Patch 3.0.2
Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

Hello all,

Scince the patch I have spent some hours reading on forums and training on target dummies in IF. I have also tried raiding as affliction in Black Temple with the result of topping damage done on several bosses. Standing a little bit lower on dps though. I thought it would be a good idea to share my personal experiences so far with my fellow locks.

Why Affliction

- It's fun
- It seem's to put out the highest total damage on raidbosses compared to other warlock-builds atm.
- It's very self-sustainable when it comes to health and mana.
- Haunt and everlasting Corruption/Shadow Embrace.

Challanges as Affliction

- Spellrotations and refreshing dots in the most efficient way

Conclusions

- We have stepped down a bit on dps but have increased our total damage compared to before.
- Shadow Bolt is still one of our major damage spells

Talentbuild

Talenbuild 56/0/5

Imrproved Life Tap in combination with Haunt is enough to sustain mana. No need for Supression (if you are hit capped) or Dark Pact.

Put points in Frailty and Malediction. If raiding with a Moonkin put CoR. If there is no Moonkin put CoE.

Pet

Use the Felhunter. The Shadow Bit ability gives a boost to damage.

Major Glyphs

- Extended Banish
- Chance to get instant SB from Corruption tics
- Reduced mana cost on SB (Don't find mana to be an issue so this one might be skipped for now)

Spellrotations

Basicly your fighting will be devided into 2 phases;

1. Dotting and refreshing dots
2. Spamming Shadow Bolts

Our priority is to fit in as many SB as possible during #2 while keeping dots up. It's extremly important to keep the Shadow Embrace x2 effect up all the time in order to boost damage as much as possible.

On single trash go SB-Curse-Haunt-Corruption-SB-SB-SB ...
On aoe trash it's Seed of Corruption for the winn.

Macros

In order to tune the spellrotation for maximal damage use the macros bellow. Have two dot refresing macros scince it's only needed to put up Siphon Life every second refreshing. Corruption is only needed to put up in the begining scince it is automaticly refreshed with Haunt. Do this manually. This means;

1. Start with Shadow Bolt and Curse
2. Then use the first dot sequence with Corruption inserted manually after Haunt
3. Start to hit the Shadow Bolt spamming until Corruption needs refreshing
4. Use the second dot sequence
5. Back to Shadow Bolt spamming
6. Use the first dot sequence
7. Back to Shadow Bolt spamming

Repeat 4-7 until target is dead

If an extra Life Tap is needed you can do it during SB phase.

Start Up macro:

/castsequence reset=target/combat Shadow Bolt, Curse of the Elements

Dot refreshing macros:

/castsequence reset=target/combat Haunt, Siphon Life, Unstable Affliction, Life tap

/castsequence reset=target/combat Haunt, Unstable Affliction, Life tap

SB macro:

#showtooltip Shadow Bolt
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/use 13
/use 14
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/script UIErrorsFrame:Show()
/cast Shadow Bolt

CC macro (Banish as an example):

Holding ALT when clicking will change focus lock to new target or remove focus lock if no target

#showtooltip Banish
/clearFocus [target=focus,dead]
/clearFocus [target=focus,noexists]
/clearFocus [modifier:alt]
/focus [modifier:alt] target
/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/cast [target=focus] Banish

Re: Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

Seeing as how your shadowbolts are not going to have the same range tho as a your affliction spells, with grim reach specced. i would spend those 2 points included in grim reach in something else, like the last point of eradication or in improved shadow bolt or cataclysm. Thats my opinion anyway

Re: Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

more then 1 point in erad is wasted, i posted a link before to some maths and I don't think that has changed

i run the following 56/0/5

there's a bit of room for the initial tiers since some of the talents are situational ( ie CoE when you don't have a moonkin so you can't use other curses )

not quite sold on dot macros but hey that's my preference everyone has their own playstyle =p

overall a decent guide

Re: Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

Guess ill be the devil advocate on this one, since everyone before me had this guide highly rated.

Negative points, imo:
- Affliction being the highest damage on boss fights: Highly debatable. I, and at least a few more, have tested and came to the conclusion, old 21/40 is still highest dps we have.
- The talent build. Kinda reductive to only present 1 talent build, as posted before me, it has some flaws. And its hard to track if isb talent points is worse than Malediction (for example).
- Major Banish as a glyph. Do you banish that much? And 5 seconds is enough to save you a recast?
- Finally, the macros: nothing new there that would require a guide. Those have been posted a long time ago.

Positive points, imo:
- Nice presentation
- Good explanation of sequences for new dots

Im no expert in warlocks and this guide gave nothing new. Its well written, well presented but the information contained in it, is old and, in some points, dubious.

Nice guide,

I do have a question though. You do not include Immolate in your rotation. I've read different things regarding Immolate in several places and couldn't find a definitive answer to how it affects your DPS. Do you have any good suggestions/links as to where I might find an answer?

Secondly, although the macro's might be old they are now much more useful and deserve a repost in my opinion. Previously I did not use macros because 1 resist would screw up your entire rotation. Now, since with hit cap you can completely negate the possibility of a resist, this is no longer true and macros have become more usefull.

I would also change the points in grim reach since you will also be shadow bolting often you don't really need them.

Have anyone done any math on the Suppression talent regarding this is worth it due to less gems on spell hit and more gems on spell dam ?

That would depend on how much spell hit you have. Personally i have more than i need, without any hit rating gem. So the hit talents are useless (don't think mana is a problem, at least has not been on any of the raids ive done, unless im aoeing...).

So its up to you. If you have hit gems and talents to spare, go for it. I think it isn't really worth it, but i think it goes on a case by case situation.

Re: Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

it also depends on how often you spam bolts

if you go heavy affliction it's hard to pick +hit for affliction AND destruction.

capping hit on your dots is pretty pointless if 50% of your damage is shadowbolts ( yes random number there )

Re: Anatu's short guide for raiding as Affliction@70 3.02

I think the Affliction hit talent (Suppression) is necessary - it lets you get rid of about 40 points of hit from your gems, freeing you up to gem with additional damage or crit. Plus your affliction spells cost 6% less mana.

I'm on the fence with Cataclysm... not sure that it's worth the 3 points as an affliction warlock who only casts Shadow Bolt as a filler spell. I used to cast 3-5 SBs per Corruption refresh, now I'll be lucky to cast 1-2 every 15 seconds.

(Last Friday, we ran Karazhan, full clear. Corruption was 30% of my damage. Shadow Bolts were only 25%. Once Haunt becomes an 8-sec recast instead of 10-sec recast, I expect that SB will drop to only being 10-15% of my total damage.)
