Re: Keeping Pet alive
Imp has laughable hitpoints, the only thing you can do at that level is make sure that you have more aggro then your pet. By that, I mean send in your pet to attack well after you have started attacking, or casting higher damage spells earlier in the fight helps too. Its just gonna take a bit of practise of managing when you want the mob to hit you, and when you want them to hit your pet.

Re: Keeping Pet alive
Its only for 2 levels, but if you send the imp and begin casting immolate at the same time, you will pull agro off the imp fast and the creatures should die pretty fast. I don’t recall exactly what spells you have at that level, but start throwing spells from the get go, and he won’t hold agro enough to take too much damage.

Re: Keeping Pet alive
You might try the triangulation trick - drop him off on one side of your mob while you sidle around. You open the attack then have him bomb away. Sometimes (best!) the mob spins around back and forth, never moving more than a few steps in either direction. Call him back while you're looting.
