Generally the lock doing the pet tanking is running in high end PVP gear with stam chants/gems. This is done to get VW health up as high as possible. You would also want imp health funnel to help mitigate incoming damage.

Just a few suggestions. Not sure if VW is a viable tank after the recent health nerf he took.

Re: Heroic: I choose you Steelbreaker.

Hi Kivutar,

Just to clarify: in the video they don't use a single void walker to tank, they actually use 2.

You will see one that is closer to the door that gets Overload first. Then it dies, and the void walker that had been at the back of Steelbreaker then gets Overload. I believe the VW is being manually sac'ed before the the charge actually blows up the VW tank.

About the technique:

I am not sure of the practicality of that technique now, as I'd have the same concern Majestrix posted, but would be curious if this were still a possibility

I have only done regular mode Steelbreaker achievement, so I cannot say from experience about Heroic yet.

A couple things would make me shy away from the VW technique in that this fight appears to be primarily DPS race. Apart from generally increased damage Steelbreaker puts out after his two friend's are dead, there is a continually increased damage after each tank dies which means you have a limited time to kill him due to the overloads.

Given that dedicating locks to PVP gear, possibly suboptimal spec to buff the voidwalker, and a suboptimal-DPS pet, and that overcharge on a suboptimal DPS pet is still suboptimal-DPS, means that you are somewhat gimping a small chunk of your raid's DPS. If you have real tanks tanking Steelbreaker, you might have to soulstone or rebirth them, but when those real tanks have overload, they'll be adding some real damage and your warlock's will be putting out the normal DPS to put out before too many cycles of Overload having gone passed.

Note that the Forlorn Legacy video was 'filmed' before May 13th (around May 9th I believe?) when a patch went in that made it so if pets die from Overload, the boss still gets his damage and hp buff. Prior to the 13th, if you give up DPS output to have the pet tank was OK because overall, Forlorn Legacy was essentially buying an extra whole minute (2 void walkers) of not buffing the boss more.

Now that advantage is gone as of May 13th so there's less reason to use this trick especially if it gimps your DPS output somewhat compared to buffing a real tank with overload and having you as a Lock outputting your max DPS.

i think that killed off any pet tanking

I don't think this is any less viable than before. If you sac your pet or dismiss it, and allow the second Void to pick it up, the pet never dies from Overwhelming power, thereby negating the heal to Steelbreaker.

Warlock just has to be tight with his timing.

Are you assuming or do you know this for fact since they patched OP to effect pets on death?

The only reason you would really ever want to use the void tank strat now is so you can stack more dps by bringing less tanks. That said, the headaches of your pet getting gibbed over the course of yoru attempts may not be worth the gains.
