Re: Shadowfury

In Wrath of the Lich King, now instacast with 3.0 sec stun. The new version is much better than the BC version. IMO, Shadowfury is the defining ability of a PvP destro lock.

I have modified the commentary from an old post. I think it will be useful to those seeking to learn more about this talent.

Shadowfury is primarily a PvP talent, but is also situationally useful when leveling.

Shadowfury is one of the most versatile spell in the game in that it can be applied in many different roles. It can be used both offensively and defensively. It serves as a long range interrupt as well a de-stealthing tool.

Usage

Damage: At rank 3, Shadowfury is unleashed, causing 612 to 728 Shadow damage and stunning all enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec. The damage on a single target is pretty bad, given the 19.5% +damage coefficient. However, if you can get a few targets under the spell, this becomes much better. The spell can crit. I regularly do about 820ish non crit damage and 1600 or so of crit damage.

Burst damage: Cast time is instant. This means the spell can be effectively use as an instant or in your burst combo.

I have 2 sample combos for you. Unlike many other combos out there, these are actually very easily executed.
1) Shadowfury-->Immolate-->Conflagrate-->Shadowburn. This I look at as a bit wasteful, but it is pretty much an ensured 4k damage in 5 secs.

2) Shadowfury-->Immolate-->Deathcoil-->Incinerate-->Conflagrate-->Shadowburn. Also, press spell lock or seduce when deathcoil effect disspears, this will ensure that a healer will eat every piece of the above combo.

Of course, there are other elaborate combos with seduce, fears, but those are much longer and not so easy to execute in real life situations.

Range and AOE: The range is 30 yards with an 8 yard blast radius. This can improve to 36 yard range and 9.6 yard blast radius with Destructive Reach. Although the range stated is 36 yards, that is actually the centre of your AOE. If you count the blast radius, the far edge of your shadowfury range is actually 40 yards. It also go around corners as you can hit people behind a pillar by using the blast properties of the spell. This is perfect in stunning sneaky healers hiding behind pillars. It allows you to damage people when they have no LOS of you.

Interrupt: The Stun portion of Shadowfury is excellent in interrupting spell cast. Perfect for stopping heals. This spell is also godly in stopping flag caps in AV, AB, and EOTS.

Setup: The most useful aspect of shadowfury is that it allows you to get other spells off. Shadowfury-->Fear, Shadowfury-->Howl of Terror, Shadowfury-->Inferno. Shadowfury-->immolate, Shadowfury -->Chaos Bolt.

Other Usage:

SoC detonation: The most popular usage of shadowfury is often the detonation of seed of corruption. The power to let loose 3-4 SoC at the same time is pretty devastating. Combine with other locks, shadowfury can help you burst through blockades in AV very quickly.

Unstealthing: You can use shadowfury to unstealth rogue/druids. Now, rain of fire and hellfire also works. However, rain of fire is not instant. Hellfire requires you be close to the target, and the mana cost is even higher.

Negative:
The worst thing about shadowfury is its high mana cost, which is 710mana for rank 3. (this can be lowered to 675mana with 5/5 Cataclysm). Cataclysm, fel intellect, improved life tap helps a little, but not much.

The wacky UI for Shadowfury also takes time to get used to. The best way to use it is to bind shadowfury to a mouse button.
