Vent: Why do people take it SO seriously?

I mean, really, WoW is just a video game for crying out loud. I understand the desire to improve your virtual character, get the shiniest new virtual gear, and such. But at the end of the day, this is just a video game. As I have stated in the past, nobody outside of WoW cares whatsoever what level your Pally is and how many purples he wears.

This is not meant to offend those of you (not just Den members, but all players of WoW) whom spend hours upon hours of theorycrafting, loot ranking, and such, so please don't misunderstand me.

I am just wondering why people sometimes act like WoW (and other mmo's I suppose) are their life, and nothing else matters?

I have seen so many arguments about casual vs. hardcore, and why casual players don't deserve certain gear, blahblahblahblah....

People it is just a game, nothing more and nothing less. I try not to judge people for their choices, but seriously?? Calling someone a n00b or l2play is tiresome, especially after 5 years of the game being released.

This is not in response to anything in the Den, just something I have been thinking about for a while now, and sometimes it makes me just want to walk away from the game permanently. Before someone tells me "to just /WoW quit and stop QQ, understand that I have done so a few times but still enjoy the game enough to keep playing...for now. I am entitled to my opinion, if someone doesn't like it they can go back to hardcore raiding and theorycrafting and leave my /rant thread alone.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Den activities.

Re: Vent: Why do people take it SO seriously?

it's a hobby. Like with many other hobbies, there are people who take it very serious, and those who care less about it. There's nothing wrong with that in principle.

The rest.... well, there are always idiots around in the world, why should there be none in WOW? Sad but true...

I agree whit the fact that its just a game and that should not view it as your life or whatever... but imo there is nothing wrong whit taking it serious, if that makes it more fun for people. I personally find it more fun to take it serious then to walk around and do some stupid quest or other pointless stuff. And whit taking it serious I dont mean calling people noobs, I mean improving gear, spent money and time in outputting as mush dps as possible and do research. Also, since all serious raiders should spent that more time in researching I think its not weird they would like to get certain gear that casuals cant get.

Well yeah, if WoW is the only thing in a person's life that brings them any meaning, if they are at the point where they take it SO seriously that they are a constant ball of angry nerves calling everyone n00bs when they make a simple mistake, then maybe they need to take a break.

However, if a person puts some time and effort into raiding and takes it as seriously as any other casual hobby a person might have, then I can understand why they'll get pissed off at the guy who doesn't take it seriously messing things up for everyone else.

Imagine you play a game of pick up basketball every Friday, and the people who show up to so to have a good time and play a good game of ball. But this week there is some douche who can barely play, who hogs the ball, fouls all the time and might as well not be there. Who wouldn't get a little miffed? Sure it's just a game, but when you're playing something that is a TEAM effort (and that's what WoW is) it's easy to get frustrated by people who don't know what the hell they are doing and don't seem to care about how they're impacting the players around them.

The difference is, using your basketball example, is that the guy playing basketball can be benched, or even can foul out with all of the fouls he is getting. There is no real way to get the idiots out of WoW, thus we are stuck with them.

You can kick them from the raid. You can kick them from your guild. You can let them know you have an issue with them in tells first and then you can call them out in vent if they continue to not listen. Azeroth is full of idiots but it doesn't mean you have to tolerate them.

QFT, but just as in real life, for every idiot you /raid kick or /guild kick, he is replaced with two more. Idiots reproduce like rabbits...

Re: Vent: Why do people take it SO seriously?

Unfortunately, there are some people out there that just have addicting personalities... and have very little going for them, so they use this game, this alternate reality, as a means to validate their worth and existance as a human being. And so they go on and judge people's character by how they play their toon... Which in fact is treating/viewing others as a service rather than autonomous decision makers. Which according to Kantianism, is immortal and unethical (never thought I'd actually use anything from my bioethics class :p). It is sad though really, I've played with a few people like this... But we all have our issues I guess, and if WoW is an escapism from a world you don't like, then to him his own.

Re: Vent: Why do people take it SO seriously?

The only place I notice that most of the annoying people come in droves is BG's...and there isn't much you can do about them there unfortunately...oh how many times I have wished I could kill one of my own faction members in a BG! Something that I have noticed as well is that more often than not the person calling other people "noobs" are in fact some of the poorer players themselves.
