Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

Utgarde Keep

Among the cliffs of the Daggercap Bay in the Howling Fjord stands Utgarde Keep, an impervious fortress occupied by the savage and enigmatic vrykul. The ancient stronghold stretches deep into the earth, but thus far no scout from the Alliance or Horde has survived long enough to explore its depths. Long thought to be abandoned, Utgarde has only recently returned to occupation after millennia of disuse. Now the half-giant vrykul pour endlessly from within the keep's battle-scarred walls to assault the nearby settlements.

Fanatically loyal to the still-slumbering King Ymiron, the vrykul seem to live for the thrill of battle. Inside Utgarde, the vicious Dragonflayer clan builds massive weapons of war in ever-burning forges. All of Ingvar's raiders possess tremendous strength and stamina, and a few have also learned to master the arcane arts. Most vrykul magic seems to draw from mysterious runes that even the most experienced magi find unfamiliar. These rune-casters are among the deadliest of all the vrykul, possessing the power to freeze their foes in solid ice and shatter them into a thousand jagged shards.

Although rumors persist that the followers of Ymiron may have allied with the Scourge, the denizens of the Howling Fjord have all seen the Dragonflayers' most common allies: proto-dragons. These bestial creatures seem to have little in common with their better-known brethren in the five dragonflights. Nevertheless, the vrykul have trained the fearsome proto-dragons to serve as mounts. Under the command of Ingvar the Plunderer, the dragon riders revel in slaughtering their enemies from above without warning.

Even as the brutal vrykul strive to conquer the surface of Northrend, they have begun expanding beneath the Howling Fjord as well. Because the servants of Ymiron consider manual labor to be a lowly endeavor, the brave adventurers of the fjord speculate that the vrykul must be tapping some outside source to carry out the work....

With mysterious, foul magic and proto-dragons at their command, the vrykul of Utgarde Keep pose an imminent threat to both the Alliance and the Horde. Only the bravest would dare to strike against Ymiron's faithful and delve into the heart of the vrykul's primeval home. ~ Blizzard

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

Ran this twice today with a guild group. Blew through it in under 1/2 hour both times. T5-T6 geared, but not Sunwell level.

Prince Keleseth
Ice Blocks one member of the group for 20 sec, and it can be the tank. 4 non-elite adds come out. 2 seeds and they go bye bye. Boss may resurrect the adds. No biggie.

Skarvald the Constructor (accompanied by Dalronn the Controller)
Probably the hardest boss in the firs two instances. Two mobs, 1 caster, 1 melee. If one dies before the other, the remaining boss will create a black spirit of the deceased. The spirit will not be targetable, cannot be killed, and has the same abilities it did when it was alive. Not a bug, designed that way. Melee will random charge someone. He hurts. Caster does shadow bolts about 2500-3000. Don't forget to SS your healer like I did. We killed caster first. They are not that hard, but the melee can kill a clothie pretty quick.

Ingvar the Plunderer (with Annhylde the Caller)
Wimp. You get to kill him twice. Make sure the tank faces him away from everyone else. You do that, he's cake.

Granted my group outgears the place, and had run it on Beta, but it was really easy. Trash can be AOE'd in a lot of places.

Oh, and damn if I didn't get lost TWICE leaving this place. All the instances I ran today have back doors/easy ways out so you don't have to run thru the whole thing. Its once I'm out of the instance, you can easily run into an Alliance camp if you take the wrong exit from UK.

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

Agree this is relatively easy - I have mainly Tier 4 gear and have breezed through a few times. Lots of multiple pulls, my best experience has been with pally tank.

Good advice from Barkle - plenty of opportunity for SoC on trash, first boss easy. On second I have done it two different ways, burn caster first or treat like Romeo and Juliet in Kara and try to kill at roughly the same time. I don't think the second approach is needed, maybe for less geared groups.

Third boss - watch the cleave, get your tank to turn him. As noted, you kill him once, he resses, you kill him again.

On way out - the quick way involves leaving last boss the way you have come and jumping down a shaft into water, following the passage, jumping down another shaft, running along a waterfilled passage and you are out.

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

Our small, casual guild has run it twice. Warrior/Rogue/Priest/Shammy/Warlock each time, level 70 the first time, then as 71s. I've got some Kara gear, along with the better quest/crafted/BG gear from CanadianPimp's outstanding gear guide. The Warrior (my wife) has similar gear, the rest in Kara/Arena gear.

We had no real problems except in a few mass pulls, since we are short on CC. The Constructor/Controller fight we did like Romeo & Juliet, burning the Constructor to 10k Health and then slamming the Controller down. My DOTs take the Constructor down the rest of the way and he dies shortly before the Controller. Once he came back as the shade and hit our Priest, but she survived the 1 hit he got.

The last boss is easy if you tank him as mentioned above.

Gear drops have been either used for (future) off specs or sharded by me for the guild bank.

We should hit the Nexus this week for a few runs. As an aside, there's not a lot of tanking gear in the first few instances or in quests - my wife is ticked off at Blizzard.

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

I ran this on my 69 unholy DK last night for the first time, with my druid buddy healing (I was just dps, not tank). I'm not gonna go into any strategies or anything, just wanted to say how impressed i was with the visual quality of the place. This was my first venture into wrath content, and it was amazing. I was summoned to the instance so i didn't get to see any of HF til afterward, but Bliz has really stepped it up in the visual department. And the instance was lots of fun as well. Got my new axe on the first run

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

As a paladin tank I love this place. Pull a bunch of mobs, AoE, pull more mobs, check healer mana, repeat. Actually, most of the ones I have done so far are like that.

Sorry to side-track this thread but I wanted to respond to this.

Tell your wife that there are two nice tanking pieces from Nexus quests - boots and shoulder. There is also a nice tanking ring from the last boss of Azjol-Nerub, though he refuses to drop it for me.

Generally the tanking drops don't start until 77+ instances. Violet Hold has 3 nice pieces and is probably doable at 75.

One thing your wife may consider doing if she has the extra coin is looking into the BS crafted Cobalt set which is available at 70/71. I'm not sure what gear she has but some pieces may be upgrades.

Also at 74 make sure she goes and does Wanted: Ragemane's Flipper - Quest - World of Warcraft which has a choice of several nice tanking weapons.

Now back to your regularly scheduled topic!

Re: Utgarde Keep Instance Overview

Just a note on Ingravar, his second form has some big AoE and interrupts the tank and healer need to take [most] note of, and melee DPS as well. If you're coming up the ranks w/o groovy BC gear Ingravar can be a bit more of a challenge than expected.

Another note - Ingvar's roars! Staggering Roar and Dreadful Roar will only silence if you are casting a spell that has a cast time. Probably more handy to know if you're a healer - as a lock hopefully it only locks out one school of magic - but if you spot him casting either 'roar' may as well cancel any spellcasting you were thinking of doing.
