It has no purpose. It can't hold aggro from anything a level 80 warlock does. In fact, during levelling it's not good, either.

It doesn't make enough threat. It's melee-mitigation talents are terrible, and it's shield is dispellable and doesn't absorb enough damage. You can't summon another pet without popping a 15 minute CD either (Nemesis and any PVP build utilizing Nemesis is easily countered and CC'd anyway).

It's like Demonic Empowerment and the Succubus and/or Felhunter.

Why? You can't get creative and make use of them without completely giving up the ability to do damage at all.
Yep sounds like the lovable old VW I've always known. Only good use I've ever found for him was saccing him for the health regen while grinding.

A self heal trinket can be nice as are +stam trinkets.

When you are soloing old world dungeons and raids as a level 80 its almost never a dps race. It's an outlasting race. The idea is to have enough stamina for your felguard to absorb the initial damage of multiple mobs or a very tough mob while it builds threat and you put your dots up. Once you have curse of weakness and corruption up healing yourself a felguard that's being healed with improved health funnel and has demonic resilience is very hard to kill and puts out indescribably more threat and damage than the blueberry ever could.

Soloing any single hardhitting boss/elite is easymode this way. Soloing multiple bosses/elites at once is when it gets fun. The 4 big guys at the start of AQ 40 and the Tiger boss in ZG are fun and challenging. You have to constantly target switch the pet to keep aggro on everything, watch buffs/debuffs, and do damage. It's like being a tank, healer, and dps all at once, fun stuff. The stables trash of Kara is quite hard, takes better gear, lots of shards, some creative demo circle ports through walls and lots of practice, but it's doable.
I have been doing a lot of thinking about soloing old stuff that I never finished, or for reputation, or just for fun. My only real question is how do you get inside a place like Kara/MC/AQ/etc. by yourself? Do you start a raid group with someone then they leave once you get inside? I was under the impression that you cannot enter these places without being in a raid group, and you can't be in a raid group by yourself (at least initially).

Create a party with a friend and switch it to raid. Then log off and log on as an alt. Then have your friend invite your alt. Then log off and log back on to your main. Then your friend can leave the raid and you can raid by yourself!

Re: VW nerf has gone too far !

Nerf was pointless, pets were made to be able to tank if specced for it, it other classes can have more than one role in a group allow locks to do the same.

Re: VW nerf has gone too far !

getting back to the VW, im destro and the guild has naxx on farm, On Gluth I love the hunter frost trap and paladin consecrate (sp?) method of kiting but last night we were lacking dps paladin to do this.

hunter on his own wasnt managing it too well a couple got free i tried firing a CB at them and dragging them back to the frost trap but that didnt work too well as i then couldnt shake them off. Also tried planting the imp in the frost trap, still in range of gluth and getting him to pull agro on the chow but he obviously didnt last long so im wondering if the VW could be used for kiting the zombie chow? Im a destro lock with 2 points in damage = pet heal talent (cant remember the name!).

what do you think? gotta be worth a try? Target a chow agro him, target another, etc occasionally drop the AOE agro. Dps gluth to keep him alive maybe transfer a bit of life into him directly occasionally. Is he going to be effected by the debuff that prevents normal tanking too?

Re: VW nerf has gone too far !

Personally I think the HP nerf on the VW is baseless, if it's because he managed to tank Sarth.
People already mentioned this, but the lock was stocked up on +sta gear, gems and enchants in addition to requiring good placement of the VW and no-one was dps'ing it.

Using the VW for level'ing turns it into a slow process, due to it needing time to gain aggro and that the lock himself/herself need to limit their dps in order to avoid aggro.

What the VW is useful for nowadays is for soloing group-quests or arena/BG.
Take "Threat from Above" for instance. As long as you're playing smart with your VW(health funnel'ing, kiting and killing the adds, don't overaggro).

Re: VW nerf has gone too far !

Right.. I agree that VW does have its place.. in some pvp situations and some solo fights or even group fights with no tank. I almost always tank chillmaw with vw. Sure he doesn't hold threat, but then I just hit sacrifice. Thats normally enough. I took no damage and we move on to jousting the commanders.

VW should have more hit points and he should generate more threat. All of our demons need work really.. except maybe the Imp and Felguard.
