MAVRIC’s
Primal Farming Guide

Please note that this is my first attempt at putting together a guild. Below you will find information on locations and mob types that “I found helpful to me in farming Primal’s". Most people are looking for Primal’s to craft epic items and are willing to pay for them. Farming these can be easy but can also be time consuming. My attempt is to help manage the loss of time farming to increase the time playing.

A quick and simple explanation of what “Primal” farming is and what we use them for. I’ll start with what is a Primal. In the beginning Blizzard gave us Essences, but with the expansion brought Mote’s. There are seven different types of Motes, which we turn into primal’s. They are named after all the elements, Air, Earth, Fire, Life, Mana, Shadow, and Water. All Motes can be made into a Primal’s, by right clicking ten Motes of a similar type. Example: Right click a stack of ten motes of Mana and it will turn into a primal of Mana. Now as for why we farm these in the first place. As said above, they are used widely by many of the professions. Tailors, Engineers, and Blacksmiths all seek these to craft “epic” items of value.

Here is a list of my “Best Creatures to Farm”

Type and Location

Mote of Air
  • Nagrand – Storming Wind Ripper, Living Cyclones
  • Shadowmoon Valley - Enraged Air Spirit (Higher Level,Better Drop Rate)
Mote of Earth
  • Nagrand – Enraged Crusher (Lower Level, Lower Drop Rate) Shattered Rumbler (Higher Level, Better Drop Rate)
Mote of Fire
  • Blade's Edge - Searing Elemental (Lower Level, Lower Drop Rate)
  • Shadowmoon Valley - Enraged Fire Spirit (Higher Level, Better Drop Rate)
Mote of Life
  • Zangarmarsh - Withered Giants (Lower Level), Starving Fungal Giants (Higher Level, Best Drop Rate)
Mote of Mana
  • Netherstorm - Mana seeker, Arcane Elementals, Nether Wraith
Mote of Shadow
  • Hellfire Peninsula - Collapsing Voidwalker (Lower Level, Lower Drop Rate)
  • Nagrand – Voidspawn (Higher Drop Rate, run around the big white rock avoid Durn)
  • Netherstorm - Voidshrieker (Just make sure to hit the Voidshrieker with FIRE first (then shadow), because they will gain a 75% resist to the FIRST school of magic that hits them. note: source pugzug
Mote of Water
  • Terokkar Forrest - Shimmerscale Eel (Great drop rate, Heavily Farmed)
  • Nagrand - Lake Spirit (Lower Level, Lower Drop Rate), Lake Surger (Higher level, Better Drop Rate)

Professions

Mining – Fire (Fel Iron Deposit 14.6%) and Earth (Rich Adamantite Deposit 61.2%, Adamantite Deposit 52.2%, Khorium Vein 42.3%, Fel Iron Deposit 12.9%).
TIP: One other way to harvest motes using mining is directly from a rock creature and “skinning” it.

Herbalism – Gather motes of life from various weeds (Mana Thistle 40.5%, Terocone 38.5%, Ancient Lichen 26.2%, Dreaming Glory 33.3%, Felweed 26.3%, Ragevil 34.2%
TIP: As with mining you can “skin” elemental creatures.

Engineering – Extracting motes, uses the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor with goggles equipped and extract motes from gas clouds. Shadowmoon Valley Felmist (Mote of Shadow), Zangarmarsh Swamp Gas – (Mote of Life and Water), Netherstorm Arcane Vortex (Mote of Mana) Nagrand Windy Cloud (Mote of Air)
TIP: Must have the extractor and goggles

Fishing - Fishing for motes of water from pools of pure water. These pools can be found in thru out Nagrand. Pools of pure water contains 2-4 "catches" usually yielding 1 -2 motes of water.
TIP: A minimum fishing skill of 380 is required to cast and an effective skill of 475 to stop fish from getting away is recommended.

Items crafted

There are many, many items that can be crafted using Primal's. From a Warlocks point of view tailoring in my opinion offers the best rewards. The basic material used is cloth. Epic patterns require special cloths. Those are Primal Mooncloth, Spellcloth, and Shadowcloth. These special cloths have a cool down period of 92 hours (3 days, 20 hours). Also important to note that these can only be crafted in special areas. Primal Mooncloth needs to be crafted in a moonwell like the one in The Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh, Shadowcloth in Shadowmoon Valley at the Alter of Shadow, and Spellcloth can be crafted anywhere in Netehrstorm.

Primal Mooncloth can be created by tailors of skill 350. The materials are:

Spellcloth can be created by tailors of skill 350. The materials are:
Shadowcloth can be created by tailors of skill 350. The materials are:

These items once gathered in quianty along with other materials will allow you to craft items like the Shadow's Embrace and Wrath of Spellfire sets. There is also items like the Spellstrike Hood and the Spellstrike Pants.

Tips
  • I highly recommend a flying mount. This will help you both to save time and reach places that otherwise would not be open to you.
  • As stated by many people try and do your farming on “off peak” hours. I find the best time is early in the morning.
  • Make use of an Add-on Like Gatherer
  • In Nagrand be sure to check the floating ledges for gas clouds. Also don't forget to check the Elemental Plateau. Note this is a very heavily farmed area.
  • Every Area in Outland has an area that can only be reached with a flyer. These spots can reward you with great farming or high frustration.
  • Always keep track of your professions cool downs

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

Why isn't fishing on the list to farm primal waters? Assuming Nagrand isn't already fished clean it is the fastest way of getting primals. On a good day I get 3-5 primals in 10-20mins.

Mote of Shadow
  • Netherstorm - Manaforge Ultris, Voidshrieker and Unstable Voidwraith. Just make sure to hit the Voidshrieker with FIRE first (then shadow), because they will gain a 75% resist to the FIRST school of magic that hits them.
Mote of Water
  • Skettis - Surger. Level 71 and 72, so caution is warranted, but just cast underwater breathing and go around the lake. Make sure to heal with drain life and you can continue almost indefinitely.

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

Nice guide. Missed a few, though.

Water: Fishing pools of Pure Water and Pools of fish in Zangarmarsh, Nagrand, and Terrokar; Water Elementals in Shadowmoon around the Coilskar Cistern

Mana: from the arcane constructs on the SSO Isle (low drop rate, and I forget the proper names); from the Phase worms at Bash'ir Landing in Blade's Edge (higher drop rate); Unbound Ethereals in Blade's Edge (mediocre drop rate but not a high number of mobs)

Shadow: Voidwalkers in Netherstorm near Manaforge Ultris

I'd also recommend adding the specific areas of each zone where the elementals could be found.

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

I'd also add this:

Fire - The fire mobs near Doom Lord Kazzak where you do the daily quests have a high drop rate for motes of fire.

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

Fishing was not included because I have no personal insight into this profession. The information I listed is solely what I had farmed personally. Adding mobs I have never farmed would be like writing a guide on raiding but never have been in a raid. I do want to say thanks for pointing some mobs out, I will check these out. Some mobs were not listed because I found them to require more effort to take down then others. My thought is the more mobs you can take down without having to stop to eat drink the better. So I purposely did not include mobs that I found to slow the process down.

Thanks again for the input, thoughts, and praises.

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

I have alchemy and getting primal life is a LOT cheaper just transmuting earth to life. You have to discover the recipe first however.

And from experience I can say the fastest way to get primal water is by far fishing. you get 4-8 motes per node and there's usualy like 3-5 on Elemental Plateau.

Re: MAV's Primal Farming Guide

Thanks Maverick! I found engineering to be awesome for primal farming. I stick with Air in Nagrand. I pick a nice quiet time and can get 10 primals an hour = 300 - 400 gold an hour. Yes please!

A note to Blood Elf Locks: always hit them with a mana tap first. They get Arcane resistance then, freeing you up to unleash Fire and Shadow!

Mote of Mana

* Shadowmoon Valley - Nether Rays

These are great for farming when doing the daily quest from Netherwing that requires 10 Fel Glands that drops from the Rays.
