Pet Ability question from a Newbie

Just wondering if our pets get their various abilities at different levels. For instance, I'm a level 9 warlock and my imp only has firebolt available to it. I've checked the spellbook under the pet tab and that is all it knows.

You will recieve the phase shift at a later time (think level 12 but I could be wrong). The Pets gain other abilities, and higher ranks which you have to purchase the book from the warlock pet trainer.

Everytime you level up on an even level, (after 10 if I remember right ? ) 10,12,14,etc and go to your trainer for new spells, check the pet trainer standing near by. There you will purchase new spells and upgraded spells for your pets.
