Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
Sorry another post about DoT-ing multiple mobs and i know that forum is full of them but they are usually for lover level locks or lvl70 farming. I am in a rush to get to level 70 and this is my first char and lately i have huge problems with this tactics. I do have enough +damage to kill a mob with around 5k health just with my instant cast DoT-s without UA, the problem is it takes too long, usually the last few ticks of SL kills them.
Now the main problem is that while i run from them to dot other mobs or just running in circles waiting for them to die the first one or two mobs i pulled break combat, run to their "post" and heal to full health, and if i try to pull them back with another curse they evade it. Now i don`t run to far i run in circles and they always break combat when low on health. Using fear and standing in the middle of them solves problem but then i have problems draining them since they run out of range, and after one or two pulls i have mana and/or health issues, which basically kills a point of playing affliction lock. So the question is - what is the best place in my level range to do this well grouped melee mobs with around 4500-5000 health that quickly respawn. And also i think that grinding for XP is fastest way to level considering that average XP reward for solved quest is 12k and since i have rested bonus the time i spend running around and solving quests gives me much lower XP per hour than standing in one good spot and just killing, but if you think i`m wrong point it out, like i said i am really in a hurry to get to level 70. Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
The difference between grinding on mobs or quests if of course a personal decisions. For me, I quite liked the gold, the rewards (even if I vendored them) and the rep.....
My normal tactic (as afflock) is to go to the middle of 3 or 4 mobs, start with my dots, iHoT them when they're all on me and drain one while lifetapping/enjoying SiLi. This should normally be enough to ensure they a) all die and b) you have a decent amount of mana/life to attack the next mobs (dark pact and a bandage if you're feeling "too" low) My gear is end T5/early T6 now, but these tactics worked for me in my early days wearing my tailoring crafted gear/Q rewards to give me a few damage boosts and a bit of extra health/mana. Edit: just a point, if a couple of stragglers are still alive and start pounding on you - Shadowburn and/or Deathcoil are also your friends Hope this helps - if you need any clarification - just pop another reply to this post up and I'll keep an eye out. Dont grind, quest!
Kill everything in your path while questing if you like but I dont believe that even rested grinding is faster than questing. If you must grind though, grind something that will drop Motes or other useful things as you will miss out on a lot of Gold in not questing. |

I found it much easier and faster to level from 60-70 using Felgaurd rather than affliction....

Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
I was full affliction ever since I used my first talent point until about level 65, and really didn't want to switch because i loved it so much.
BUT a friend suggested I use the felguard just to level the rest of the way to 70, so I tried it out and found its definitely the way to go. He can take a LOT of damage and holds agro really well. PLUS I found I was able to do most of the 2 person group quests solo with him. It's basically like partying up with a friend. As for questing/grinding. QUEST. At your level there are some really good quests in Nagand.. The clefthoof mastery (and a couple other mastery chains) which basically are grinding, and on top of it at the end you get the 12 k exp from completing the quest. After Nagrand go to blades edge, and at 68 go to Netherstorm. Best way to go imo. |

Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
Just to point out that gold is not the issue, this is my first char but i have two friends from work, they play wow since day one and they "convinced" me to start playing, and also two friends from neighborhood who play wow a long time all on my server so gold is really not a problem. I was just wondering is there a place in the outlands where i could just run around DoT-ing everything like i could in the "late fifties
". With rested bonus i could level in about one and a half hour then. And one more thing not so important but should i cast SL before or after Curse of Agony in my spell rotation? And thanks for the tip on shadowburn i never used this i`m going to respec just for that, don`t know how i missed it.Last edited by Apostrophe; July 30, 2008 at 08:23 AM. Reason: add |

Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
I tend to agree with the above comments. I went from 65-67 in less than 2 days just from doing quests in zangarmarsh. Questing will net you much more xp, and additionally you will get faction rep, drops, and quest rewards. If you insist on grinding mobs, the best places (in my opinion) are the ogres in Nagrand, the Naga in Zangarmarsh, and any elementals for their motes/primals. The ogres in Nagrand will get you Kurenai reputation in addition to the occasional green drop and obsidian warbeads. Personally, I would quest and grind as you go along, but that is my preference and have found it to be extremely efficient.
Hope this helps. Roma |

Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
Since you all agree that questing is faster i guess i was wrong, thanks for the advice. Going to Nagrand now to pick up the quests, but i am staying affliction demo is just not for me, but i am going to respec for shadowburn, can`t believe i missed that.

Re: Leveling a lock from 66 to 70
I just reached the outlands with my lock, who has become my main since about level 25 (have a 62 warrior that was my main up until that point). i had a friend rush me through the first few quests so i could ramp up my gear a little and handle myself solo in hellfire. once i started soloing it didn't take 5 minutes for some random guy to run by and tell me to go demo because it was easier to level that way.
i haven't done this yet, mainly because i'm already at the 25g respec mark (1st lock, took a while to find my niche ), but also because it - so far - hasn't been that difficult to solo quest as affliction. typically, depending on the quest/situation i do one of these 2 things and haven't had much trouble yet1 - load a mob with Curse of Agony + Corruption + SL and fear him away, maybe slap on immolate or a SB while he's going off. move on to the next mob and repeat. i pop DP after each sequence unless my imp is less than 50% and i have a fair amount of health, then i LT. typically with this combo a mob my level will be running back towards me after the 10 sec fear with *some* life. i usually drain it from him to top it off. i can repeat this process up to about 5 mobs without losing much mana/life 2 - round up to 5 guys and iHoT. use LT/DP and Drain Life on anything in range the only problem i typically have is if one of those guys draws aggro that's unexpected. i'm usually able to adapt up to another mob or 2 before i get into real issues. anyway, the only real problem i've had is with fear immunes. usually when this happens i whip out the VW and drain tank the old fashion way (just have to watch the aggro, knowing he doesn't hold it as well any more) mind you i'm only level 60 so... i'm up for reading any additional advice on this forum on getting to 70 from this point. |
