Shard of a Infernal/Felhound?

Now, as far as I can tell, the only mention of a Felhound is as a pseudonym for Felhunter, our level 30 pet. Yet at level 35, I visited Ratchet to be given a quest to either follow the path of the Felhound or the Infernal - what gives? Does this mean there's another pet called the Felhound? Does it change my mana/hp regen ability? (based on the quest description)? Will it limit whether or not I can summon the Infernal/Doomguard in the future? Never got this far in OB, brand new territory for me, so any info would be appreciated (I have ~4 or 5 levels before I even touch the quest anyway, it's still red!!)

the felhound is your last regular pet, which you get at level 30 whilst the infernal is your high level pet. however the infernal isnt normal pet since it has to be enslaved using the "enslave demon spell"

No, no, no...this is not a pet quest but an item quest...they are referring to NPC's you have to fight for drops (in Desolace)...Fellhound is a mob that resembles our Felhunter and when they reference the Infernals they mean killing a Lesser Infernal in that same area...following are the quest rewards.

Orb OR the staff you get for taking the path of the fell hound:
Orb: http://wow.allakhazam.com/item.html?witem=15108
Staff: http://wow.allakhazam.com/item.html?witem=15106

taking the path of the infernal:

I forgot who originally gave me the quest but they sent me to the girl who gave the Enchanted Bloodrobe quest...

The first thing she tells you to do is go into the hut behind her and talk to one of her acolytes. One gives you a quest to take out a Fellhound, the other gives you a similar quest to take out an Infernal...

I didn't know there was a difference when I took the quest so I took the infernal one...simply because I thought it more fun to kill an infernal...

So I went to Desolace and we're all familiar with the zone by now from hunting our Enchanted Golden Bloodrobe...I go to Mannoroc Coven (no harping on zone or area spellings please, I don't pay close attention to same that's what maps are for :P) and found an infernal...I let my voidwalker tank it while I lay on the spells (heavy on shadow bolts because he hits hard and is immune to fire) and when he gets low on health I click the orb the acolyte in the hut gave me at which time I begin to channel a spell that looks similar to drain soul...when the Lesser Infernal dies, I get a new item similar to a soul shard but naturally containing an infernal's soul.

Menara also had asked me to kill a warlock in the coven and get his "infernal orb" or somesuch...so I see a human type mob in there with an imp following him around and think "this is the guy"....I pull him and banish his imp...and when he dies he does, indeed, have this orb on his person...

Now we get to the part of the quest I am on...you see, we have to "Cleanse" this orb...Menara had told me to take the orb to a Mage in Duskswallow (?) Marsh (its the zone to the East of the Barrens and way south of Ratchet but before 1k needles) named Tabetha...she is actually located more or less in the center of the zone though the description says she's "deep to the south" (don't go too deep south, by the way, or you'll be surrounded by level 41+ elites and if you're doing this at 36 like me you won't get far...as I found out after a couple deaths).

Now Tabetha says that to cleanse the orb you have to let her summon the demon from within it and you have to kill it (quickly, or it will retreat back into the orb...quickly in this case means within like 3 minutes so we're hardly talking a need to rush things). She leads you outside her cottage and into a field beside it where she summons the demon from within the orb...

I only had time to try this once before I had to log this morning so it may be a different level demon when I try again but when she summoned it, a level 40 demon appeared and suffice it to say that he resisted everything I threw at him (three level difference is hard, I find a four level difference to be nearly impossible to solo) and he made short work of me.

There may be more to the quest but that is what I have encountered so far...A rather fun quest so far though I admit I managed to get my hands on a 25 DPS staff with +8 to int and sta so I'm wondering if I like it enough to bother with...so the only upgrade is the Fire damage bonus and the 3 extra melee dps (though I do admit I enjoy meleeing, hehe!).

Shard of a Infernal/Felhound?

Don't restrict yourself, I've found all pets to be useful in varying situations...

I use the Voidwalker when I'm in a new area with higher level mobs than I'm used to and afraid of adds...

I use the succubus when I am against humanoid mobs and when I don't mind (and in fact relish...which is not uncommon!) being the tank.

I use the Felhunter when I am fighting casters or in a fairly open area and don't expect adds but don't want to be tanking the full duration of the fight (and if you let the FH tank and cast nothing at the mob until it is like at 90% health you will need to cast Searing Pain at least twice to steal aggro...

And I use the Imp when I'm grouped and I anticipate little need for offtanking or crowd control or when I expect some nimrod to wipe us and don't want to "waste" a shard :P

The Felhunter does some pretty good damage and is a decent tank...just because you miss how amazingly powerful he once was is no reason to consider him 'useless'.

a question for the family

what exactly is the difference in the shard of... quests? i am just about the level i want to start them and was wondering if that is a avatar-altering experience for my character.... also, any warlocks on Bleeding Hollow can ask me for assistance in the golden thread robe quest. i so have the pattern and only ask that you try to supply the spider's silks. and we will discuss a fair (to me) price
