[Vent alert] New and knows nothing threads...

There is an issue that's been bothering me lately and I feel if I don't share it in it's own vent and get it off my chest, it's going to spill over in some other random post or reply and I don't want that to happen. I don't post here a lot (mostly because I don't have a lot to offer), but I read this site more than any other I know of and enjoy it immensly. I thoroughly enjoy seeing all the really helpful replies people give and the fact that new comers are constantly welcomed with open arms, standing out from the elitist "group" atmosphere a lot of other forums have. For these reasons and more, I think that's what makes this the best site for anyone with questions to come to... especially Warlocks, naturally.

Something that has been bothering me the past couple of days however, is the amount of "tell me" posts, the posts from those who have just rolled Warlocks and want to be told everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the questions from people if they have at least tried to figure something out themselves. But tonight was a perfect example when I read a thread from someone who stated they only had a low level Warlock, didn't know "shit" about them and wanted people to tell them the "best spec" they should take, what stats they should look into and a guide dictating to them where they should put said talents for said best spec.

This... frustrates me. This is a prime example of someone who doesn't want to take the time to learn about the class they stated they "really really liked" and expected others to spoon feed them the information, hell I wanted to reply that they probably wanted us to provide the spoon as well, but Akasha locked it before I could say something I might regret. What frustrates me about posts like this is not only the fact they no time is taken to self educate, but the fact that SO MUCH work is put into information on this site, and it's not even being used. Information for example, on what stats Warlocks look for is already available on this site, I've read numerous times there is no "best spec" so why do people keep asking for it?

What's making it more frustrating is the same questions being asked over and over again, and others being posted asking questions on things already explained if they would just look.

I've debated posting this thread for the past few minutes or so, mostly because of the replies I am bound to receive (another issue I've seen cropping up and spoiling this forum lately), but it had to be said. I really enjoy reading the in-depth discussions that happen here, and just hate seeing the official forum style "I'm new and have no idea, please tell me everything" posts that really don't belong. I remember hearing the internet revolution was going to be the information age... yet no one seems to want to search out the information. I hate seeing people's hard work go to waste, and Akasha's work deserves better.

Well, unfortunately, the repeat posts are the nature of most forums because a lot of people out there either don't know how to use the search function of a forum or just plain don't want to. But the joke is on them because what they don't realize is that the search function would probably take them less time than it takes for them to post a new thread.

As for those who wish for infomration to be "spoon-fed", those are fine examples of someone not using the search functions of the forum. If they used that tool they could get all the information they want.

**sigh** Tis the nature of a forum no matter what it's for, whether it be gaming, programming, cooking, etc. I agree it can be frustrating to see but it's an inevitable evil.

The best solution is just to respond to these posts by asking the person to do a search on the forum as the information they are looking for is already available in other posts.

Re: [Vent alert] New and knows nothing threads...

True, it does usually boil down to not using a search function. But I just tried to search for the information laid out on the Starting Stats page, which is where my comment about hard work comes in, and none of that shows up in the search function. It appears as if pages outside of the forum aren't included in the search, yet the information is still there if people took just a few moments to open their eyes.

Another huge plus on this site is that forum section names as well as information pages are so clearly labeled anyone should be able to understand them. We don't post under "the black kettle" or the "mystic hour" etc.

I can say you are not alone in your observations. Something I try to remember though is that for every person that appears to not take a few moments to seek out the answer themselves, there are so many more that do. Well, at least that's what I tell myself. =p

I understand your frustration, but this is a classic problem in all fora (forums?).

I think the best bet is to gently point them in the direction of the search forum, and encourage them to post specific questions......perhaps have a new to warlocks guide, that gives a brief intro and points to "further reading".

I don't think people deliberately set out to glean every ounce of information before playing and in their haste to get going forget that search functions even exists.

You did right not to post a nasty response - that would have been more frowned upon than the post, and you don't want to lose access to this wonderful resource.

You could try filtering the posts you read - if it is blatantly a tell me everything kind of post skip on past....(I can't do this, I have to read just about every post on here).

That's actually what the About the Warlock page will be about, and what the Starting Stats, F.A.Q. and other links on the front page are all aimed at providing.

Re: [Vent alert] New and knows nothing threads...

See I guess that's the root of my frustration. These pages are all being created to give players a head start on what Warlocks are about, that when people don't use them and just start a new post, it becomes annoying.

I don't know, maybe I'm just one of those odd players that likes to put time and effort into my character and learn what they are about. I view it a lot like me being the old fart that is used to doing things myself and these other people as the new kiddies that expect everything on a silver platter.

That all said, I'm also a lot less frustrated than when I first posted this thread above. Now I'm more in the "just shake your head and ignore" state of mind. Just really irked me at the time as I feel like I am seeing so many of these posts the past few days.

Re: [Vent alert] New and knows nothing threads...

I definitely feel the same way as you, Earthangel. I think there's somewhat of an intimidation factor at the official forums for a "newb." When you ask a stupid question or tries to bring up a point, you usually get replies dripping with sarcasm. If you posted this exact same post at the official forums, I can almost guarantee you'd get some QQ-esque replies.

Since those kind of replies are pretty much nonexistant here, the same posters are less concerned about posting questions that they could probably find the answer by using the search feature.

I think a good way to reply to those people is to use a link. Take a minute, search a topic, and post the answer as a link. Granted, these are the people who don't take advantage of the search function, but if more people respond by linking other posts or sources, the topics discussed will definitely be on a higher level than "asking for the best leveling spec".

For quite a while, almost a year, I didn't post a single thing. Why? I use the search function :-D Now I just throw a few comments here and there like this. I still have yet to start a new thread. So rest assured that there are people that use the search function :-)

Re: [Vent alert] New and knows nothing threads...

Just a suggestion, but it's probably waaaaaay to much work: condense threads about frequently requested information and sticky them. These "new player" posts arise sometimes because of a lack of using the search function, and other times because people don't know exactly what to search for. Many informative threads on this site are buried under newer posts, and if the information was stickied then people would be able to access it much easier.

Again, this would probably be a ton of work and take away time from other improvements that might be more beneficial. I'm just brainstorming here.
