Tanking with a Doomguard

With DR removed from enslavement, has anyone tried to master tanking with one? That is, getting/holding the aggro from all pulled MOBs while the rest of the group kills one at a time.

What happens if he breaks in mid-fight, does he lose MOB aggro?

I'm thinking of seeing if I can effectively tank with one in a 5-man without a warrior. Although at a few hours per run I don't know if I could gain enough shards to keep going...

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

I dunno if a doomguard could hold aggro well enough to tank something, and he lacks the defense and armor to be able to take the abuse of something like King Gordok. He has around 5k unbuffed HP, and 3800ish armor (About where a shaman with a 2 hander would be I suppose). Infernal's around 4700ish, with the same HP. Void has 4700ish armor but only around 3500hp.

This mod is absolutely amazing if you like to enslave stuff: http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=2229

Shows the stats of demons you enslave. Doomguard has 90 innate FR! Lord Aztheroc has no resists at all!

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

With Cripple, Warstomp, and Dispel you could tank certain elites, but I'm sure you couldn't get too crazy. With cripple they can tank Twilight Mobs which are easily the toughest non-elite level 60's, but I don't know at what point an Elite Mob would be too much.

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

I was able to use my Doomguard to tank BRD in a 5 man group without any aggro problems and held it without any warriors in the group. I would gather whole groups together and the team would take them out. I would run him in targeting the highest elite stomp and grab the aggro of the 6 or so mobs. Start Rain of Fire and wait until I saw the first string of hits then I would start my Rain of Fire and then tell the group to go in and get all your free hits and have the priest chain heal the Doomguard. We went through BRD so fast without a Warrior it was unbelievable.

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

Nice, I'll have to try that. With a Mage, Doomguard, and Warlock I bet you could smoke MOBs. And come to think of it my Voidwalker tanked Sunken Temple just a week or two ago while I was doing the new Level 50 Quests, so a Doomguard should be fine in BRD, maybe even LBRS. Surely it could handle DM East and maybe West; I've never been to North but doubt it based on what I've heard.

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

Cool, that's right along the lines I figured. That is, BRD maybe LBRS level and below tanking. I'll try it sometime!

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

I was in ZG Sunday night.. at the clearing before Bloodlord someone dared me in a private message to use a Demonic Figurine. I decided not to tell anyone I was going to do it and lo questions on Teamspeak included:

"What the heck is a doom portal?"

I remained silent and watched people click it without hesitation! One member died of course ... suckers!

Can't believe they clicked it!

Anyway I'm SM / Ruin so made sure to have Curse of Shadows on the big guy and took him off to an empty corner now and then to dismiss / re-curse / enslave.

Casting CoS on the boss followed by Cripple actually seemed useful ... there were two or three deaths in the boss fight but we got him first try and really was one of our cleanest kills of Bloodlord Mandokir.

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

Be warned that when you are in a group you will want to restrain from using your doomguard (or turn of the auto-cast of his AE attacks) when there is any form of crowd control!

Be that ice traps, sap, seduced mobs, ETC.

Re: Tanking with a Doomguard

A couple of us decided to try using DGs during a Ragnaros encoutner.

Hah.

Not a good plan, though I still think it has possibilities if executed a little better.

Essentially, it boiled down to mana efficiency as we (DG keepers) spent more time and mana controlling Doomy for the effect (Cripple, mainly) than we would have gotten by just spamming Shadow Bolts.

Shrug.

I am a very disappointed that they are bringing back Diminishing Returns. Sigh.
