I really fail to see why its so tough to cough up $40 - $50 and pick up Kaspersky IS. Several of the items you mention including their own adverstisments, toolbars and other "helpful" crap. In the case of spyware and viruses an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Macs by itself are a linux based operative system so it's harder um hack. Still i have a friend who's wow account got hacked a couple of weeks ago and he plays on a mac. Just a heads up for people that think they can disregard security stuff over that. Wake up, you own a mac, not fort knox :p security measures come for everybody

OS X is based on BSD, which has its roots in Unix. Linux was pretty much a scratch project, but modeled heavily on Posix (Unix). Both are easy to hack if the user runs as root (admin). Unix security used to be (30 years ago) a big joke. But it's been living out in the dark corners of the net long enough to get a lot more secure. Microsoft, OTOH, didn't get serious about security until '02 or '03 (a mere 5-10 years). Those who do not understand Unix are doomed to reinvent it poorly. |
