Auriaya

Auriaya is the first boss you will encounter after killing Kologarn. She patrols the observation ring, which is the circular walkway after the Shattered Bridge. To be honest, I'm not really sure what her story is, except that she's in the way and she has to be killed.

Hard Mode
There is currently no hard mode associated with Auriaya.

General Information
After killing Kologarn, proceed over the Shattered Bridge formed by his body. The platform that you come out on overlooks the Observation Ring, where you will see Auriaya patrolling. She doesn't patrol the full circle; only 2/3rds of it. (if the circle was a clock, she goes from 4 to 8 in an anti-clockwise route) She has two Sanctum Sentry with her.

Before you can engage Auriaya, you will need to clear the two sets of trash mobs that are found to the left and right of the area below the Shattered Bridge. These sentries are quite tough; as with many of the tougher Ulduar trash, harder than some Naxx bosses.

Storm Tempered Keeper
Link: Storm Tempered Keeper
Hitpoints: Normal – 800k, Heroic – 2.5 million
Notes: Come in pairs. Can't be tanked more than 50 yards from each other or they gain the Separation Anxiety buff. Periodically drop a Charged Sphere which should be killed before it reaches the other Keeper or else it will buff them with Supercharged, making the fight significantly harder.
Abilities
  • Forked Lightning - Inflicts 8788 to 10212 Nature damage to enemies in a cone in front of the caster.
  • Vengeful Surge - The death of a companion awakens a surge of energy, increasing damage dealt by 100% and attack speed by 50%.
  • Separation Anxiety- Damage dealt increased by 150% while separated from a companion.
Charged Sphere
Link: Charged Sphere
Hitpoints: Normal 50k, Heroic 150k
Notes: Can't be stunned, but can be frozen in place with Frost Nova and DK Chains. Not sure if the slowing effects from shaman Earthbind totem or mage Slow spell worked or not.

Abilities
  • Supercharged - Increases the target's damage done by 60% and causes the target's attacks to cause powerful electrical surges, sacrificing the caster in the process.
  • Storm Wave (AE attack added to the target's melee attack) - Deals 9500 to 10500 Nature damage to all enemies within 18 yards.
The simplest method that we found for tanking them is to have them pulled from where they're standing up to the platform where the stairs down from the Shattered Bridge exit. The circular platform is roughly 40 yards across, so can be used as a good judge for positioning the two mobs away from each other without going too far apart and triggering Separation Anxiety.

DPS the first one, making sure to stop all Charged Spheres from reaching either mob. Once the first mob is down, no more spheres will be spawned, and you can just dps the second one down. Healers should not have any trouble coping with the increased damage output caused by Vengeful Surge so long as they are ready for it. Alternatively, you can DPS them both down to 5%-10% and then finish them both off at the same time. This reduces the healing requirements on the tanks, but will require DPS to be on their toes more in order to stop the Charged Spheres. We found it simpler to just kill them one after the other. If you've made it this far into Ulduar, odds are your tank and healers can cope with the increased damage output from the Vengeful Surge.

Auriaya
When she is first engaged, Auriaya has Sanctum Sentrys with her. (two on normal, four on heroic) Because of the Savage Pounce ability of the sentries, you need to line of sight pull Auriaya.

Hitpoints: Normal - 3 million, Heroic – 16 million
Notes: Auriaya has a 10 minute enrage timer.

Abilities
  • Terrifying Screech -The screech strikes fear into the hearts of all nearby enemies, causing them to flee in horror for 5 sec.
  • Sentinel Blast - A massive blast that inflicts Shadow damage and increases Shadow damage taken by 100% for 3 sec. This effect stacks. Normal 3500 damage . Heroic 6000 damage.
  • Sonic Screech - A Sonic Shockwave that deals Physical damage to all enemies in its path. The Shockwave damge is split between all targets in its path. Normal 60125 to 69875 . Heroic 190000 to 210000.
  • Guardian Swarm - Targets a player to be assaulted by the Guardian Swarm. Summons 10 Swarming Guardian to attack the player. Normal 4500 hitpoints, Heroic 25000 hitpoints
Sanctum Sentry
Hitpoints: Normal – 330k, Heroic - 550k
Notes: Due to their Savage Pounce, it is important to never give them an opportunity to use it. Always taunt from within melee range, and don't let them get in line of sight of any raid members after Auriaya is engaged but still out of melee range.

Abilities
  • Savage Pounce - A savage pounce that inflicts an initial physical damage, and an additional physical damage every 1 sec for 5 sec. Normal 5550 to 6450 up front, and 3700 to 4300 per second. Heroic 7400 to 8600 up front, and 6013 to 6987 per second
  • Rip Flesh - A deadly attack that inflicts physical damage every 2 sec for 20 sec. Stacks up to 100 times. Normal 2313 to 2687 per 2 sec. Heroic 4625 to 5375 per 2 sec.
  • Strength of the Pack - The presence of other members of the pack increases damage done by 50% to all members of the pack within 10 yards.
Feral Defender
Hitpoints: Normal – 200k. Heroic – 600k.
Notes: Relatively low damage but can cause problems at inopportune times when using Feral Rush. Has 9 lives granted by the Feral Essence buff. Each time it resurects itself it loses a stack. The Feral Rush ability will cause it to randomly jump around the raid, making it impossible for the off tank to keep agro on themselves all the time. All they can really do is taunt it back once it's finished jumping around.

Abilities
  • Feral Pounce - The Feral Defender pounces the target stunning them for 4 sec and inflicting Shadow damage every 1 sec. Normal 602 to 698 every 1 second. Heroic 972 to 1128 every 1 second.
  • Feral Rush - Charges an enemy, dealing Shadow damage and interrupting spell cast for 6 sec. Normal 927 to 973. Heroic 2925 to 3075.
  • Feral Essence - Each essence increases the damage dealt by the Feral Defender by 50%. The Feral Defender can revive itself at the cost of one of its Feral Essences.
  • Seeping Feral Essence (spawns when the Feral Defender is killed) - The Seeping Essence of the Feral Defender Inflicts Shadow damage every 1 sec. Normal 6500. Heroic 9000.
Strategy
Suggested Raid Composition
Normal Mode:

  • 2 tanks
  • 2 - 3 healers
  • 5 - 6 DPS
Heroic Mode:
  • 3 - 4 tanks
  • 6 - 7 healers
  • 14 - 16 DPS
Positioning
Positioning is important for this fight, especially during the initial pull, but also throughout the duration of the encounter as well thanks to Auriaya's Sonic Screech. The sonic screech is usually cast not long after a Terrifying Screech, so players need to ensure that they quickly run back to where the tank is in order to stop them from being one-shot. There may be other positioning requirements depending on how your raid chooses to handle the encounter.

The Pull
This fight doesn't really have any phases per se, although people generally split it into two; the pull, and the fight itself. If the pull isn't handled correctly, there is a good chance that it will be an instanct wipe to your raid, due to the Savage Pounce of the sentries. Two of these hitting your tank / off tank will pretty much one-shot them, so it's very important never to let them have line of sight on your tanks or raid members until they're within melee range, and unable to use the ability. There are several methods for agroing Ariaya without being in line of sight.

The walls of the platforms where they curve away from the stairs will work for line of sight, as will hiding around the corners where the large urns are. Wherever you choose to stand, you'll know soon enough if your raid is out of line of sight!

For the pull itself there are several methods. Perhaps the easiest one is to have a shaman drop a totem on the lower level where Auriaya patrols. Given the five minute timer on totems, it doesn't really matter when it's dropped as it will still be up when she paths back. Alternatively, have a DK drop a death and decay on the ground as she comes around, use a hunter to MD onto your tank or drop a trap on the ground, or even a paladin to bubble pull. It is important to note that if you're using a paladin to bubble pull, they MUST drop the bubble as soon as they're out of line of sight. Due to the bubble mechanics, as soon as another player is on her threat list while the bubble is active, she will attack them rather than the tank.

The Fight

Once you have successfully pulled Auriaya using line of sight, your off tank(s) must immediately engage the Sanctum Sentrys. DPS should focus on burning these down as quickly as possible, as they deal quite a bit of damage and if they get loose, they will quite likely wipe your raid. Try to keep them separated as much as possible, as the Strength of the Pack buff they give each other when they're close to each other will increase the difficulty of this stage of the fight.

Auriaya will cast her Terrifying Screech about every 30 seconds. It is very important that you have a way to break this early, as she will immediately begin casting Sentinel Blast after the terrifying screech. This pulses every second for three seconds, and will quickly wipe your raid if she is allowed to get it off. Shaman are probably the best way to protect your raid, with well placed tremor totems. Other alternatives are rotating fear wards, or DPS warriors ready to pop their fear immunities and then interrupt her cast. To be honest, it's pretty unlikely that a 25 man raid won't have at least one shaman, so careful group makeup can pretty much ensure that she'll never get the cast off. 10 man may find it a little more difficult.

During the fight, players should stay bunched up behind the main tank as much as possible. After a Terrifying Screech all players should immediately run back to reposition themselves behind them. This way, whenever Auriaya casts Sonic Screech, the damage will spread across the raid, avoiding a dead tank, and reducing the emergency healing required by your healers.

About one minute into the fight (regardless of whether there are still sentries up or not) Auriaya will summon a Feral Defender. While it does depend on your raid makeup and healers, the simplest way to deal with the Defender is to just leave them up, have an off-tank try to keep agro as much as possible (the Feral Rush will make this difficult) and have the healers simply heal through the splash damage it will cause.

If you're finding it hard to keep up with the healing by using this method, then you can work on killing it each time it spawns. Each time it is killed it reduces the damage of it's melee and special abilities, but it does leave behind a Seeping Feral Essence wherever it died. The essence can pose a real problem for raids, especially if members are feared through it after a Terrifying Screech, as it does a significant about of damage.

There are a few methods that can be used to minimise this risk. When the defender is at low health (5%-10%) have a DK death grip the defender away and ranged should burn the last few percent of it's hitpoints as quickly as possible. Alternatively, the Feral Defender tank can pull it away from the raid when it's low on hitpoints (5%-10%) and have it stunned while the ranged DPS burn it down. This way, the position of the Seeping Feral Essence can be somewhat controlled.

After two or three of the Seeping Essences are on the raid platform, the main tank should pull Auriaya to the next circular platform, reducing the risk of raid members being feared through the essences. It is important that raid members re-position themselves behind the tank as quickly as possible after Auriaya is moved, otherwise a Terrifying Screech or Sonic Screech can cause a significant amount of trouble or even wipe your raid.

Once your raid is used to the effects used, you'll probably find that it has a similar feel to Kologarn. It's very much a repeat the same steps over and over, rather than fights like Iron Council or Razorscale which have significantly differing phases to them.

Tips
  • The pull is perhaps the most dangerous part of the encounter. Keep out of line of sight of the Feral Sentrys until they are within melee range.
  • The pull is easiest performed using a DK to drop death and decay, or a shaman to drop a totem in Auriaya's patrol path.
  • If your raid is up to it, the simplest method of dealing with the Feral Defender is to leave it up and just heal through the damage it causes. This makes the overall raid much easier as there are no Seeping Feral Essences to avoid.
Warlock Role
This is a basic DPS encounter for Warlocks. Avoid any Seeping Feral Essences, interrupt her casting Sentinel Blast if you can.

Tips
  • If you're not killing the defender, place your Demonic Circle at the spot you'll be killing Auriaya. That way, you can quickly and eaily return to the correct spot after a Terrifying Screech.
  • If you are killing the defender, pop a shadow ward just before Auriaya finishes casting Terrifying Screech. That way if you are feard through the Feral Essence, you will take less damage.

As far as locks go in this encounter, save burst damage on the feral spirit until it's in a position you want to kill it, otherwise it'll jump to someone (or MT) and die in a REALLY bad place!

Pop shadow ward just before the fear to minimize the void zone damage if you end up running through it.

That's my 2 cent

It's just easier to closely pay attention as it's hard to predict where the cat will die. The black stuff doesnt one shot you in 10 man, so just get out of it as it forms. Have your tank kite the boss around the ring and deposit the floor death behind the raid- that being said, this is the third easiest fight in the instance.

About the pull. We failed a few times with performing the line of sight pull properly, so we tried something else (25 man). We just send our main tank in to eat all the punches

He's HoT'ed up by all healers, tank blows all cooldowns, healers blow all cooldowns... and he stays alive
We immediately have two off tanks picking up two cats each and burn the cats down.

They nerfed pounce, so this might be viable now. Our guild uses a Priest who gets bopped after pounce by one of our Paladins.

How many times should we kill the Feral Defender?
Leaving it untouched throughout the whole encounter wasn't exactly the brightest idea, except that there were no void zones to deal with.

I haven't tried Auriaya in 25 man, but in 10 man it wasn't difficult to heal through leaving the defender up and not killing it at all. 25 man may be harder, but then again, you have more healers to spread the load as well.

I'm not sure at which level of nerf we did it the first time.

It got nerfed again now, so maybe pounce is not an issue at all anymore

Agreed, we never touch the defender, just take out her initlal adds and burn her down fast. We have yet to run into a problem doing it this way, just be sure your healers are both watching each other in case of a stun/silence.
