Speculation Thread

The fortified entrance to Icecrown Citadel is found in the mountains of southern Icecrown. It is surrounded by gigantic ramparts and massive, blade-like spires, the towers are an imposing landmark of the Icecrown skyline, emitting a beacon of light from its pinacle.

As noted earlier the Citadel itself stretches far under Icecrown and Icecrown Glacier, and the rift. The Frozen Throne itself was located on an island in the rift of the glacier towering above most of the underground Citadel.

Icecrown Citadel will be home to the final encounter in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, featuring the Lich King as the final boss, though it is still unknown if he is going to be killable or not. Although players will interact with Arthas numerous times during the expansion, including during an event at Angrathar the Wrath Gate in the Dragonblight, the instance where the final battle against him will take place is not expected to open until some time after the expansion's release. The developers have stated that they feel it was a mistake to release Black Temple, wherein the Illidan encounter takes place, as soon as they did; while this was somewhat remedied with the release of Sunwell Plateau, making Kil'jaeden the final boss encounter of The Burning Crusade, their goal is to ensure that Arthas does not become just another farm boss too soon before newer, more challenging content is released.

Short version: Is to be released in the final major patch of the expansion pack.

Putting this thread up for those wanting to discuss and share thoughts on the instance/boss encounter.

Re: Speculation Thread

I would definitly expect sindragosa and the lich king to make an appearance.

LK speculation:
how I would deal with the Lich King encounter
at least two main phases:

corporeal phase: Arthas the Lich king is "alive".
Every 20 seconds one player dies, not the current threat holder. something like "frostmourne hungers" and a random player dies. P1 has a hard timer of 500 seconds.
Ice gorge: bit like a void zone but frost damage
other abilities...

Transfer to P2- HL tirion Fordring halts the fight, resurrecting all those who fell. Following NPCs assist the raid:

Sylvanas, Darion Mograine, Varian Wrynn, Grommash hellscream, Lady Jaina Proudmoore, Tirion Fordring...

ethereal phase: The shell of the Lich King is destroyed, and the Fight turns into a battle with Ner'zhul's spirit.
Nerzhul possesses one NPC every 60 seconds, so the help is reduced each minute, putting an hard Time limit on P2 of 6 minutes At 360 seconds into P2 the encouter needs to be beaten, otherwise it needs to be restarted. The presence of each NPC buffs the raid:

Sylvanas: Buffs the raids ranged damage by 60%

Darion Mograine: Buffs the raids melee damage by 40% and increases the raids rage, runic power, energy generation by 100%

Jaina Proudmoore: Buffs the raids Magical damage by 40% and restores 5% max mana every 3 seconds

Varian increases the raids critical strike chance by 40%

hellscream restores health by 3000 per second.

Tirions presence (ie the ashbringer's presence) weakens Nerzhul making him vulnerable to damage (if tirion dies nerzhul cannot be damaged, and the encounter ends)

Every 60 seconds one of the NPCs becomes possessed by Nerzhul, and the raid needs to burn them down ASAP because the NPC turns itself on the raid. This cannot be Tirion Fordring if there are other NPCs alive.

Sylvanas+jaina need tanking by ranged classes-sylvanas sets traps in area around her to 15 yd range, stunning those within 5 yd range and dealing damage when activated. Proudmoore casts acrane explosions knocking back to 20 yds range if a player comes within 15 yards.

Hellscream cleaves (what else?), cleave chains like magtheridon+vael

Mograine casts a D&D dealing 15% max HP per second over 10 seconds, random location, death grips random players and attacks them for up to 5 seconds, can be taunted (and must be if that player is to survive)

Varian charges the raid, if nobody taunts him (any taunting move will suffice) within 5 seconds he casts bladestorm and moves through the raid, needs bringing back to the MT by a pick-up tank
+large amounts of raid damage, not causing spell pushback.

If the raid beats Nerzhul within 360 seconds of engaging P2 Fordring will resurrect all fallen NPCs and allow the raid access to the treasury of the Silver Order, which contains the loot. If the raid fails to beat Nerzhul within 360 seconds the encounter fails, the raid takes 1000000 damage, this damage pierces any immunity effects other than divine intervention, and hits any unit in the combat area, even vanished and invisible players, and the encounter cannot be restarted for 5 minutes.

Tirion gives Mograine the Title "The Ashbringer", and allows him to wield the true Ashbringer.

any suggestions?

Re: Speculation Thread

The only problem I can see is that it is waaaay to random.

In P1 where a random player dies, if all your healers go down its a wipe right there no matter how skilled the raid is. You have no control over your wipe which I think will just infuriate raiders.

The same with P2, if the 2 damage buffers get lost first then the raid is unlikely to beat the enrage timer to down him.

So in order to down him you will have to be very lucky to get the RNG on your side which just wont be fun.

Otherwise nice ideas

Re: Speculation Thread

wow that sounds like one hell of a fight Derz, like the idea of the alive phase and the nerzhul phase, even i the random death seems a little un-realistic. i think very likely there will be a gtfo aoe and a aoe fear of some sort, i think there will be some DK like abilities, mabey he heals from atacks.

found this post on wowhead too wich was interesting reading

Re: Speculation Thread

yeah, maybe have a certain "death queue".
This is my take on the Lich King fight.

Corporeal Phase: Arthas the Lich king is "alive".
Every 20 seconds one player dies, not the current threat holder. something like "Frostmourne Hungers" and a random player dies. Soul consume is announced by the application of a "Soul Withdrawal" debuff that lasts 10 seconds, increasing spell cast time by 100% and the cost of melee attacks by 100%.The players have a 30 second timer on resurrection through soulstone, battle rezz, ankh, and can be protected with Guardian Spirit.

P1 has a hard timer of 500 seconds.
Other boss abilities:
Ice gorge: bit like a void zone but frost damage
Scourge strike, plague strike. work like the standard deathknight abilities, but diseases on the aggro holder need to go immediately.

NPCs deaths occur in the following order: Sylanas, Hellscream, Varian, Mograine, Proudmoore, Fordring.

Taking the randomness out a little, and allowing the raid to react in time to soul consume.

heck, maybe I'll just make a new category on my blog for raidboss speculation. perhaps blizz will give me a job if they read it :>

Re: Speculation Thread

Nice.

Although I think any Arthas encounter will include an Animate Dead/Army of the Dead type ability. This was Death Knight Arthas's signature ability in Warcraft 3, and Blizzard has shown a penchant for staying true to Warcraft 3 hero abilites, at least in spirit.

Perhaps Arthas will kill some of the raid, then after a time raise them as his undead minions, or anytime a player died they would be immediatly be raised as such. Then these minions would have to be killed or somehow controlled or after a time Arthas would sacrifice them for a massive heal on himself, a la Death Pact, another signature Arthas ability from WC3. Either way I think raised undead minions will have to play a large part in any Arthas encounter.

From a purely lore standpoint, do you think Jaina/Players/Tirion will be able to "redeem" Arthas's soul, or do you think he will die forever corrupted by Ner'Zhul?

Here's speculation:

Every boss in Ulduar will have no less than 50 million HP.

So Affliction locks and Rogues can kick the living crap out of everybody on the meters like they should.

ONE CAN HOPE!!!!!!
