Razorscale

Razorscale
is another one of the “optional” bosses that opens up after you have killed the Flame Leviathan. Based on the names from some of the loot, it appears that Razorscale is actually the result of Loken's plans for Thorin's mount, Veranus. (If you've completed the Sons of Hodir / Thorin questline in Storm Peaks, you'll know what this is about) Razorscale is an armoured proto-drake who flies around Razorscales Aerie, across from Ignis at the Colossal Forge.

Hard Mode
There is currently no hard mode associated with Razorscale.

General Information
As with XT002 Deconstructor and Ignis, there is no trash to clear on the lead up to Razorscale once you've beaten the Flame Leviathan. However, there is trash which spawns as part of the encounter. When you reach the aerie, you will find some expedition dwarves who need help to get in there. Clear the area of dark iron dwarves, and they will begin to repair the harpoon guns which are around the edge of the aerie.

The fight itself consists of two phases, an air phase and a ground phase. Initially, Razorscale will be flying, but as the expedition dwarves repair the harpoon guns, players can click on them to bring Razorscale closer to the ground, until eventually she is grounded for a period of time.

Razorscale
The aerie is a mostly circular area, with Razorscale initially flying above, and harpoons arranged in a semi-circle around the middle area. In the flying phase, Razorscale has two abilities. When grounded, Razorscale uses two different abilities. During the last 50%, Razorscale is permanently grounded, and adds two additional abilities to the grounded abilities. There is a hard enrage at 10 minutes.

Razorscale has approximately 4 million hitpoints in normal mode, and 12 million in heroic mode.Abilities – Normal Mode

Air Abilities

  • Fireball - Inflicts fire damage to an enemy. Deals 8,788-10,012 fire damage. Only used in phase 1.
  • Devouring Flame - Spits a Lava Bomb at a player, inflicting 6013 to 6987 Fire damage and deals 6013 to 6987 Fire damage every second to anyone staying within 6 yards of the explosion. This effect lasts for 25 secs.
Grounded Abilities
  • Wing Buffet - Knocks back players in a 35 yards radius around the caster. 1.5 cast.
  • Flame Breath - Inflicts 13125 to 16875 Fire damage to players in a cone in front of the caster. 2.5 cast.
Permanently Grounded Abilities (in addition to the normal grounded abilities)
  • Flame Buffet - Increases the Fire damage a player takes by 1000 for 1 min. Stacks up to 99 times.
  • Fuse Armor - Reduces the armor, attack and movement speed of an enemy by 20% for 20 sec. Stacks up to 5 times. 5 stacks will render the tank unable to act.
Abilities – Heroic Mode
Air Abilities

Once the encounter has been started, in order for the dwarves to begin repairing the harpoon guns the dark iron dwarves infesting the area must be cleared first. Throughout the air phase of the fight, these iron dwarves will randomly come up in the little mole man tunnellers. There are three types of iron dwarves that you will need to deal with. You will not always have all three types come up.

Iron Dwarves
Dark Rune Sentinels
Hitpoints: 390k
The Sentinels are the most dangerous of the iron dwarves. They will one-shot most non tanks that get caught in their whirlwind ability. It is generally recommended to have your ranged DPS take these guys down.
Abilities

  • Whirlwind – Approximately 9k damage on tanks, 30-40k on cloth.
Dark Rune Watchers
Hitpoints: 220k
The watchers can be CC'd, including polymorph and hex, and their spells can be interrupted as well. Lightning bolt can be grounded with a totem, but chain lightning can't be. So long as you can reliably interrupt the chain lightning, melee are good for taking these guys down. Curse of tongues, slow, and mind numbing poison are all very useful to help reduce the damage from these dwarves.
Abilities – Normal Mode

  • Melee for ~10k
  • Lightning Bolt - single target nature damage, deals 5950 to 8050.
  • Chain Lightning - Strikes an enemy with a lightning bolt that arcs to another nearby enemy. The spell affects up to 5 targets, inflicting greater Nature damage to each successive target. Damage done is 6938 to 8062
Abilities – Heroic Mode
  • Melee for ~10k
  • Lightning Bolt - single target nature damage, deals 8075 to 10925.
  • Chain Lightning - Strikes an enemy with a lightning bolt that arcs to another nearby enemy. The spell affects up to 5 targets, inflicting greater Nature damage to each successive target. Damage done is 10638 to 12362
Dark Rune Guardians
Hitpoints: 270k
While not as deadly as the other two dwarves, these must still be controlled. Their Stormstrike debuff in particular should be dispelled as soon as it is applied, as it makes the Watcher's lightning and chain lightning abilities extremely dangerous.
Abilities

  • Melee for ~ 7-8k
  • Stormstrike - Instantly attack with both weapons. In addition, the next 2 sources of Nature damage dealt to the target are increased by 20%. Lasts 12 sec.
Strategy

Suggested Raid Composition:

Normal Mode:

  • 2 tanks (one main tank, one off tank( to pick up the adds)
  • 2-3 healers
  • 5-6 DPS
Heroic Mode:
  • 3-4 tanks. (one main tank, two/three off tanks for the adds)
  • 6 healers. More than six healers may well gimp your raid damage too much, but less healers may not be enough, certainly when learning the fight
  • Fill the rest with DPS.
Once the encounter has been started, you must clear the Iron Dwarves that are currently on the platform. After that is done, the Expedition dwarves will move in and begin repairing the harpoon guns. As long as Razorscale is airborne, she will be casting fireball and devouring flame. It is important to notice the difference between the appearance of these two abilities. Devouring Flame looks the same as the frost breath from Sapphiron, whereas the Fireball looks like a Frostfire bolt. If you see the a Devouring Flame coming towards you, then move away to avoid the area where it will hit. If you see a fireball don't both moving because it will always hit whoever it is targetted at. Another point with regards to the fireballs is that they are not exactly random. If a player is standing too close to the harpoon guns, they will be repeatedly targetted for fireball attacks. Keeping your distance from the guns until you're ready to trigger them is important, as it will help to spread the raid healing around.

While you're dodging the Fireballs and Devouring Flame, Iron Dwarves will be coming up in the little mole man tunnellers. The watchers and guardians will come from the left and the right side. If you are going to get Sentinels, they will come from an extra drill that comes up at the rear of the circle. This is important to be aware of, as the Sentinels will destroy any non-tanks that they get in Whirlwind range of. Once your raid has noted the point it comes up, they need to remain aware of it and move away should the Sentinels spawn.

If you have the AoE ability in your raid makeup, the simplest way to deal with all the adds is for the tanks to round them up, bring them to the center of the circle, then AoE them down. If you aren't able to do that, then have any Sentinels tanked away from the rest of the raid, with the ranged DPS killing them. CC or otherwise lock down the casting on the guardians, and take them out next, followed by the Guardians.

If you still have adds up when the final harpoon is ready to trigger Razorscale's ground phase, you have two ways to handle it. You can delay the triggering of the harpoon until all adds have been dealt with, or you can trigger the ground phase and then pull the mobs into the path of the flame breath, as it will damage both players and mobs that are caught in it. When the ground phase is triggered, no Iron Dwarf adds will spawn until Razorscale is back in the air.

For the first 50% of the encounter, when Razorscale is on the ground she is stunned, and there is no need to tank her. Due to the hard enrage, it is important that DPS maximise their time on her during this phase as it will only last for 30 seconds, at which point she will cast Flame Breath, destroying the turrents holding her to the ground, and rising into the air. (If you're holding adds in readiness to take damage from this, then be aware of your positioning) Adds will begin respawning and she will begin casting Devouring Flame and Fireball at your raid. Due to the hard enrage, if you do not trigger the 50% ground phase after three of these ground phases, you will probably wipe. Ideally, you should trigger the second phase after while Razorscale is on the ground for the second time.

Once Razorscale reaches 50% hitpoints, she will land permanently, and at this point she must be tanked. Treat her like a standard dragon fight. (don't stand at front or behind, melee DPS should be at the side) The Iron Dwarf adds will also stop spawning, so your raid can just focus on Razorscale. Any remaining adds will need to be killed off ASAP at this point. In many ways, this may be the most dangerous part of the encounter, as the main tank will be taking Razorscale's damage, and the off tank(s) will be taking a damage from the remaining adds, requiring your healers to split their focus three ways.

When tanking Razorscale, your tanks will need to switch around regularly, as the Fuse Armour and Flame Buffet stacks will end up one-shotting tanks. It is recommended to switch at two or three stacks of the fuse armour. Razorscale will continue to cast Devouring Flame during this phase, the only difference being that it is melee range only.

This phase is just a DPS race, to kill her before she kills your tanks. (the one minute duration on Flame Buffet means that it will not fade before your tanks need to switch again) Due to the fact that your tanks will be taking damage from the Devouring Flame effect all the time, slowly kiting her around the edge of the circle will help to minimise the extra damage your tanks will be taking. Ranged DPS should stand in the middle of the circle, with melee at her inner side.

There are reports that she may still cast Fireball at a ranged DPS while in this phase, which may be due to a ranged DPS making it into her frontal cone as she is being kited around.

Warlock Role
There's limited scope for Warlocks to perform any special roles in this fight. Probably the most important is to quickly drop a Curse of Tongues on the Watchers. If you are talented for it, Shadowfury will come in extremely handy against any of the adds.

Due to the Devouring Flame ground effect, Warlocks using their pet will need to be very aware of where they are, as your pets can very quickly die if they're standing in it.
Tips
  • Warlocks are great for triggering the harpoons. Place your Demonic Circle behind the harpoons, and when the required number are ready (2 in normal, or 4 in heroic) use the teleport and trigger them all.

re: Razorscale - Boss Strat

well we downed him today :D anw as a lock with dual spec, my main spec is 0/37/34 which imo is the best when everything procs! and my other spec is my pvp spec 57/14/0! anw for this boss, to survive means more than dps!! so i turned into my pvp spec ! with demon armor on, i healed myself like druids' hots! it was insane, casting corruption on all adds and haunting one and then drain life surely is the best thing to do on this boss! and its actually more fun :D gdluck guys with ulduar, locks r the best class in there ;)
this is the pvp spec link:

Razorscale kill (pre hot fix) so 6 min enrage

Warlock PoV

razorscale.wmv Download File on FileFront

really fun fight my spec is 0/40/31 i do make a fair few mistakes as its my first time doing the soulsfire weave on a boss and i have no notification when the boss is below 35% but was a good kill and nice a smooth.

The tactic we used in the video explained for all:

Phase 1:

We used 3 tanks for the kill. 2 tanks on the adds that spawn every time and the 3rd tank is for the larger single mob that occasionly spawns we had him kited away from the raid due to whirlwind and he was single targeted by the ranged and the other adds were just AoE'd down fairly fast. You do need to stay spread out as some of the adds cast a chain lightning although it can be interupted quite easily.

The Blue flame that gets put on the raid ticks quite hard if you stay in it too long so you must move out of it very fast. the other attack looks similar to a mages frost fire bolt and hits for approx 10k and is random so can hit the same person very quickly.

As you can see from the video the way we handle the harpoons is to fire the frist 3 when ready and then wait untill the adds are almost dead before firing the 4th harpoon, although the adds can be off tanked if needed as in phase 1 when razorscale is on the ground no tanking is required.

Phase 2:

This is a fairly simple spank and tank with a few simple added features.

Razorscale still casts the blue fire of the raid but only in melee range so the tank has to move her accordingly and melee must watch out not to get too close to it. The tank must keep razorscale facing away from the raid due to the flame breath she does also.

There is a stacking debuff put on the raid which increases damage taken from fire so if your getting a few stacks of this be wary of both the fire balls and the blue fire she does.

There is a stack debuff on the MT so after a few stacks the 2nd tank must taunt and take over as too many will cause the MT to become stunned (you see it happen in the video)

The fight is nice and simple and with a 10 min enrage timer now it should be a nice easy kill once your raid get used to moving from fire and the DPS gets sorted out.

hoped it helped with the video

re: Razorscale - Boss Strat

Our guild got this guy(?) down tonight (10 man)... a few things we noticed that may be useful...

Phase 1 is significantly harder than phase 2 (ground phase) - the adds can quickly overwhelm your raid if you spread yourselves too thin. After trying many different strategies (splitting into 2 groups, gathering mobs and AOE), the best approach seems to be having one tank gather 2 adds at a time while the other tank watches the healers (they get agro very quickly on the adds - this caused many wipes). By nuking the adds down 2 at a time we could get them down much quicker than spreading out and trying to take 4-5 at once.

Priority on adds is:
Sentinals (The whirlwind can easily kill naxx geared tanks)
Watchers (Chain lightning...hurts)
Guardians (We didn't have any problems with these)

On top of the adds your raid will be taking damage from fire bolts as well as a big blue-flame AOE - this is easy to avoid and should be at all costs (more than 4-5 seconds in one and your toast!)

We used the harpoons ASAP and managed to survive through the ground / breath part 3 times - I've heard its easier if you can get it down to 50% in 2 though...

Once you get razor 'grounded' the MT picks him up and pulls him away from the raid while the OT and DPS focus on getting all remaining adds down ASAP. This is the critical part of the fight - the OT will be taking lots of damage from remaining adds so you need to nuke them down very quickly.

Thankfully, once the adds are down the rest of the fight is pretty much tank and spank. The only thing you really need to worry about is the flame breath but this should be pretty easy to avoid.

And finally, a lock specific tip - pet AOE avoidance won't help you here - if your pet is in the blue flames for more than a few seconds it will be dead... I found it best to keep my succy on passive until the boss was safely on the ground.

Hope this is of some use to you, and good luck!

Re: Razorscale - Boss Strat

We activate the harpons once all the four are available (25man).
I use a demonic portal in front of the harpoons in order to get there really fast.

Don't leave your pet on defensive in phase 1, or he will stay dumbly in the center trying to melee the dragon above

Re: Razorscale - Boss Strat

Has anyone one else run into an issue with Doomguard on this fight? I tried it twice and found that if the doomguard passed through the blue smoky AOE he would just stand there regardless of how many times I spammed the "get over here" button.

Someone told me that it was because he was Defensive and he was attempting to melee the blue smoke.. but I've seen this behavior in both defensive (when I left it up by accident) and on passive.

Is this a known bug?

If you stick him on razor, pathing will make him run to a spot behind where the adds span and just stand there. In one way its good because he is a decoy for the blue shit :P
