Are the guides any good?

I keep seeing guides advertised on the internet for power levelling, gold making, etc. I am not interested in power levelling my characters, but I do want to find out strategies for making more gold - I have been level 70 since August and am still not even halfway to buying my epic mount (about 2200 gold so far).

So my question is, are the gold making guides actually any good, or are they just scammers after your money? I know £20 is not a huge amount these days, but I would rather not spend it on something that turns out to be a waste of time.

I have not, and will not, buy gold - I want to make it legitimately, but more quickly than I have been thus far!

Re: Are the guides any good?

Nice, another ADer To be honest I wouldn't stick to a goldgrinding-guide, just grind the way that fits yourself. Dailies are a great way. I grinded money for my epic mount by selling buff food and primals + doing dailies. Didn't take too long.

Re: Are the guides any good?

First of all, guides on how to make Gold have a general problem - if they become popular then more people try to use the tricks which are written down in them, thus the tricks become invalid.

A small example:
If Guide X proposes to farm fire elementals on the elemental plateau because the drop rate is good there....and now hundreds and thousands of players read that and go there.....then the advise is useless because the place is overcamped and no Gold can be made there.

There are many ways to make Gold fast in WoW, but many of them only work when they are kind of "secret" - if too many people know about it then it doesnt work anymore.

But to your specific problem:
Its very easy to make the needed 5k Gold for an epic mount as lvl70 Warlock, you really dont need any guide for that. Some simple rules to follow:

1) Do the daily quests Ogrila/Skyguard/Cooking. Takes you 1-1.5 hour per day depending on your focus and will give you 100G.
2) If you didnt do all quests in The Burning Crusade yet then do it - as you are 70 already they will give you extra Gold instead of XP. So most quests in netherstorm and Shadowmoon will give you around 20G.
3) Work the AH if you have fun with that. There is no need to be a marketing expert to make money there.
4) Look at your professions, si there any money in them? Do you have a gathering skill? Do you use it with focus, do you use the Gatherer-addon?

Lets look at an example on how long you will need to get the needed 2500G if you play for 4 hours on 5 day per week:
Each week 5* daily quests = 500G (1.5 hour per day)
Each week 5*2 hour per day questing old quests = 500G
Each week 5*0.5 hour per day looking in AH - 200G
In addition during questing you will gather about 10 stacks of Adamantite if you are Miner and additional primals - as an example = 300G
So per week you make 1500 G.
In total you will have your epic flyer in 2 weeks.

Note that there are also many "secret" ways of making money, some very original and funny, others just require some repetitive work. But those will only work as long as you are the only one doing them and its not very usefull to post it here.

Good luck

Re: Are the guides any good?

All those guides are going to tell you pretty simple things that you no doubt already know. It will be things like:
-Play the auction house. Buy low and sell high.
-Do daily quests every day.
-Do all your quests.
-Never vendor something if it might sell on the AH, never vendor it if it could DE well.
-don't waste money buying things you don't need.
-When you farm, farm outside of peak hours.

Things like this are common sense but aren't real fun to do. I can save you $20 right now. . .
It's crappy and no fun, but the best way to make money is to just get out there and do it. There's no secret that will make you rich super fast, just diligence.

Re: Are the guides any good?

I have guides for Pally Lock and Rogue. Do I make tons of money or level to 70 in 7 days? No but I really like the format of the guides I have and I like to read them. I also have both Dungeon guides and the Game guides from Brady Games.

I got in the habit of getting them when I played Console games more for the artwork than for the tips and they are instresting to read.

For a game with the scope of WoW, It is comforting to have a tour guide.

Re: Are the guides any good?

I am prolly ruining this trick by posting it here but, what the hell.

The Orb of Deception is one of the most well-known vanity items in
the game. Unfortunately it has a very low drop rate but this means
it can sell very expensively. The Burning Crusade only helped raise the price of
this item. It can't drop in the Outands. The best pace to farm this
item is from "Razza" or "Skarr The Unbreakable". These are the
rare-spawn Dragons that spawn inside of Dire Mauls Arena. The drop
rate is incredible! 6.2% for Razza and 10% for Skarr. The great
thing about these two rare-spawns is that they will always drop you
some good blues. If it isn't the Orb it will be another great blue
you can sell.

You can solo these at level 70 now, but it's always good to bring a
partner because the Arena is a free for all. I usually farm Dire
Maul for a few hours getting Thorium Ore. If you watch your chat
screen, you will see yells coming from Skarr or Razza. This means
that they have spawned. Once you hear these yells I would
immediately stop over and kill them before anyone else shows up.
The Orb of Deception can sell in upwards of 500g now!

Re: Are the guides any good?

It looks like your problem seems to be time, you only really need to schedule your time better, whats the things your doing that costing you money, are you raiding? You should spend your time by doing dailies maybe working on rep also and completing the uncompleted quests in the outlands. It shouldn't take that long if you focus on just doing those

Re: Are the guides any good?

The only daily I do regularly is the Skettis bombing run - I was about to free the prisoner but got attacked by a Kaliri and a nelf ninja'd the quest while I was right next to the cage :(

I don't know about the other dailies that I can do with my rep right now - I think I need to raise it. I know I can't do the Netherwing dailies until I have the epic mount, which is what I am working towards!

Re: Are the guides any good?

Some info on Dailies for you:

1) Skettis - 2 dailies
Yes you are correct here, Bombing and free the prisoner. Note that the prisoner immidiatly respawns when someone escorted it succesfully. There are only 3 possible spawn points for his cage so once you know them he is easy to find and escort.

2) Ogrila - 4 dailies
You do not need any rep for those, just PreQuests. Ogrila is on the western edge of Blade Edge Mountains and provides 4 daily quests for you. To get them available you need to do a series of prequests which start in Shattrath. Those prequests are 5man quests to kill Ogre-Bosses, dragons and demons and its usually very easy to find teams for those.

3) Cooking - 1 daily
In Shattrath there is the cooking quest giver, quest is usually very very easy and very good money as you get very valuable food in addition to the money reward, sometimes the food is even worth more money than the reward itself.

These 7 quests give you about 80G money reward plus 15-20G items, so you make 100G per day if you do them.

Re: Are the guides any good?

Thanks for the pointers Tannenbernie - I have just looked up the cooking one, and only need to level to 275 (136 at the moment!)

Also I seem to remember doing the Ogri'la pre-quests a few weeks ago, so should be able to do those dailies.

At present I am trying to collect time-lost scrolls, which has taken 3 nights so far, and not even half way there yet :(
