Class Census: Warlocks fading out

Warcraft Census -

This is a sample of about 6 million total toons across every world-wide server. The bar graph is pretty self-explainatory.

In less than a year, warlocks (and Rogues) have gone from highs of 10% of the player base to 7% (which is the lowest percentile of all classes that have the census add-on).

This may not seem like a lot. But all things considered, true locks are a disappearing breed.

Personally, I think warlocks have the steepest learning curve for anything outside of levelling.

Anybody else have any thoughts?

Re: Class Census: Warlocks fading out

Until they nerf Paladins, noobs will keep rolling them cause it's EZ-Mode with them. Not to say all people roll them cause they're the most OP class in the game; for tanking, healing, and dps...but it gives a hell of a lot of people a reason.

They've waited too long to nerf DK's and now every person and their mother have one; same reason I refuse to level or even roll one, actually. They still need nerfing as a matter of fact.

I think the reason our numbers are dropping are solely in PvP. We're still top DPS in raids so that's not an issue but, it's nerf after nerf in PvP and a lot of people make their home in BG's and arenas. I really really hope this trend doesn't continue cause I absolutely love playing my Warlock and I don't wanna be a part of a dying class...more reason to keep leveling my Druid though.

Meh, I don't mind so much as I enjoy playing this class and it just means more loot for me! (Plus it was annoying getting gear on my DK as there were 5 of the most populated classes rolling on the same tier pieces, lol.)

Re: Class Census: Warlocks fading out

I completely agree, although I have a 58 DK because I wanted to see that starting quest chain (which is pretty epic I might add).

Anyway, while you could gather that, I do think that PVE is affecting our numbers as well:

Pet management is important for nearly every warlock, our rotations are more complicated than any mage's (who competes with us DPS-wise) and we do require outside help (outside of affliction) to DPS.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that you could just point at PVP issues and say "Yes, that's why." But I think the fact that all classes aren't created equally in mechanics and yet have highest target numbers that the devs use as benchmarks that have to be within x% of each other hurts as well.

Basically, other than Feral Druids, I can't think of a class more sensitive to movement fights......

Re: Class Census: Warlocks fading out

Curious what percentages other classes are at compared to last year - I couldn't see where you pulled that 10% number from for Warlocks. They added a new class in that time, which will eat at the percentage based totals of all classes, because your total is growing because of all those DK alts.

What would probably be a more useful statistic to draw this conclusion is the growth rate of numbers within classes over that period of time.

I'm not saying that you're not right, just that it's likely that all percentages have dropped because of the reality that a large number of death knights have been created, which this data clearly shows.

Re: Class Census: Warlocks fading out

you have to consider the tons of people that were playing BEFORE the DK's came into play, once the DK's were introduced all those plays PLUS new plays leveled DK's doubling their numbers.

and i agree, i don't plan on leveling one anytime soon, i just recently started leveling a shaman aside from my Lock. and that will be about it. i just can't get away from the Warlock. and Death Knights are freakin' everywhere on my server, so i would rather go against the grain and stick with my Lock

I just looked at the chart, and since I have a Gnome Warlock, that makes me the rarest combo for race/class I can have! /cheer

Re: Class Census: Warlocks fading out

Just at looking at the data on my server I would say it is very accurate, and sad to consider the low percentage of warlocks.

I rolled a DK when I hit 55 and got it to 71 (where it still sits), but bordem set in very quickly! As my lock becomes more and more fun over time

DK was my first 80 actually. But as soon as I started raiding I said "omg, how good would affliction be on these bosses?" and then proceeded to level the warlock maintaining her as main.

clearly you've never tried to do good pvp as a warrior... at least a warlock doesn't have to randomly switch stances and equip/unequip a shield to access various spells and what not. you really have to learn your entire spellbook as a warrior and then find a way to access any one of those things in a matter of 1-2 seconds or else you're toast.

however as a whole i do agree that it takes a good amount of skill to play the class correctly in any aspect and i imagine there are many people who would rather go with an easier class if it puts out equal (or higher) numbers. for example.. the 3 button mage :p
