Algalon the Observer

Algalon is the penultimate boss in Ulduar. He is only accessible after completing all the hard modes for all the other bosses in Ulduar. Access to the room that Algalon spawns in is gained via a quest series which eventuate in the Celestial Planetarium Key. (or the Heroic version) The quest starts by players completing either “I Choose You, Steelbreaker”, or “I Choose You, Molgeim” on Iron Council. Once that encounter is beaten a single player can loot the Archivum Data Disk, which starts the quest chain. After handing that in, players next need to obtain the Archivum Disks from Thorim, Freya, Hodir, and Mimiron, by finishing each encounter on it's hard mode.

Algalon is an agent of the Titans, designed to review a world for corruption and make a decision on whether the world should be “re-originated” or not. It is perhaps unfortunate that “re-originating” would involve the death of every living thing on Azeroth.

Hard Mode

There is no known hard mode associated with Algalon.

The Fight
There are two phases to the this fight, although there isn't a huge variation to the encounter itself after the transition from phase 1 phase 2. This fight is a test of your entire raid's ability to be alert and perform at their best.
Phase 1
Once Algalon is engaged the room which him (and your raid) is in will be transformed into space. Algalon hits very hard and fast. In Normal mode, roughly 18k main hand / 10k off hand hits, and in Heroic, 27k main hand and 15k off hand. In addition to his considerable melee, he will be casting Quantum Strike on your tank quite regularly. Every 15 seconds, starting from when he is engaged, Algalon will use Phase Punch on the tank. After the fifth stack of Phase Punch, the tank will be phase shifted to an alternate dimension for 10 seconds and the second tank will need to pick Algalon up.

In addition to his Phase Punch, Algalon will summon 4 collapsing stars every 15 seconds. These stars decay 1% health per second, and when they die they will explode, dealing significant raid-wide damage. The death of these stars must be controlled by killing them one at a time before they can collapse on their own. Two stars collapsing at once will be a raid wipe. When the stars are destroyed they leave behind Black Holes. The Collapsing Stars will continue to spawn throughout the fight until Phase 2 starts.

Every 25 seconds, Algalon will cast Cosmic Smash, targetted on a random player. This will summon a red fissure in the ground, which players must immediately move away from. The further from the hole players are, the less damage they will take when the spell finishes casting and a giant meteor is smashed into the ground. On heroic mode, Algalon will summon three meteors, so players will need to make sure that when avoiding one they don't run closer to another.

50 seconds after the fight starts, Algalon will summon in four Living Constellations. These will randonly wander around the room where the raid is, casting Arcane Barrage on whoever is highest on their threat list. If a Living Constallation is / kited pulled into a black hole, they will disappear, taking the black hole with them. Deathknights are an obvious choice to handling them, as they can Death Grip them right in front of the Black Holes. It is important to note that you do not want the player(s) kiting the Living Constellations to enter the Black Holes themselves, as they will be unable to leave again, and die due to the AE damage they will be taking inside.

To top it all off, every 90 seconds Algalon will cast Big Bang. All the raid members except for one need to enter a black hole to avoid being killed. If all players enter the Black Holes, Algalon will have no one on his agro table and cast Ascend to the Heavens, killing everyone in the raid. The Big Bang will kill pretty much anyone who's not blowing all cooldowns to survive, such as a tank, a player under guardian spirit protection, or a dispersed shadow priest. This ability will pierce all immunity effects such as paladin bubbles or mage iceblocks. All players in the Black Holes will be hit with the Black Hole aura, which does a relatively low amount of raid-wide damage. In addition to this damage, there are Dark Matter mobs inside. They don't have any special abilities, but they hit fairly hard, so players should avoid them as best as possible. It is worth noting that at this point, it appears that each Black Hole goes to a separate “dimension”, so ensuring your whole raid goes into the one Black Hole is probably advisable, or at least working designated groups to go in together.

After the Big Bang, players are teleported out of the Black Holes to continue the encounter. Once the raid has managed to take Algalon down to 20%, Phase 2 starts.
Phase 2
When Phase 2 starts, all Black Holes, Living Constellations, and Collapsing Stars will despawn, and Algalon will summon four Black Holes. Every 30 seconds, an Unleashed Dark Matter will spawn from each Black Hole. (four in total) These will hit fairly hard, and need to be picked up by an off-tank. Algalon will continue to use all of his normal abilities during this phase as well, so this stage becomes a bit of a DPS race to get him down before the adds become too much to handle.
Tips
  • Phase 1 – Use the tank who currently has stacks of Phase Punch on them to eat the Big Bang. This way, your off-tank will be able to pick Algalon up and your raid has another 45 seconds before a tank swap is required.
  • Make sure to leave at least one Black Hole up when kiting the Living Constellations into them, otherwise your raid will wipe to the Big Bang.
  • Phase 2 - Swapping tanks at the start of phase 2 is advised, as it will give your raid 45 seconds before the tank is Phase Shifted, which is hopefully enough time to burn Algalon down.
Useful Macros

Warlock Role
There's not a lot of information on this encounter, so there is a distinct lack of tips available. Your feedback is very welcome to fill this section out!

Videos
As always, I recommend viewing the HD videos, as it just makes it much easier to see what's going on.

Apathy 10 man kill. Excellent wide view of the encounter.

10 man Algalon kill. This one is from a healer perspective, which does help to give an overview of the fight.

Ensidia 25 man. Shows the encounter from the view of several characters, although to be honest the main difference in the viewing seems to be the different UI's involved.

Paragon 25 mana Algalon kill (right on the hour mark)

Warlock Loot - 10 Man
Another chest loot; where's the satisfaction in dragging gear from your slain enemy I ask you? Defeating Algalon will spawn a Gift of the Observer, which contains your loot. Algalon's full drop list isn't known at this time, so this isn't a comprehensive list of Warlock loot.
Warlock Loot - 25 Man
Achievements
The achievements are almost the same on both normal and heroic modes. The heroic mode achievements simply append “Heroic:”, and apply to fulfilling the requirements while in heroic mode.
  • Herald of the Titans (Normal mode only) - Defeat Algalon the Observer on Normal Difficulty without anyone in the raid wearing any equipment with an item level higher than 226.
  • He Feeds on Your Tears - Defeat Algalon the Observer without any raid member dying to Algalon at any point during that raid lockout period.
  • Observed - Defeat Algalon the Observer.
  • Supermassive - Defeat Algalon the Observer after closing 3 Black Holes within 10 seconds.

Algalon guide up. It's drawn heavily on the one guide out there that everyone else seems to have, so looking for any feedback from members who've tried this to make it "ours".

Re: Algalon the Observer

Just going to say a ew things about this fight no, will add more when I get the time.

First off can you remove metorite crystal from the loot lists of inerest to us please beacuse simply it isnt, Its the best healing trinket in game at the moment and if you take this over a healer you dont deserve it.

Right on with the fight from warlock PoV.

In my guild the warlocks are on star duty we do this because our damage is more predictable than other classes when killing these stars which helps the healing, We keep killing all the stars we can We usally kill them upto the 3rd big bang cause after we come up after that we are getting close to enrage so shouldnt get another as long as the DPS is fine.

A few other things we take 2 tanks on heroic and 5 healers, the tanks taunt after 2 phase punches for the first taunt then after that the tanks taunt after 3 big bangs, The tank not on the boss is taunting the constelations and closing the black holes Just make sure you have at least one up when the big bang comes . And blow hero at the begining of the fight before the stars and constelations spawn as this untill P2 will be the best time for all out on algalon if not better due to everyone having full mana.

when a big bang comes we usually use a dispersion glyphed and talented shadowpriest to take it for safety but we have CD's ready just incase we cant.

When hes getting close to 20% then ranged check their positions and make sure they are nowhere near the locations where the holes spawn, the best idea for this is to go close to the edge of the platform and all the melee just hug algalon till the holes spawn, at this point no more stars are getting killed due to these holes being up for you, so its all out on algalon.
