the targets will be untanked, and so not actually strongly hating the healer. When those DoTs tick, he'll be all over you. If not, searing pain is designed for pulling off squishies. And while we aren't tough, we frequently gear up for +stamina too.... |

Re: Any help for a new lock?
I've been an Affliction lock since day one, and I can tell you one of the most important things to consider is the cast order of your DoTs, and the use of your pets.
You will have several Dot's at your disposal (Immolate, Corruption, Siphon Life, Curse of Agony and Unstable Affliction at high level). The ordering of which you dish these out is important. There are also threads on this forum that discuss that in detail. I personally use Immolate-Agony-Corruption-Life-then a shadowbolt and Shadowburn to finish (i dont have UA yet). Many locks, especially +shadow locks dont use Immolate due to it being fire damage and having a cast time.. but if you're opening up on an unawares mob, why not? the initial damage is nice too. There are several great posts on the varying uses of all the lock pets in the game (Check the Pets section of this forum). For soloing, the affliction lock can easily take two mobs at the same time with VW or succubus out, by DoTing the first mob and sending vw to it, then dotting and fear/dc the second til dead. hope something i said was worthwhile to you. best of luck |

Good way to go on the professions. If you put enough time in to it and sell everything you shouldn't ever have a money problem. I've used mining/skinning to fund my lock (49) and several other alts including a 60 priest. It works out well. |

Re: Any help for a new lock?
For all up and coming locks IMO you should put 5 points in Imp Corruption for the insta cast ability then direct all talents into Demo until further notice. so, until you hit 41 you should spec like 5/x/0. When you hit 41 you can respec and go 31/0/0 and begin to use Dark Pact and Drain Tank. When you hit 51 you can decide to respec to Felguard @ 56 you can have insta corruption and Felgaurd which will take you to 70 or you can stick with pure affliction which will also take you to 70. The only difference between Affliction and Felguard is who takes the beating, you or the Pet. Felguard stands in front of one mob at a time (don't give me that Cleave crap, it can not hold aggro through multi target dots). Affliction (you) stand in front of many mobs (fear if you like or just Drain Tank. The outcome is the same for both, you win every fight, you level fast.
lv 10 - 41 Spec 5/x/0 lv 41 - 56 Spec 31/0/0 lv 56 - 70 Spec 41/X/0 or 5/41/0 Your only problems will be you will miss pure affliction when you spec to Felguard and you will miss Felguard when you spec affliction. They are both awesome and easy to level with. In a perfect workd you could have Felgaurd with all the tool of affliction, but then mages would cry and the world would be flooded from thier tears. When you get to 70 you can think about spec'ing into Destruction, but when you find you're a one-shot wonder (in both regards) you might come running back to either Affliction or Felguard. |

Re: Any help for a new lock?
What, no Destro love? I never have to stop for mana plus I can blast them to the ground if need be. I say spec what looks good to you and what matches your personality, you want to have fun while you're leveling right? Personally, I like the fact that I can be mana efficient but if I need to burn something down, I can(and ohh yes, I do).
