Interesting story about two newbie warlocks
I will try not to make this a long story but it is fairly interesting the progression of two (I am assuming newbie as I am one) warlocks in a guild as fresh 80s. We both run tons of heroics and get similar gear, he plays a bit more then I do and progresses much faster (I can only play 1-2 nights a week max). One week we have fairly similar gear, the next he rolls 95+ on 4 tier 7.5 pieces and has 4/5 valorous in one naxx lockout. (He was the reason my guild instituted a 1 tier piece per night rule, that and the pug who snagged 3 pieces in two boss fights and left (gluth dropped 2 and thaddius dropped 1)) So he is far,far better geared then I am, yet I keep doing better dps almost every boss fight. At the time we were both running 41/30. I figured out later why he would occasionally wipe the floor with my dps. It was because he had around 90 hit and I had 320+ and would get lucky and hit alot certain fights. So being a nice guy, I decided to help him out. I tried to get him to come to this site but I don't think he ever did. I had him regem for hit and switch a few gear pieces for hit gear to get him to the cap. Throughout every run we are comparing tactics and I am giving him hints on each boss and on his rotation, soon after I switch to aff as my gear gets better and really pull away again in the dps meters. So he switches to aff and is somehow doing worse for weeks. Fast forward to yesterday, at this point his gear is only a little bit worse then mine, he has about 100 more spellpower and 4tier bonus, and I have about 150 more haste and only 2 tier 7 bonus. So last night I finally figure out how to log decide to run a WWS report and check this out. I am destroying him on dps by an average of 800-1k a boss. The difference in our gear and some fights.. he shouldn't be off my dps by more then 300.. 400 tops. I beat him by 1k at patchwerk. (5k to 4k) So after the raid I upload the WWS report and start looking at patchwerk, calculating dot uptime(his was the same or better), checking how many SBs hes casting(he is casting a few less and needs to work on his drain soul executing) He is averaging more damage per SB, corruption tick.. blah blah. I can't figure it out. He actually has better dot uptime and a few less SB but his hit harder/crit more. So I look at Curse of Agony and notice his ticked 90 times and mine ticked 94 times. The only biggest difference was the damage. Mine did 83K+ and was 9% of my damage, his did about 2900 and was 0% of his damage His max damage tick was 63. I have found it. I get to tell him tomorrow and he will probably laugh his *** off. Interestingly though it has made him a much better warlock, I think the last few weeks were killing him. I cant imagine the # of GCDs he has wasted doing about 300 damage a cast the last 3 weeks. When he changes that and actually drain soul executes he will be within a few hundred dps of me and probably pretty damn happy. Now maybe we can have some competition and make each other better instead of it just being a oneway street

Re: Interesting story about two newbie warlocks
was he clipping Curse of Agony? or using a lower rank for some reason.. I'm affliction and i don't get to use Curse of Agony most of the time unless i'm soloing.. i use CoE to help out the raid usually. i generally get around 3600 - 4200 on 25 patch.. depending on raid composition and buffs.. glad to see locks helping other locks.. i got a few guys in my guild i've given pointers to as well. Keep it up

Re: Interesting story about two newbie warlocks
We always have a DK with ebon plaguewhatever in group. Actually we didn't last night and I didn't realize it til it was too late(we had 4 DKs I figured one had it). I actually do more dps casting CoE over Curse of Agony when no one else can provide the debuff. And yeah it had to be a rank 1 of the spell. I did 80K more damage over to course of the fight. Clipping dots wouldnt be nearly that much of a difference. |

Re: Interesting story about two newbie warlocks
Man, that's gotta suck. I've been helping a warlock in our guild try and get stabilized and figure out why her DPS was low. We'd been banging our heads on it for weeks before 3.1 and afterwards we were trying a few things. Once she got dual-spec and set her second one to Destro, she played around with it a bit and slowly started seeing her DPS come up. Then, don't know what happened as I wasn't on the run, but last night in Naxx10 she came in first place on the meters, beating out one of the best Ret Paladins I've ever met pretty easily and increasing the DPS on her last run by nearly 1k overall. We did an analysis of it last night and can't figure out what changed. I haven't talked to her about it yet today (she reads this site, so she'll probably see this and yell at me :D ) but I suspect something about Destro just clicked for her and she took off. I had the same thing happen to me when I figured out I needed to not track anything except UA, Haunt, Curse of Agony, and use a Power Aura to tell me when Corr drops. Data overload is bad, mmkay. |

Re: Interesting story about two newbie warlocks
Talking about warlocks helping warlocks... I was in this guild on Llane during BC, and it was a pretty intense end-game guild, too intense for me. But a friend wanted me to raid with him so I applied and was approved. I had never seen this before or since, but the guild's Warlock Class Leader, or whoever was the ranking Warlock on for that particular raid, had all us warlocks, sometimes 4 or 5 on a 25-man run, log into a warlock-specific chat channel. Then throughout the raid we warlocks would communicate outside the raid chat and us newbies would be instructed on how to do better. That was incredibly helpful to me, and I'm sure other new warlocks. I ended up leaving the guild, which I felt guilty about because they really geared me up; but they were simply too intense. I'd be reluctant to log in after work because I'd be expected to raid from 7 pm until sometimes 2 am every day of the week. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of other guilds do that class-specific chat channel, but I'd not seen that until I was with that guild. it was pretty cool, and an effective way to bring newbie locks along without embarrassign them in Raid chat. |
