Rotations Shmotations
I love the Den, don't get me wrong. I'm affliction specced and keep abreast of most of the discussions around affliction spec stuff in the Den. But sometimes we get so caught up on getting the nth degree of damage and working out the best rotations that we lose sight of what it is we are trying to achieve. Take my little story for instance: Last night I found myself out in the West of Dragonblight, I'm level 74 now, questing with my lovely Shadow Priest wife. We had been questing for the last week or so fairly solidly and we start questing out there. Being 2 very powerful DPS classes, we have been cutting through Borean and Howling Fjord like a hot knife through butter. We embarked on this quest involving killing these dragonblight mage things. I died! It happened all so fast and so unexpectedly that I was shell shocked. My wife turns to me and says, what happened? I look back through my combat log and in a split second I had what some people call "a moment of clarity". I've now realised that warlock rotations have helped me become so dexterous that I had fully dotted my wifes mob, after it had reflected all incoming attacks. I essentially dotted myself up, none the wiser because I'm watching timers, and within the duration of my haunt spell, I had died! I just sat and laughed, I just said to my wife, that I'm too powerful and thats why I died. ![]() Surely I'm not the only person in this forum who has shared a similar experience? Maybe I should start a thread on how to reduce DPS and what rotations would be involved

Re: Rotations Shmotations
Watching the meters as opposed to the combat is why I can't make it as affliction. I'm sure we've all experienced something like this. |

Re: Rotations Shmotations
yeah, I like affliciton and I like its damage, but I find it hard to learn new fights and stay on top of everything that spec requires so I decided to go another spec for now. |

Re: Rotations Shmotations
Yep, I've done the exact same thing...however it was in one of the 68-70 dungeons in BC. My health started dropping quickly and I soon realized that all of my dots were being applied to me instead of my targets as I was desperately draining life just to stay alive. |

Re: Rotations Shmotations
this is on of the reasons i find timerbuttons the best dot timer for us locks. if you have a mob targeted it will show you the dots on the mob, not the dots you have casted. helps alot with misses too, you can see that corruption not being on the mob cose you're not hit capped yet ![]() Anyway, it is a funny story. Keep that shadow ward handy next time

Re: Rotations Shmotations
If you like affliction and the DPS it puts out over time the timers are just an aid, and you kinda of get the timers ingrained in you. If it's 1 mob, I hardly ever have to look at meters because it's like second nature (I'm not even playing my lock atm, and when I do it's still like oh yeah now, now, now, oh look i'm dead on with timers). I've been reading a lot of griping about affliction, and really i think it's misplaced for those who like the challenge that is associated with it, but hey I'm a competitive individual. A REALLY useful tool for those who don't is DoT's refresh on their CD's or the ones you really have to refresh for the most part. I use Cooldown count and Ghostpulse, which flashes the spell that's coming off CD. It's made it ridiculously useful for me to not watch timers, and not die to AoE stuff/moving etc etc. |
