Warlocks Den Chat Channels

The topic of a Warlocks Den chat channel / IRC room has cropped up again recently. Once again I would like to remind everyone that there is no chat room or IRC channel associated with the Warlocks Den. I also ask that anyone who has taken it upon themselves to use the name 'Warlocks Den' without permission to create a chat room, change the name immediately.

As drastic as it sounds, anyone opening a chat room and linking it to the Warlocks Den, and continuing to try and promote it as an official chat room for this site, could see their access to the site revoked.

Well, your thread is clearly directed to me, as I'm the one who'd posted the thread about it. I'd like to react to your 'threat'.

The channel is up and running. As far as I know there's always an admin on it. I assume it's a dens' reader who'd like to discuss stuff with other den readers. So I don't think it's a big deal. If it bothers you that much go discuss it with him at #thewarlocksden on quakenet. Do not threaten readers with bans and such just for having noticed the chatroom, finding it a good idea and sharing this with other readers.

Anyway, you can't forbid the creation of such channels nor can you demand a name change.

This isn't the first time admins have thrown with threats for apparently lame reasons.

I'd try to be more objective next time. I also hope your reply to this won't be as hostile as your replies have been in the past, to others.

Actually you might be wrong. "The warlocks Den" is probably a trademark (as far as i know, as it has its own merchandising) so the owner of that trademark can impose her will on anything related to it, specially when its not an official product.

As for "threatening", would you expect a nice response if you posted about illegal server, on the official forums of WoW? I don't think so. And she didn't threaten anyone for noticing it. She did it to anyone who promotes it. Different thing. One thing is watching a robbery in place, the other is watching it and then spread how cool it is.

Guess we will see if she can and will forbid the use of the trademark "The Warlocks Den" on someone else forum.

Anyway im no admin or moderator of these forums, so what do i know/care.

At the very least what needs to be stated by both the other site and here at the Den is that there is no affiliation between the two. This protects both sites from each other should something bad happen. That isn't to say something bad will happen, but is taken as a precaution should that be the case. I would hate to see the Den's reputation hurt or it get closed down because somebody used its name in another location then got into trouble or caused a scene. This site would be damaged, or lose good visitors that might have otherwise visited the Den normally, without even knowing what happened.

Reading that last sentence of Akasha's again, she isn't threatening to ban anybody for linking it or bringing the channel to our attention, only those that are linking to this site and attempting to pass it off as an official channel of the Warlocks Den. Seeing as you, MD, have not done that I'm sure your not being threatened here.

It is a justifiable precaution on Akasha's part. We all should be doing what we can to uphold it as it helps to protect this community.

Really md, that post wasn't directed at you specifically. We had another post a couple of days ago on the same subject. The proliferation of warlocks den IRC channel posts had prompted this thread. Yours just happened to be the most recent.

If you search "IRC Channel" you'll see that your thread was far from the only one over the course of years, actually, though the last two have been removed for fear of perpetuating them.

In this age of intellectual property, trademarks and ownership it isn't a wise choice to name a channel warlocks den without conscent from the creator of the website.

Whist the channel name may not have been your idea it's a bit like going into a Starbucks and giving out leaflets to the patrons about a shop that is about to be opened called... Starbucks... but they sell, say slightly different coffee.


If you think that is a lame reason, I politely request that you rethink your definition of lame.

It might be with the greatest reverance to the original, a homage if you will but it's not nice for the originators.

Put your feelings to one side, and put yourself in Akasha's place. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flatery, but it can also create problems.

Imagine that something bad happened on the channel (not saying it will). Perhaps someone received death threats or cyber bullying. Now imagine the negative impact that could have on this site if it came to light that this took place on the warlocks den IRC channel. Akasha can only take responsibility for this website, as it's moderated with success to her specifications. Anything else risks giving the den a bad name.

Now, if only the person responsible for naming this channel would step forward. I take it they read the forums they've named the channel after?

Akasha created the name and thus has the right to refuse any other usage she cannot/will not control for good reason.

Quakenet is a private network and channels made on Quakenet do not succumb to ordinary trademark/copyright situations, if this is even the case...

Just have a look at the several 'Blizzard' 'WoW' etc... related channels.

I'd advise you to talk with the moderators. IRC is a wonderful means of communication. Maybe you can work out something.

Akasha's post might not have been intended as a threat, but it was forumlated in a way that sent that specific message: 'show interest in or promote something not genuine and receive a ban.'

MD it amazes me that you are honestly still going after Akasha and saying that you accept an apology from Vaell that is not an apology.

I'm truly sorry if i come off as a complete rear here but hey take it as you will I am a rear most of the time when people try to fight silly battles.

Akasha has every right to Ban anyone from participating on this site. It is her right as owner of The Den!! She does not want anyone to think that the IRC channel has anything to actualy do with the den and thats that. so from the way that i read it keep it up and get banned from here.

That is in no way shape or form being heavy handed nor is it being cruel. Places have RULES THIS IS ONE!!!!! stop breaking it or face the consequences.

We all know the Anarchy that this place has had for the last couple of weeks pre patch and directly folowing patch I for one would really like to get this place back in control and get some real discussiuons going we all need them right now not petty QQing or fighting amost ourselves over nothing.

We are all Locks We have been number 1 for years lets get ourselves back up there. We were not only number one because of game mechanics we are number 1 because of the DEN and its members KNOWLEDGE is better then any mechanic in the game!!!!!

With the utmost sincere respect md, I've had no contact with Akasha on this subject, save for reading the post from her above.

What is crucial though, is that I understand her feelings on the matter.

She has not approached me whatsoever in order to pacify the situation, and I'm acting independently but with the Den and Akasha's best interests at heart.

Respectfully, she shouldn't have to apologise for not wanting the name she has worked so hard for being used by others.


I'm aware of the benefits of IRC, but hopefully you understand and respect that as the site's creator she does not wish to have an IRC channel associated with the site. It's a simple request and if you were in her position I'm certain you would feel the same way.

When I ask you to put yourself in Akasha's position I'd hope you have enough empathy to really consider how many years, how much hard work, how much she's balanced (new born daughter, now one year old, building a house, family loss) in order to sustain this site and make it what it is.

She has given so much you wouldn't believe.

I can only speak from my objective point of view and am not speaking on her behalf. Consider it a primer for what will undoubtedly follow.

Its a simple matter of respect and while I doubt that you have any at all for the Den given your comments and attitude, if you do then surely its not too much to ask to change the name of the channel given that Akasha has issue with it?

This is clearly not an apology, its V's attempt to appeal to your better nature and resolve the situation without any further ill feeling regarding a subject that quite clearly polarises opinion and is sensitive to several people on either side of the issue. If you don't believe you're done anything wrong (and legally you haven't as far as I am aware) then please, think about it for a minute.

Any comments, any negative situations arising from the users of that IRC channel can and almost certainly will reflect badly on The Den. Does that sound like a desireable turn of events given how much Akasha has given to keep the Den running to a high standard?

We're not Zero Tolerance. We have a set of rules and merely ask people show enough respect to abide by them - Akasha made a request that people don't use the name without her permission and quite honestly I think that its entirely reasonable. I

f it transpires that you don't have any respect then you won't change the channel name but equally won't care if we remove your site access. I for one would hope the situation can be resolved without bans or unpleasantness.
