Language - Rant alert!

Does anyone else have the problem where they can't read some posts because of the lanuage used?

I am not talking about spelling or sentence composition as i am fully aware that even as an english person i am often let down by both these points.

I am talking about people shortening every other word to the point where i focus more on what is trying to be said that being able to read what is being communicated.

I don't mean "tbh" or things that are generally accepted terms most know.

I mean "wud" etc. I mean, how much harder is it to write "would" or two extra letters.

Wif is another pet hate, as if Cud and Hav!

We are not sending SMS messages to peoples mobiles after all.

Dear lord please make the effort to write whole words or use commonly known ones.

Yes.

Basically "txts" just get ignored (in-game or on forums), because if it was important they'd have made it meaningful and readable.

Re: Language - Rant alert!

My mom is an english teacher, so I always got crap for not having good sentence structure & spelling. Most of my posts are done on my pocket pc and only when I'm in a hurry do I shortcut through. It does get aggravating when I'm second guessing what is trying to be brought across. I'm willing to help out when I can, but many times I just ignore.

I've been told, repeatedly, in game that I speak very formally. Apparantly, using punctuation isn't the thing to do.

Re: Language - Rant alert!

Personally I love the fact people explore new ways to write words, as it's indicative of an evolving language, which is a good thing in my mind, especially for the english language which has some really awful word constuction rules, e.g. thorough. though, colour, what are those extra "you's" about!?

One example that I use a lot is "tho" instead of "though", mainly because it's quicker to write and people still get the meaning.

If it helps any I think past generations have also struggled with similar issues, using the apostrophe to concatenate words is a fairly new thing, and would have been severely frowned upon in days gone by. Also imagine Shakespear reading some of today's better loved books, he probably would have had a pink fit!

Edit: Altho (sorry couldn't resist) I have to admit I hate the use of z's instead of s's, e.g. "hatez" instead of "hates"

But you underestimate the fact you are working in an international community. People go to school to learn and read and write foreign language. All kindes of grades and ages.
You give those poor souls a hard time. Why? Becourse it is quicker for you?
I am sure you can do better than that.

By the same token are you saying that the international community should only be exposed to "pure" english (what ever that is now) and not coloquel english, of which this and other similar abbreviations could be a part of? And if we opt for pure english, who's english should we use, american english, british english or international english, e.g. "colour" or "color"?

It is not as easy as it initially appears to define an acceptable dictionary for all scenarios, and we can't just pander to the learning crowd as they only make up a subset of the community, which is why we almost have no choice but to take the "good" with the "bad"; so long as the idea is communicated it really doesn't matter if you use omg or oh my god! Ofc people are free to express their concerns about that, and I am confident that throughout history they have done so, and will continue to do so - debate is king!

You could also argue that the speed of communication, especially in a written scenario such as wow could be the difference between life or death, especially if you need to convey a message quickly because they are relying on you for some action.

The speed of communication is also one of the fundemental reasons for many modern day changes to the english language.

I still get annoyed with z's tho!

P.S. Btw thanks to Mistrust for raising what is an enjoyable and very relevant discussion!
