Help with chaining Fears

During the Opera Oz event, I am having trouble chaining my Fears so that Roar stays Feared until we're ready to tank and spank him. I've had the same issue when called on to use Fear as CC in other instances, such as on the Dragon adds in Old Hillsbrad and Black Morass.

To take Roar as an example, either he runs too far away, or runs through the door and thus out of LOS, or just runs out of LOS generally. I use a /Focus macro so that to cast Fear, I should not have to take my attention off the primary target of DPS. However, I often do have to take my attention off the primary target because I have to reposition myself/chase after Roar.

And if I wait for Fear to break and Roar to start running back into LOS or in range of Fear, I get yelled at because I am not keeping him Feared and he often gets a hit in on me or a healer or someone else. This hasn't caused a wipe or anything. Mostly it has just caused me embarrassment.

I just don't want to be incompetent. I'm a Warlock. I should know how to use Fear flawlessly.

Re: Help with chaining Fears

I found that my main issue with chain fearing Roar is that when he gets feared into a wall, you can't re-fear him due to LoS and that causes issues. What I do is, I time my cast to land .5 seconds AFTER the fear disappears, while making sure that I'm positioned close enough to him to be able to still DPS but fear when needed.

Re: Help with chaining Fears

LOS can present a problem with chain fearing. I'm hoping you also use some sort of timer to let you know when fear is about to break?

The only thing I can suggest is to try and keep track of your target while still DPSing the main target (I'm guessing Dorothy in this case). I always wait to move until about 2 seconds are left on fear, however Roar sometims gets stuck on the room geometry and I cannot fear him again until it breaks. Luckily this only happens about once a fight so I just wait until fear breaks and he runs back into sight and then a death coil and then fear.

Another trick that works in this type of situation is to hit Roar with Searing Pain as soon as he appears so that if he does come after anyone, it is you and not one of the healers.

Re: Help with chaining Fears

One of the tanks should hit roar a couple times before you initially fear him. This will keep him coming back to the tank and as long as you stand near the tank he will always come back to range. It is not that important to keep him chain feared as long as hes heading for a tank when he comes out of the wall. Ive never had a problem using this method.

You can try timing your fears as someone said above but he does not always come out of the wall in the same time frame and if your fear is off you will miss and probably be out of position. As long as a tank gets a couple whacks in before you fear him he will always aggro to that tank.

Exactly. There is a reason people don't rely on fear as a main CC and your problems are explain them. This quoted part is something your guild should be doing to ensure there is no trouble between fears.

If I miss-time the fear and get LoS, or if fear doesn't take I'll use DC or iHoT. Then recast fear.

Never even thought of trying that, but then again being Demo spec I'm not quit as squishy as the rest of you.

Re: Help with chaining Fears

Thanks for the great advice. Next time, I'm going to suggest the tank give him a couple whacks before I Fear him. That's also good advice about DC and iHoT. I should have another chance to try him next week, since we've got Oz as our Opera event the last two or three times we've been to Kara. But who knows, maybe the event will change now that I actually have a plan for Roar.

Just wait for the time when no mages turn up and you have cc both Roar and strawman at the same time.

That's just awesome when you can pull it off!

Re: Help with chaining Fears

In addition to the tank smacking Roar a couple times, something very minor that helped me at first was to put a raid symbol over Roar, so even if he goes in a wall, you'll still see where he is.
